Speculation Of Max von Sydow's Identity In STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

After the potential 4chan The Force Awakens leak on November 30th, new possible spoilers have surfaced. In light of this information, MarkyMark will take minute to talk with you about three possible identities for Max von Sydow's character in the upcoming film.

I cannot stress this enough, there will be possible major spoilers discussed in this editorial. If you want to go into J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a clean slate, you should pull out. However, if you too are wondering who the heck Max von Sydow is playing in this upcoming film, stay on target with this editorial and be brought up to speed on what I am about to discuss by reading the supposed leaks here

In the 4chan report, it was said that Max von Sydow would be portraying a "...broken man from the prequel area that has become mostly cyborg. He is not force sensitive and for some reason collects artifacts that we've seen at critical points during the previous films, particularly ones relating to the Jedi and the Sith." The report goes on to further describe his current state. "Sydow is a sort of mentor to Kira [Daisy Ridley], and apparently his true identity is an Act III revelation that will surprise a lot of people. The contention is that he is an existing character from the prequel films, and the revelation of his identity will shock viewers...Sydow's character is "not overtly" a villain, but has some sort of Sith connection...Sydow's "hideout" is a downed AT-AT. Relics of the war are everywhere in the film; there is a real feeling that the entire galaxy is sick of the deadlock."

Okay, he's a broken man from the Prequels, he's not force sensitive, he has an obsession with the Jedi and Sith, has some sort of relation with the Sith, his true identity will shock Star Wars fans, and he's not overtly a villain. Who are we left with...

Raymus Antilles

While this may seem like a strange conclusion, why is it entirely impossible? Sure, maybe he died, but did he actually die?

Last we saw of Captain Antilles, he was being interrogated by the ruthless Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader. Not giving him the answer he wanted, Vader broke his neck with one hand and threw him into the wall. Pretty morbid death, right? Or maybe, just a terrible handicap to live with.

It would appear, based on the concept art, that Sydow's character has some sort of robot neck, or neck brace, to keep his head up. To add even more injury, the further sacking of the Rebel Blockade Runner and currently unverified canon circumstances probably left the Captain seriously injured and near death. Think about it, the Dark Lord of the Sith nearly kills you, and you're left more machine than man, wouldn't you be obsessed with this man (Vader's helmet), his religion (Jedi obsession), his family (Luke's lightsaber from A New Hope, previously wieled by his maimer)?

Boba Fett

Yes, Boba Fett did not die in Return of the Jedi. You can read confirmation of that for yourself here.

Since Boba's escape from the Pit of Carkoon is now a given, I'm sure that being in the belly of something that will slowly digest you for a thousand years can certainly damage your body, inflict massive amounts of pain, and result in some serious psychological damage. Assuming the desert planet in The Force Awakens is Tatooine (which I personally doubt), perhaps Boba escaped with massive injuries/was rescued, had his body repaired, and then stayed on the planet where he conquered death, probably out of pride or maybe even anger.

His obsession with the Jedi and Sith could be explained in that a Jedi took his father's life, a Sith screwed him over when he plotted revenge on his father's killer, and a Jedi destroyed his body and left him to suffer a horrible death. This also makes him a broken man from the Prequels and not a complete or obvious villain.

Zett Jukassa

Who is this little kid, you may ask? Well, to make it real simple and canon, he basically died in Revenge of the Sith when Bail Organa was investigating the destruction of the Jedi Temple.

(his death can be seen at 4:00)

While it may certainly be a long shot, considering Zett is force sensitive (contradicting the 4chan leak), his resemblance to the talented Sydow is uncanny.

Just for the sake of discussion, let's pretend "SpoilerMan" was wrong about Max not being force sensitive and that maybe Max's character just keeps his force sensitivity a secret. At the same time, he would also obsess over his dead religion by collecting artifacts and obsess over the Sith because of his machine body, a result of the blaster injuries suffered during Order 66.

In conclusion, the rumors suggest Max von Sydow's character to be a broken man from the Prequels, not force sensitive, has an obsession with the Jedi and Sith, has some sort of relation with the Sith, has an identity that will shock Star Wars fans, and is not overtly a villain. Do you agree with any of my thoughts? Where do you disagree? Do you think "SpoilerMan"'s leaks sounds exciting (assuming they are true)? As always, leave your thoughts in the comments section below and let us know what you think.

