EDITORIAL: Why a DEADPOOL Film Could Have a PG-13 Rating and Work

People always say "IF DEADPOOL IS PG-13 THAN IT WON'T BE TRUE TO THE CHARACTER AND IT'D BE CRAP!!!" I however, believe that a Deadpool movie could actually work incredibly well with a PG-13 rating, handled the right way. Click the words above to see how!

It's likely that a user on CBM.com is in the process, or already if in the process, of scrolling down to the white box near the bottom of the page. This user has skipped over this article and gone to that box so he can type a message and put it out for the world to see. This user is either:
  1. Trolling
  2. Saying I'm wrong.
  3. Posting a funny comment about something said in the decription and or title of this article that I didn't catch before posting to this site. This joke will either make me laugh or feel stupid. I don't care.
  4. Or finally saying "I can't read it now, but it looks good so thumbs up!" (the least likely option)

To that person I say, "@#$% you!!!" Now you know what was just said right? You can understand what I meant by "@#$% you!!!" right? Of course you could, unless your a dumb@#$. You got that one too didn't you? Exactly! If you don't live under a rock drenched in holy water, with a cross on top, and a statue of Jesus choking a demon out in front; you can understand the curse/cuss/swear words I just used, even though I censored them with those symbol thingys above the numbers.

If you can do that you probably can do it audibly as well. Let's say your watching TV. Reality TV. A girl with a big butt and big boobs is yelling at another about something the producers told them to. One says "(bleep) you" or " What the (bleep) were you thinking?" It's easy to tell what they're saying right?

Now what was the point of that section of text above this section of text and below another section of text? A perfect segway in to my first point of course!!!

1. BLEEEEEEEEP
"PG-13 rated films may contain stronger language (e.g. bitch, shit, tits) and one uncensored use of the word [frick], provided that it is not used for sexual intercourse. If said expletive is spoken more than once and/or used sexually, it is routine today for a film to receive an R rating." wikipedia

Deadpool uses expletives. We all know it. We all love it. We all want it. Could PG-13 provide that? Yeah it could! PG-13 movies can use the majority of cuss words, but if the F-word is used more than twice, usually, it becomes R. In this Deadpool film we'd use something movies don't usually use. The standard censor "BLEEP". How? Comedically. For example:

Deadpool Movie - Intro

Now let me be clear the "bleeping" would not be used NEARLY as much throughout the film, but would show up every now and then. Frequent enough to be a running gag throughout the film, but frequent enough so that it becomes annoying. At some point in the movie, Deadpool and the head voices would become tired of the bleeping. Finally, there'd be one moment when he said one of the bleeped words and it wouldn't be censored. He'd say something like "I said it. I wasn't bleeped. I SAID (BLEEP)" Then he'd be pissed again.

The catch would be that he's the only one that would hear the bleeps. He's the only one that can break the 4th wall. He's the only one that can peak in to our universe. There'd be various parts of the movie where he might be looking at the camera talking to us, but then we'd see it from someone elses point of view and it'd seem like Deadpool was just talking to no one. Deadpool would live in a world where everyone thinks its real, when really they're just in a studios Cinematic Universe. Deadpool's the only one who knows this, but he's seen as crazy for it.

2. Camera Tricks and Cuts That Are Quick
You see all that blood. That wouldn't be in the film. Though it's fun to see, it's not necessarry and you all are fine with it, without even knowing it. Remember that test footage that was leaked last week? Can you point the blood out to me....no....oh when he has the severed head? You can barely see anything! Just a little bit of red underneath. That's it! Everyone said "MAKE THIS MOVIE!!!" and if it was made like the test footage, it could very well be R and STILL be a success. Just watch the video below to see what I'm talking about.

I don't see why that footage would be R at all. Everyone LOVED it. The support behind it right there shows that it can be done.

You notice that right before the decapitation of the...guy...they cut away. It's implied it happens, we know it happens, the aftermat hshows that it happens, but we never see blood, internal organs, or anything else that would raise the rating of the film. I think at a certain point it would get old, and not all fight scenes are choreographed in a way where that could work, but we see stabbing and slicing in movies all the time without seeing blood.

Um....I thought I had more examples, but I don't so bye, bye!!!!

I agree with all of your points. I am a fan of Deadpool, but I don't want to watch a graphically violent movie. A PG-13 Deadpool would work just fine. And thanks to the end of DOFP, the movie could even take place in the same timeline as the other X-Men movies!

I would usually never approve of a non-rated-R Deadpool movie, but thanks to this article...

