Sometimes we forget to appreciate what we have. Even the worst of CBMs are gold to somebody. Come on and celebrate the SuperHero Movie!

It was the best of Times...

It was the worst of Times... To be a Comic Book Fan.

When I first began to read comics they were as popular with guys as Video Games are today with everyone. Not every boy was a fan but they were reading something. Comics were for kids that was well understood. Then along came titles likes "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Watchman" and suddenly adults were buying graphic novels. I have always felt some people were just itching for an excuse to reconnect with those old kid feelings but for whatever reasons comics grew up a fair bit.

The the movies started. I had enjoyed the Superman films and loved Burton's Batman. But even at their height they did not inspire the creation of that many other films. It was like there was a market but it just was not big enough.

2000. X-Men. Everything changes. It was not exactly the Comics come to life but it was a good movie and it was a success. 2002 Spider-Man was the big hit. Oddly it was fairly close to the spirit of the original source material. The important thing is that the floodgates were now open and new SuperHero movies were greenlit all across Hollywood.

In the last 8 years we have had 36 SuperHero movies! When you add in things like 300 the total is even more impressive. But I can almost hear some of you saying 'But a bunch of those were crap!' It is true that some were failures what is also true is that few failed to make a profit. Gone are the days where the only measure of a film's success is box office revenues.

I am going to confess something: Considering how film school analysis based on character development, pace and other little details are tossed around here this might come as a shock.

Most of the movies I love were not successful.

Critics hated them, the general audience mostly passed, they are not good movies by any of the traditional measures. What they are is fun. You would have to look long and hard through the hundreds of movies I have on DVD to find even a single Oscar winner. Oh sure I have things that got awards for special effects and the other minor ones but Best Picture? Nope not a one. Oddly when I hear best picture buzz I cross the movie off my list.

I watch movies for fun. Movies of all sorts of genre's will do but the yardstick is still the same. I have seen many of the great movies but generally once. Let me illustrate with a very well respected movie: Saving Private Ryan. It is brilliant and I am glad I saw it. Frankly everyone should see it once they are over 18 because some of the real horror of war is there to see and feel. But for myself personally I have no desire to see it again. It is great but it is just not fun. I am a better person for seeing but more viewings offer little more to me.

By contrast I have put X-Men 3: The Last Stand into my DVD player over 40 times. This is far more than my viewings of X1 and X2 together I suspect. Like most people I play movies as background quite often so many of those times I was not just sitting and watching. The point is that X3 has the X-Men and an almost comic book level of action. Horribly flawed film. I know that really.

The X-Men were a group of 5 young mutants who were not very powerful. They worked together as a team and were able to defeat much more powerful foes like Magneto. At the end of X3 there are six mutants calling themselves X-Men who go off to fight Magneto and Phoenix. They win not brute force but by working together as a team.

By the time X3 was over I had finally seen all 5 of the original X-Men on screen. Cyclops and Phoenix were dead. Beast had had a chance to rumble. Angel got to fly and at least do one save. Best of all Iceman finally appeared in his full Ice form. Those are the moments that make these modern CBMs for me. Along with little touches like Shadowcat phasing Iceman into the ground much to his dismay. Did anybody but me think that after the battle he is going to start working on his trademark ice slides?

So often so much on this Site is negative. I do feel for those true X-Men fans out there. Their favorites were used to kick all these CBMs. But at the same time they have gotten the worst in terms of sticking to the source material. That is why I chose X3 above just to show that even in the 'worst' there are still some golden moments.

That is the true point of this article. I would like to celebrate the Comic Book Movie. For once I would like to lay the negatives aside and focus on the wonder of it all. There are moments and films are literally are dreams come true. Lets talk about those.

Iron Man I: The Mark II Armor

When the Mark II armor came alive and the camera slowly spun around it, I was grinning like an idiot. I knew at that moment that Iron Man was about to come to life before my eyes. Most importantly I knew it was going to be perfect. The moment pictured above where the armor turns to look right into the camera gave me chills. Iron Man just looked at me! I knew it was CGI but that so did not matter and still does not.

Even more than when Tony dons the iconic red and gold Armor the Mark II walk-around is just perfect.

