UPDATE #2 Director Says: Green Lantern Won't Be A 'Cheesefest'; Cites Inpiration for the Film's Tone; Info on the Dark Nature of Two Main Characters

The director is hard at work to keep a certain amount of realism to the film. He goes on to say that the tone of Green Lantern could mimic a certain Marvel superhero's film. . .

Martin Campbell has been making the rounds on interviews for his new film Edge of Darkness starring Mel Gibson. He has been giving us bits of information on next year's Green Lantern as well. In a recent interview with Sci Fi Wire, the filmmaker relayed his test for a superhero:

"I think the thing to do is keep a sense of reality about it. Any time we talk about it, we sit in meetings, we have a cheese meter. We talk about de-cheesing any scene. So it's quite funny. We've all sort of got a sort of cheese meter where that becomes our sort of yardstick in terms of keeping it, giving it some sense of reality."

"So often in these superhero movies, nobody seems to get hurt. I remember seeing Wolverine, and he picks people up and hurls them 100 yards into a brick wall. These people, apparently unhurt, sort of get up and continue to fight just as strongly as they did before. Well, there's something absurd about that, in my opinion."

Campbell was set to film a remake of The Birds originally done by Alfred Hitchcock but opted for Green Lantern instead. He also hinted that a trilogy could be in the works: "Well, it's like Sam Raimi on Spider-Man, isn't it?"

One of the trickiest parts of GL will be showing off the ability of his power ring: "Well, of course it's willpower drives the rings and forms the constructs via the ring." "I think he's the only superhero that does that."

It also appears that Peter Saarsgaard is not completely on board yet. "I think he's contracted," Campbell said. "I'm not sure if negotiations have been complete, but he's absolutely who we want."

UPDATE #1: In a recent interview with Collider.com, Campbell discusses the tone of the film -

“It will be much more in the tone of Iron Man. It’s got to be. Certainly not Batman Begins, which is a pretty dark movie. No, he’s the Hal Jordan character who’s the sort of shoot from the hip, irresponsible kind of cocky test pilot if you will. In fact, the character seems to be the least likely to be chosen as Green Lantern. Well, of course that’s the fun of it. So no, it’ll be much more like Iron Man. So it’ll have one foot in reality if you see what I mean.”

UPDATE #2: More info from Campbell about both Sinestro and Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire's turn to the 'dark side':

"I think it will stick closely to the origin story, but we all know Sinestro, for an example, is a character who goes over to the dark side, and of course, Carol, played by Blake Lively, in later versions becomes a bad guy as well, I think people will be able to see forward to the characters that in the comic went on to [become bad guys] ... but people will be ahead of us on all that I think."

Man! They had better quit with this trilogy crap! A cavalcade of comics beckons execution to film in the form of serials.

This guy is awesome. He is able to say that Wolverine was ridiculous and made me hungry at the same time. What a guy.

Hold on there is a Remake of The Birds planned! I cant say I'm not suprised saying as it's more likely to find a film without a re-somethingorother planned but thats just not needed!!

I get keeping the cheese factor down, but I'm wondering how much "realism" you can maintain in this sort of film.I think seriousness is a better word.Once you've added aliens and power rings, reality flies out the window.

@Ranger14 he said the enemies who got back up and fought. Not just wolverine and he is right. It is absurd

Quiet frankly, this movie will probably have plenty of cheese but you just have to learn to accept it (even if i do hate it) Its going to be damn hard to set this in "reality"

@kenny38606 agreed for sure. Especially since GL has the ability to manipulate a mysterious green force into matter that can take any form and do anything. haha

kenny38606,
Listen, I think when they refer to realism, it has to do with certain immutable physical laws like gravity with which we all identify. Its best to limit the amount of disbelief we already have to suspend in regards to a ring that creates hard-light constucts from one's imagination and will as much as possible.

It was a good chuckle reading your comment with your little superboy icon right next to it. :)

Wellll, I have watched it once or twice on my own too:)

Seriously, you guys should watch Origins again and keep an open mind this time..try to forget about the differences to the comics and its a pretty enjoyable movie..not great, but decent.

@ Kenny: Agree but it sounds like he's just talking about use of force.
I hate it when they have two men fight in movies and no one gets cut or broken knuckles, split lips, bubble eyes, broken noses or knocked out teeth like in a real fight.

@ROR, I'd watch it again but teh second time I watched it I was on a plane which did nothing to sway away from me thinking it really wasn't great! I think it even did it more damage! ;)

I agree with the director. There needs to be a greater sense of realism with the damage to other characters and their surrounding environments. I don't know about the brick wall scene, but how many damn people did Wolverine stab in the X-Men movies without any freakin blood?

I don't know about you guys but I hope de-cheesing doesn't mean taking away giant hammers and huge hands! loll =D.. Can't wait to see that shit on the big screen!!

Having said that: I really wonder how he'll utilise his power ring.

I think what Campbell means is that he wants it to be more mature, to take itself seriously. I agree with that.

Yaya! Martin Campbell is the man. Trilogy is what we want but if he is referring GL to the likes of Spiderman, hopefully he can maintain the likes of Spider man 1 and 2 or Iron Man. Let's hope he doesn't go the direction of Spiderman 3 cus Sam Raimi has lost his magic touch.

Thanks for the 'cheesy' pic Poni. Its very...green. Not sure if your comment is sarcasm or what. The EOD is just a suggestion to help maintain this site and nothing more. I appreciate every thing you guys do for this site.

Ror, I enjoyed Origins. It wasn't the greatest but I know its going to be one of those movies that I get hooked into every time I come across it on TV.

RedDevil
RedDevil - 1/18/2010, 8:12 PM

Trust me, when the trilogy begins, John Stewart will be there as well as Kyle Rayner. Guy Gardner is already in this one because he is in the Emerald Dawn, which Martin Campbell is vying for.

i actually liked X-men Origins: Wolverine and had only a few QUIPS about it.
1) Baraka-Pool. 'nuff said.
2) People kept dying. what's the point in introducing them if you're gonna kill them off after 5 minutes?
3) Here's my biggest qualm. The fact that no matter how many times Wolverine or Sabretooth or Wade gutted, slashed, sliced, diced, maimed, or otherwise hurt someone with a sharp object, there was no blood.
talk about no realism!
where's the laws of physics there?
even kids today know that when you get cut, you bleed!
i know why the film makers did it.
i do not have to like it!

otherwise it was an awesome movie and i cannot wiat to see the sequel!
as long as people actually bleed (i'm not looking for geysers, just a sense of realism.), and the storyline and it's characters aren't TOO butchered.
this is FOX, let's face it....
somehow the film is going to be butchered.

I don't get that cheese part. Star Wars has plenty of cheese and it's right there at the top. Is he talking Sci-Fi or reality because I have never seen a real Super Hero. Maybe a Fireman or a Cop but they take a bullet and fall down. So is he sayin he is going to jack this film up. Too much real stuff killed the Superman movie n the Hulk. If so leave it a comic.