A PG-13 Deadpool movie very well could work, but I'd rather it be R if we had the choice, but seeing as how FOX is very reluctant to do that, I won't complain at all. I just want a Deadpool movie. I love the idea of the words being bleeped out for comedic purposes.

Wouldn't it be great if in the new X-Men fashion, that the whole time the [frick]s were uncensored until the very end, deadpool utters a sole uncensored [frick] and kills the badguy.

The irony of my comment is ironic.

So basically do what was talked about in that AMC Mail Bag Episode on Youtube.

I like the idea.
When it comes to deadpool, you can do this because of the kind of character he is, if it was someone else, it wouldn't work.

AND you can have your cake and eat it too.
for the theater release, Simply bleep out the curse words in the movie, and have Deadpool acknowledge that. (and make it Motion capture like that teaser that was leaked)
and NO blood.

On the DVD release, you can have it R-rated with no bleeps, and added blood.
(Dont say its not possible or feasible, cause that's Bull****)

This way the Studio can release a PG-13 Movie for wider audiences in theaters
and Rated R option in the DVD so that fans can buy it.

@GoldSlayer1

Actually I've had this for months and first put the idea on my article which can be found here, but that got me thinking more about it and inspired me to write this article.

@TheReddestHood
Im not debating who made it first, im just pointing out it was talked about in AMC Mail Bag. (maybe the guy asking the question saw your original post?

And I think its a good idea.
But bleeping out words, and not adding blood, makes it easy for them to make 2 versions of the movie.

PG-13 and Rated R. With the Rated R being available on DVD.

If Fox wants to get some serious fan appraisal while having a more successful movie due to the PG-13 rating, then this is the best route IMO.

Cause editing in bleeps and digital blood (most of it is digital now a days) is pretty easy.

and the scene where he acknowledges the bleepings (and maybe lack of blood) could be PG-13 Exclusive scenes.

I agree with every point in this article. I do like Deadpool and it's nice to have him in the spot light again. Ever since Origins ruined my love for the character i've always wondered if there could be a chance for a "true" Deadpool film the test footage proves it and so do your brilliant ideas for a PG 13 Deadpool film, thumbs up, man.

We deserve an R rated Deadpool movie but at this point, I would settle for PG-13, I just want a Deadpool movie....

Yeah, I meant to talk about an R rated or unrated DVD version, but I forgot to put it in there. I think you got it covered though.

While he did start as a rip off of Deathstroke, the two characters have gone a long way since and are (aside from their names) barely comparable.

Great article @TheReddestHood, ya know, up until know I would have throw out the argument of a PG-13 DP film instantly. But after reading this I'd be okay (still a bit disappointed that it wasn't an R though) with it.
I think your camera angles point would really help the film. The most R-rated thing about the test footage was probably the beheading and you didn't even see it.
Alphadog
Alphadog - 8/6/2014, 1:46 AM
@TheReddestHood At the end of the text right above the test footage I think you meant to write Pg 13 but wrote R. I have an adittion to how this could work that I also have two aditions to this article. You could show his reaction to gore and stuff instead of actually showing the gore. It adds a lot to the comedy because of what he would say. You could also have him comment on the PG-13 rating saying that he wants to see the nasty things. He could even try to move the camera but be unable to.
Alphadog
Alphadog - 8/6/2014, 1:50 AM
@TheReddestHood There should be a scene where he says that right before the scene they are in there used to be a sex scene between him and one of the characters but the producers deleted it.

@JillyMcBeam yeah I'm ok with Lobo I enjoy when he gets his ass kicked, I enjoy that he is a comedy character in some ways, not sure how he is a wolverine rip off but ok.

@DCGuy,

The creators (of Lobo) stated awhile back that Wolverine was the inspiration of Lobo. His mannerisms and looks are very similar. It's not a bad thing per say I guess.

Don't forget Cyborg, the ripoff of Deathlok...
kong
kong - 8/8/2014, 9:26 AM
@MercwithMouth

The two are similar, but I don't see how Cyborg's a rip off. Especially since we didn't get Michael Collins till 1990.
MercwithMouth
MercwithMouth - 8/8/2014, 11:04 AM
@TheReddestHood

You would be correct, if Michael Collins had been the first Deathlok. Luthor Manning, the first Deathlok (known as Deathlok the Demolisher) debuted in 1974. Cyborg debuted in 1980.

kong - 8/8/2014, 11:54 AM
@MercwithMouth

Oh I know who the first Deathlok was, but black guy gets in an accident and has body parts replaced with robot parts happened with Cyborg before Michael Collins. I think it's a stretch to say Cyborg is a deathlok rip off, but maybe Marvel ripped off Cyborg when they revamped the character for the 3rd time.
