The Russo Brothers Say They Would Love To Direct A Standalone 'Black Widow' Film

In a recent interview in China, the Russo Brothers have just joined the band of people who would love to see a Black Widow film happen! When asked about whether or not they'd want to be involved in such a film, Joe Russo responded, "Hell yeah! We love that character." Anthony then added, "And we love Scarlett." Just as Clark Gregg noted, Anthony Russo explains that there are a lot of possibilities with the Black Widow character. "We find that the character is one of if not the richest character in the Marvel universe. A very complex character, haunted by demons and her understanding of the world is fascinating. I think there is a lot that can be done with that character."

Based on what we've seen in the Captain America: Civil War set photos, and the trailer, Black Widow looks to have a much bigger role than she did in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Anyhow, if Marvel were to announce a Black Widow film, what would you want it to be? A Budapest prequel with Hawkeye? How about a film that explores Natasha's dark past? Whatever ideas you have, share them in the comment section below!

@GamerKT

I agree, I said long ago they should have made a BW movie or at least a team up movie with Hawkeye......

To me it might be too little to late.

I would only watch it if she gets naked in it.

Do a Secret Avengers movie but not like the comics though. Just strictly Black Ops missions with no super-powered people. BW/Hawkeye/Maria Hill/Mockingbird/Sharon Carter/Coulson

I don't know. I might watch a solo Black Widow film if they give her a new costume...

That's nice. Too bad nobody would pay to see it.

I'd rather a new character be given the spotlight. Maybe Spider-Woman. But I agree, Black Widow is an interesting character and is in my top 5 favourite MCU heroes.

The perfect time for a Black Widow solo film would have been right after Winter Soldier, when she needed to go make a new cover [i.e., by being undercover]. Instead we got Age of Ultron's "I wanna run away with you, Bruce!" Biggest [frick] up in MCU continuity since Iron Man 2. If only Whedon had actually written his film as a sequel to Winter Soldier, and not to Avengers. I think the ship has sailed on solo films for Black Widow and Hawkeye.

If they took a more serious approach to a Widow Movie like say "Bond", "Bourne" or even a "Mission Impossible" style I'd watch it.

There is nothing odd about having a scat fetish. It's perfectly normal.

She was always a supporting character. And she's a great one.

A team up with Winter Soldier would be fun.

A little late with this movie, because it would have made more sense to do it in the past, but now people want other films instead. I personally have no desire to see a BW movie or see it take up one of the spots for the year. Instead how about a Ms. Marvel movie after Captain Marvel comes out? That new character has quickly risen to be one of the more interesting and fun Marvel character.

For those interested, you should check out Charlie Jane Anders' interview with Richard K. Morgan about Black Widow. It's an interesting read about the process and thought behind making Black Widow more than an sidekick, love interest or just T&A.

He explains the "Red Room" and her inability to have kids EXPONENTIALLY better than AoU!! Hell, he spells it out exactly how it should've been conveyed in AoU and how Whedon/AoU misunderstood the character.

"Why was it important to you to have Black Widow unable to have children? How was this part of telling a feminist story about her, in your mind? Black Widow #5 starts with that horrific scene where Lyudmila tells Natasha that “pregnancy is a disease.” Did you worry that this was reducing Natasha to just her fertility or lack thereof? And what was your solution?"

"That narrative thread actually emerged not from any specific interest in children on Natasha’s part — my sense of the character is that she’s probably not keen on the idea — but because one of her fellow Widows was trying to have kids and had run up against the Red Room biotech that prevented it. So when Natasha finds this out, it’s almost a casual blow. But what’s telling, I think, is her reaction; there are no tears, no mawkishness, no collapse into becoming womanly distress — she’s just very (and dangerously) angry. And it’s important to realise why she’s angry — it’s not because she necessarily wants kids. She’s pissed off because she’s had the choice taken away.

It was always important to me that the Widow should be a genuine woman, not just a kick-ass guy-type character with T&A and legs-up-to-here glued on. And there’s no honest real-world vision of women that doesn’t take having babies into account; it’s what females have been designed for by millions of years of evolution, most women will feel the urge at some point in their lives, and remember I was positing Natasha as getting older — a woman in her late thirties minimum, so that urge might be getting urgent.

But that’s biology. Feminism begins after biology, and in this case it begins with what women do (and more importantly are enabled to do) about that biological urge. See, most women I’ve ever met either already have or at some point want kids, but there are still significant numbers who don’t, or at least don’t right now. But those variations are beside the point — the real point is that among all those women, having or wanting kids or not, I never met a single one who didn’t want the choice. Ultimately, I think, that’s what feminism is about — building a world in which women’s choices are not circumvented by someone (male) else’s agenda."
