COMICS: George Pérez Claims He Could Not Wait To Leave SUPERMAN

When it came to writing Superman in "The New 52", George Pérez encountered many problems and couldn't wait to leave behind his writing duties on the book. Check out what he had to say about the experience after the jump.

When it came to writing "The New 52", George Pérez had plenty of problems because of the timeline that his book took place in. He had to write Superman five-years ahead of Grant Morrison's Action Comics which caused problems with the freedom he had on the book. During the recent "Superman Day" celebration, he spilled the beans.

The freedom he had on the book:
"I had no idea Grant Morrison was going to be working on another Superman title, I had no idea I was doing it five years ahead, which means, my story I couldn't do certain things without knowing what he did,"

The communication between Grant Morrison and himself:
"Grant wasn't telling everybody, so I was kind of stuck, who exists, DC couldn't give me answers. Oh my gosh, you're deciding all these things and you mean even you don't know what's going on in your books… so I became very frustrated."

Pérez has stated that he couldn't wait to "get off Superman" after his six-issue run came to an end earlier this year.

Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen are currently Superman's creative team but it is rumored that Scott Lobdell will serve as writer on the book following DC's Zero Month.

Well if this is true or not, it doesn't explain the bad writing on the book. Claims he didn't know a lot, but yet there were references in his comic to Action Comics, so to me it seems he knew enough.

However, it is the writers way, if it goes wrong: blame others, if it goes well: Accept the accolades.

@PatientZero I actually like the new 52, and Action Comics Superman is pretty good. His own book has been terrible, but that has been the writing and story.

The new suit looks really good but the new dc timeline's still a mess

@Pepsiguy2 Maybe, but before pen went to paper why not just go "Hey, I need more information to write this, or it will be terrible"

I personally think he is saving grace, just trying to pass the buck as to why his run was so terrible.

"screw the new 52"
"I hate Superman's new suit"
LOL
I agree partially with the first quote and completely with the second.
Nuff said.

@ManOfSteel1013 Sorry I will clarify. Yes he states he didn't get information from DC, but what I was trying to say was, why did he go ahead and still write it, and why write a story based on Grant's AC story if you knew nothing about it?

Secondly, there are a number of references to Action Comics so it seemed he knew some information, he probably wasn't told completely what was going on in AC as he didn't need to know, and they didn't want him to accidentally leak stuff through his stories.

However he should have been able to write half decent stories, not containing panel upon panel of needless monologuing and dialogue without any information regarding Grant Morrisons Action Comics, so I am not really buying this excuse.

To me it smells of, He did badly, he got fired from writing for doing badly, so rather than accept responsibility he is playing the blame game.

The suit is a bad joke! George's problems on the book falls on the uselessness of comic editors coupled with the marketing team having much too much imput. Sigh!

Hope DC pull there finger out and get Superman sorted, getting tired of seeing Batman dominating everything as per usual.

@SteveRogersSon I don't think he would write badly just to get fired, I just think he did badly, I am sure every writer has had a bad run. I just think he is trying to cover his own arse because of how bad it was.

I can understand his frustrations tbh though, beginning a new run with a small 5 year gap in Action Comics limits you quite a bit, especially if your doing a first encounter sort of thing which would get awkward if he meets them in Action.

@Just1Superguy Well lets us hope the new writing team are on the ball a bit more and produce some good stories. 1 thing I hope we never see again, despite me actually liking the new suit, is the way it materializes, rather than just being under his clothes, I really didn't like that.

i like what i've read of the new 52 but i've only read a few.

-animal man (excellent,the best title)
-aquaman (very good)
-batman (snyder, the only bat book i want to read)
-the flash (good,could be better)
-green lantern (good,could be better)
-red lantern (good,could be better)
-swamp thing (very good)
-wonder woman (very good)

i've got action comics 1-5 to read, they better be good.

@Marvel72 Action Comics has been great in my opinion. Although it is the moments where Grant decides to deviate from the main story that become an issue.

However I would suggest reading 1-4 then skip 5-6 and read 7 onwards, which directly continues from issue 4, then after reading issue 8 read 5-6, then go on to issue 9 and beyond.

Grant Morrisions not being a team player with his incoprehensible drivil that he calls writting? Shocking. Having to work after him must have been a huge chore, what with his random plot-twists, multi-layered yet horribly executed narration, complete disregard for the characters personalities and histories, complete lack of continuity and horrible dialogue. It must have been like trying to write a cohesive superman story after a writer whose sczichophrenic and just took six hits of acid. Good luck.

Perez's writing had potentinal, I could tell. I could see glimmers of a good story in his work and he had Sups actually fight things. You could tell, however, that he was not happy with the sitution and the lackluster execution of his writing showed it.

@SRS Thanks, personally in terms of the "Armour" I felt it really did not need explain all that much detail, which might sound odd, but what I mean is, writers have always wanted ways to explain why Superman's costume remains intact, now it has been his aura, and so on in the past, but i think they were doing away with that reason, so had to create a new one.

Now for me personally, all they needed to say, was the material was Kryptonian, and as such just tougher, not indestructible than any man-made material, thus a bullet wouldn't rip it, but in battle with a tough enemy it could get torn to shreds, when that happens, just use a throwaway line like he puts it in a machine in the fortress that repairs it.

I actually think they got too complex with the costume in to the how and why it doesn't rip apart when he stops a explosion.

For me if that wanted complexity I would have had the suit be a material that adjusts to the characteristics of the wearer, which it does kinda do when he puts it on in AC #8, but had it be like normal clothe, but because Superman is putting it on, while he is on Earth, thus he is enhanced, when the suit takes on his characteristics, it also takes on his denser molecular structure. So if he wore it on Krypton, it would be tear like any cloth as they are not super powered there.

Again, I would have just preferred a, it is tougher, but not indestruble suit, that was more regal than it is armour looking. However I did think it needed an update.

@KMaguire Agreed, maybe to some extent it was just a case that, during the reboot, maybe some characters needed a little more time before launch and as such suffered from not being quite where they would have liked.