So lets hear it people. Tell me about those moments. Don't worry about what anybody thinks. This is Personal Opinion and as such is NOT up for debate.

i am 17 years old, and so the cbm's i grew up with were batman, and only batman. and now look at today. now i am living in the best of comic book movie times the world has ever seen. i am glad that i am lucky enough to experience it in my youth, and it makes me wonder what we will see in the next twenty years as far as cbm's, simply mindblowing.

i bet we will start to see movies made like the cb's themselves, as in movies made without having to show us the origin every cycle. we will probably see on screen adaptations of the dark knight returns and that sort of thing. imagine the potential.

i have aspirations to be a movie director, and my greatest wish would be to direct some amazing comic book series, it does not matter what, i would just love the chance. i know that unless i become the next nolan, spielberg, or cameron i will never get to direct batman so i'm not getting my hopes up for that, but still.

thank you for putting this up, and giving us a chance. i only hope that people will appreciate this and use it share stories and experiences, rather than turning it into a war zone.

some of my favourite comic book movies:

the dark knight
batman begins
v for vendetta
iron man
iron man 2
superman returns
spiderman 2.1
the incredible hulk

If you can't have fun watching Saving Private Ryan, that's because you've only watched it once. There's too much great Spielberg for it to not be fun to watch once you can disconnect from it emotionally a bit.

For the most part I agree, and I think the future is bright for comic book movies. They are being made with greater care than ever before. However, I also think that, while it's okay to enjoy crap movies, it's dangerous to try to say that they're good, because that's how shit like Transformers get made, and we shouldn't have to accept crap from our summer blockbusters. There was a time when summer blockbusters were Jaws, Star Wars, Alien, Tron, Indiana Jones - truly great films.

There's no reason genre popcorn films can't also be intelligent, original, and well-crafted, on a level accessible to both fans and general audiences.

Before the examples of such success were few and far between (Superman came out in 78 and Batman in 89), but we've reached a stage now where we can expect at least one decent comic-based film a year, and that ain't bad. There may be a lot of bad ones, but isn't that true of all genres (and movies in general)?

My favorites (if we're doing that) in no particular order:

The Dark Knight
A History of Violence
X2
Superman
Batman
Iron Man
Mask of the Phantasm
Road to Perdition
300

I was disappointed by:
Sin City
Watchmen
Daredevil
Spider-Man 3
X-Men 3

I didn't bother to see:
Fantastic 4 movies
Ghost Rider
Wolverine

I think, based on what we know right now, that we can probably expect the next Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Green Lantern, Captain America, Thor, and Avengers movies to be pretty good, and I'm open minded about First Class.

when you see the phoenix at the end of x2, that was some dope shit. it was like, next movie, now, please. that's why x3 is so disappointing. the Joker card at the end of Batman Begins was a great moment like that too, but luckily Dark Knight lived up to it.

Well My favorite CBM´s are:
Iron Man 2
Iron Man
The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
Sin City
The Incredible Hulk
X-Men 2

My favorite moments of that movies would be hmm, in The Dark Knight the Joker scene on the bank, "whatever doesnt kill you, simple makes you stranger" on Batman Begins the scene where Ra´s let Bruce to die on his house while it is burning and everything he says to Bruce. Iron Man 2 my favorite moment is prolly the prision scene where Tony and Ivan are talking and when Ivan comes with his own Armor on the end of the movie. On the first Iron Man, that scene between Pepper and Tony "I just finally know, what I have to do". And on X2, Wolverine vs Deathstrike.
Yeah we all have our own moment on good or bad CBM, because thats why they are made, to please us :) When done right of course

Great Article. I too sometimes get depressed w all the negativity on this site (even though mostly fair). Even with all the problems that have come from CBM, the bottom line is this, we get to see our favorite heroes personified. we get to see them talk and move and fight. that alone is almost enough for me.

so in the spirit of the article, finding positives in 'bad' CBMs, i will discuss one of the most hated of all time perhaps..Superman Returns.

I know, i know, everyone is SICK of hearing about Superman, but i am a HUGE Superman fan, so i have to talk about him.

As bad as that movie was, and as much as i hated that i never saw Superman make a punch, the jet scene was utterly amazing. I saw my favorite hero fly with SuperSpeed, use SuperStrength and Heat Vision. I didn't see a drawing, i didn't read "Whoosh". I SAW him fly. And not just laying in a harness while a green screen shows a shitty image in the background. I saw Superman fly with SuperSpeed and lift an f-ing jet.

Say what you will about Superman Returns, i sure have, but that scene was awesome and everybody knows it.

@Superman8

Absolutely agree about the airplane scene. Flawed film, but with some truly great moments, and that was surely the greatest. It really was like seeing Superman for real, in at least that scene. Hopefully the next one can make you feel like that the whole time.