I don't know if I buy this. Besides Boba Fett, none of these people would be all that shocking...mostly because most casual Star Wars fans don't even know or remember who those people are. The only one here who would make an impact is Boba Fett, and that just smacks of awful, eye-rolling fan service.

Any chance it's actually Luke ?
Maybe Hamill is only doing some incredible voice acting and Sydows providing the physical performance ?
Pretty sure I heard a rumor that Luke is more machine than man now..

Darth Maul. Or Palpatines degenerative clone. No.........my vote goes to one of the Ewoks that got shot by an AT-ST.

Count Dooku, Mace Windu, or Qui Gon Jin. Those three would be the only ones any one would care about or be shocked over. Unless it;s Nute Gunray or Commander Cody or some z-list jedi, it has to be one of them.

I am more interested in Serkis's character and the Revan like face mask that one sith has. I'm just saying, Serkis could be could be somehow tied to the Old Repulblic, even though the EU is mostly gone. Disney is having Bioware develop another star wars game, that's probably KOTOR3. THen we have that Disney producer saying that Star Wars will revolutionize long form story telling, with this tying into the books, games, shows and movies. I'm not saying anything for sure, but there is something going on here.

@SauronsBANE
Good point, but if Disney wanted to really please fans for the badass Boba people seem to love him for, they wouldn't much appreciate him being crippled. But simply for the sake of shock value, I can appreciate it.

@StabbyJoee
I would've agreed with you a month ago; but in light of the 4chan leaks, and possibly my love for the character, I'm thinking Luke won't be half machine.

@WishYouWereBeer
Thank you. And wow, I totally forgot that announcement, I think Kathleen Kennedy said that?
It would make some sense that it's Ezra given the fact Disney just introduced him and is making sure every Star Wars fan (casual or obsessive) knows who he is.

*sigh*.....yeah, this is one of the dumber things I've read recently. (Sorry, can't think of a nice way to say it.) First, I won't believe any of the rumors until confirmed. Second, besides having his neck broken by Vader, the ship Antilles was onwas destroyed. Not just crashed, but the order were to basically blow it out of the sky and claim it was part of an asteroid/meteor collision. A normal, non-Force sensitive human would not survive, even if part of the ship did make it to the surface. If they use Fett, they will make him look like Fett, armor and all. Not some old man who is a cyborg. Your other suggestions are just reaches.

My mistake about the Tantive IV. And thanks for your input, but it was made assuming the 4chan rumors are fact.

The only character that fits the profile & would have an awe-struck impact from the casual SW fan is Boba Fett. All of the options are just EU muscle flexing, but if those character details are accurate, & th desert is Tattoine, Boba Fett perfect makes sense. He would be in his late 70s-early 80s, had plenty of interaction with Vader (some shown in the movies & much more in the EU) & the cybernetic implants could easily be explained in the big "reveal" in Act III to be lifesaving measures after being stuck in a Sarlacc digesting & presumed dead. Name any other OT or prequel character you want, but not one of them would be recognizable by name to anyone but the hardcore fans of the EU. JJ & Disney will definitely exploit the popularity of Fett, especially if he gets that rumored standalone film.

The characters that intrigue me more are played by Serkis & Gwendoline Christie. I can only hope the Darth Revan resemblance is more than a nod & Christie would make for a great Lumiya (although the character back story would need to be changed a little bit to account for her not being closer to Luke's age).

All speculation, but Disney are masters at marketing so Fett is just too juicy a character not to flesh out some more & cash in on

According the report in your own article, it says the identity would be shocking.

The revelation that this character shrowded in mystery is the kid who wasn't called by name on screen, and only had a minute on screen and died IN said scene wouldn't be shocking, it would just be kind of stupid.

Pretty similar with Antiles. He wasn't very memorable, he died because they wanted to show just how evil Vader was right off the bat.

The reason a revelation of the identity of a character would be shocking would be because we already KNOW the character.

I think the Boba Fett theory makes some feasible sense. The others, not so much.