@Hamm3rtym3 - in Batman Forever, Bruce says to Dick when he's about to take off "the circus must be half way to Metropolis by now"... So I reckon Sup's did exist in the universe... Unfortunately odds are he would have met Batman and Robin at a gay club for an apple-tini...

I remember I was just a little kid in the 90's and I enjoyed Batman forever better than the Burton films. Of course when I got older I grew some senses to actually realize that the Burton films were a hundred times better than Batman Forever, but as a kid the neon light Batman forever really got to me as a kid into batman. I remember having the vhs and just popping it in regularly everyday to watch it because in the end it was fun to me as a child. I eventually got attached to the animated series and finally when I saw Batman begins I knew from the half way point where Batman caught Carmine Falcone that it was the best Comic book film at the Time. I remember buying the DVD to Batman Begins on the first day and watching it 3 Times in a row, and then I went into comics. I then started a countdown for the Dark knight on my Myspace (This was before Facebook became popular) And I would change my name everday to B3NNY!! 200 days to the Dark knight. The Dark Knight eventually came out and it exceeded all my expectations and I saw it 3 times on the first day which included a midnight show. During that first showing I had the biggest grin at the part where the Joker was hanging upside down and him and batman were talking about madness and Harvey, I felt as if that scene with all its lighting and how Batman saved Joker was pulled straight from the comics, "Because madness as you know is like gravity, all it takes is a little push".

Nothing really to do with the comic itself, and again in a shitty movie, but in the first Fantastic 4 when Johnnny is snowboarding and ignites, then falls in a pool of water and asks his date "Care to join me?" And she actually does! Priceless.

I have found a little piece of every super hero movie I love I think it's just the fact that it brings all of those thoughts I had as a kid to life. Like what If people really could do that. I always envied the artist and writers that came up with theses characters, I even came up with a few of my own but for them to bring them to life is a real treat. I just can't get enough of the comic book movies. Nuf said.

and another would be after the joker is dead on the pavement and you hear the laughing. i remember being three years old and thinking that he was still alive, totally disregarding the silk bag.

batman has affected me so much. i know that may sound pathetic to many, but to me batman is...i cannot find words to describe what batman is to me, but tim burton governed my whole childhood just with batman.

i never even saw any of his other movies until recently.

Somebody up top said animated movies count so here we go.

Although this movie i think was really good and a personal fav, Superman/Batman Public Enemies have some of the best Superman and Batman fight scenes i've seen in any medium.

I like these animated movies because its the best of both worlds. you get art style of the comics and can keep the same kind of non-reality, but you get action and voices and cool plots.

Another good scene from a very shitty movie was from the Ang Lee HULK.

Towards the end when Hulk is in the desert running from the military, he swings a tank around and throws it and then just has this pure, spaz, intense moment where he clinches his fists, closes his eyes, and just goes AGGGHH!

Great scene of hulk just being hulk and losing control.
Superman8
Superman8 - 9/6/2010, 9:23 PM
I could do this all day..

in X-Men 1, the bar scene in the beginning with Wolverine where he has the guy up against the wall and slowly releases his middle claw.

Pure intensity, great visual.

when Michael Keaton first held that guy off the roof and said "I'm Batman" I was just a little kid, but for the first time I thought superhero's could be real.

It must be pretty cool being a little kid growing up now with all the superhero's coming to life every year.

iron2jason - your right, that, or even DarKnight would have been fantastic movies to counter blooder Shumacher's abysmal atrocities. But if they had chosen to make those movies we would never have seen Christopher Nolan take the helm. I think that once Christopher Nolan is finished, they should try and get Tim Burton back to finish his story. Maybe one of those movies, or even Dark Knight Returns with Michael Keaton. They both wanted to keep working, but Warner Brothers said what they were doing was too dark, idiots.

This is great, i feel like for once i am apart of something with people like me, and we can discuss these amazing moments, and have a good time reminiscing.

Hi all. First time here. Big comic fan for some 35 yrs. Many great moments in movies:
-Nicholsons first appearance as Joker. Wow
-Uncle Ben dies in Spiderman. I read it so many times, it was tough to see played out. I had tears.
-Jean sacrifices herself for the team in X-men 2. It was X-men #100 so well done.
-Bullseye:"Your good. But me... I'm magic." Still don't know why that didnt work better on film.
But the best:
-Tony Stark wearing the mark I. It was Tales of Suspense #39. Not the slick red and gold. Not some well made suit of armor. It was the "put together by scraps" gray armor. Someone finally captured that classic moment of comic and put it up on screen. I still get chills.