Personally, I think Sydow will play an entirely new character. I don't think they will want to have any connection to the prequel trilogy, as Abrams seems to abhor them with a burning hatred that rivals a Sith's hatred.

Perhaps he's a clone of the Emperor?

Those concept art leaks have not been confirmed to be Max Von Sydow's character whatsoever. In fact, most believed that character to be Adam Driver. But after the trailer, I'd guess that cyborg is probably Andy Serkis, while Adam Driver is a younger apprentice. More recent rumors have suggested that Max Von Sydow is actually just a native Tatooine drunk, who has looked out for Daisy Ridley's character throughout her childhood.

Perhaps Max Von Sydow plays Sifo Dyas. The Jedi who possibly ordered Clones on behalf of his friend and Sith Lord Count Dooku, before being supposedly betrayed and Killed. Maybe he barely survived, and was forced into exile due to his previous actions.

An earlier description of the movie script suggested that the new Sith figure would be an apprentice ( Adam Driver ), who would quickly overthrow his master ( Andy Serkis ). Spoiler boy seems to be holding back more than his name would suggest.

He could be Lobot, I think that could be interesting. Plus, he could have located the hand and lightsaber because he was in cloud city when Luke lost them.

Count Dooku is definitely dead, as a severed head is hard to return from. This logic would rule out Darth Maul too.

Boba Fett is most plausible, as while assumed dead, he may very well have survived that ordeal on Tatoonine. Possibly attaining Injuries that end his bounty hunter days.

Wouldn't rule out Sifo Dyas yet either.

I think Max Von Sydow, will be revealed to be Anakin Skywalker in some way. Luke saved him at the end of Rotj, we only really saw the suit being burned, not the man.

Look up Max Von Sydow Bio he is 6'4. Vader was the same height.

Maybe he is protecting his Granddaughter and has lost his force powers. I don't know, It just kinda fits.

Here's a real long shot (and I agree that Boba Fett) but what about Bail Organa? I know there's less than an optimal match between Jimmy Smits and Max VS, but he's a character that would truly shock. And it makes a lot of sense for him to both be hiding out, concerned about Jedi artifacts (he was closely tied to the jedi and knows the truth about what happened), and has every reason to be mentoring/watching out for Daisy Ridley, HIS GRANDDAUGHTER. Of course, prevailing wisdom is that he died on Alderaan. But he knew what that big moon-like space station could do when it suddenly appeared over the planet. Who is to say he didn't flee? And that he's a wreck now because of survivor's guilt?

I immediately thought Sifo Dyas, which could come in two manners:

1. Sifo Dyas himself. Kicked off the Jedi Council and screwed over by Tyranus/Sidious would equate to being force sensitive without allegience

2. Grievous. Definitly "broken" in the prequels, and infused with Dyas' blood at the hand of Tyranus. Additionally, his saber obsession in the prequels aligns with an obsession of war antiques. I think, though, that Grievous playing a prominent role in ROTS is not as in line with the description of MVS's character. I see Dyas collecting artifacts in remorse for what he put in motion by going rogue to Kamino.

I also think max von sydows character will end up being anakin. It makes sense from a major reveal perspective. What other character would really be a big reveal.....boba fett, lobot, dengar? I don't think so. I think that it also plays somehow into why tatooine is so important relative to the force in the star wars universe since that is where anakin was conceived by midichlorians via palpatine/plageius. When palpatine died is when vader lost all his force powers (since he was created by palpatine) and the midichlorians got "released" back into the universe and later "awakened". Luke kept anakin alive after RTOJ and had him protect solo's daughter. Why else would some old man/stranger be with solos daughter living on tatooine? This will somehow also play into why anakin's force ghost is a young anakin. Luke realizes the importance of collecting jedi/sith artifacts before the enemy does and anakin is collecting them to keep from sith. The burning vader was only the suit...i think this was mentioned in original ROTJ novel. I think everything will come back to why tatooine is some sort of nexus of the living force.....anakin conceived there, obi wan lived there, episode vii comes back there.....why?

Also, remember when qui gon said something to the effect to Shmi that "our finding anakin wasn't a coincidnece"? Of all places for a ship to breakdown...tatooine? And yoda told obi wan to go to tatooine to learn how to comminicate with qui gon in the etheral world.
