Young Justice Among Cartoon Network's New Series

Cartoon Network has announced its news series as part of the network's upfront presentation, and Young Justice is among them.

What follows is a list of the shows:

Young Justice:
In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over—to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? That’s exactly what the members of Young Justice—Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis—will found out, whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero. This all-new series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based upon characters from DC Comics. Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman Doomsday, The Batman) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, W.I.T.C.H.) are the producers.

"The Looney Toons Show" will star Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, along with Yosemite Sam, Tweety, Sylvester -- the whole gang. Weirdly, the network is having each episode as a half-hour story along with "cartoons within a cartoon." The concept takes Bugs and Daffy out of the woods (awww) and puts them into the suburbs (arrrh!) with "colorful neighbors." You would think in the age of YouTube, re-embracing the show's original 7-minute short-form format would be the smart play here instead of trying for a weekly version of "Desperate Houseduck." Here's some preview art:

MAD:
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and using the iconic MAD magazine, published by DC Comics, as inspiration, MAD is an animated sketch-comedy series utilizing a chaotic mix of animation styles and twisted humor to pull back the curtain and expose the truth behind movies, TV shows, games, pop culture and, of course, curtains! Classic MAD magazine characters and features such as Alfred E. Neuman and Spy vs. Spy pop up, and no subject matter or individual will be safe from MAD’s barrage of parodies and sketches. In the end, viewers won’t get even, they’ll just get MAD! Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Kevin Shinick (Robot Chicken) and Mark Marek (KaBlam! The Andy Milonakis Show) are the producers.

Robotomy:
The animated Robotomy tells the story of Thrasher and Blastus, two outsider teenage droids who are only slightly less horrific than the ultra-powerful robots that populate their planet, Killglobe. Now they face their greatest challenge yet: high school. Armed with a desire to fit in (and little else), Thrasher and Blastus navigate their lives with varying degrees of success. Created by Michael Buckley (The Sisters Grimm) and Joe Deasy and co-executive produced by Christy Karacas (Superjail), Robotomy, a quarter-hour series, will be produced in New York.

Secret Mountain Fort Awesome:
When a portal to the world opened and unleashes underground monsters, so goes the premise for Secret Mountain Fort Awesome. The human world had everything these creatures could ever want. The only problem is, humans hate monsters, and they treat them like second class citizens. How unfair! This is their world too. Created by Chowder writer and artist Pete Browngardt, Secret Mountain Fort Awesome follows this clan in their dim-witted efforts to break free of human oppression. The animated series is being produced at Cartoon Network Studios.

Run It Back Sunday:
Cartoon Network takes The NBA on TNT’s game of the week and remixes it for basketball fans of all ages. Run It Back Sunday is a full NBA game in one power hour, complete with fun facts, amazing highlights and explosive special effects. From jams, passes and steals to fun facts and unique analysis, Run It Back Sunday presents an all new way to catch the game of the week.

Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game:
Cartoon Network’s first foray into the broadcast awards arena, Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game will premiere in early 2011. This high-energy, multi-platform experience will let viewers decide who’s got game, by honoring their favorite sports stars and sports moments of the year. From the red carpet, to the never-before-seen stunts and surprises on stage, this unconventional celebration will be led by a celebrity host and feature icons from television, film, music and sports, as kids experience an evening of humor and fun at the most raucous and biggest sports awards show ever presented on television. This first-of-its-kind, sports award event for kids, is created and produced by IMG Media. Sports Illustrated will be serving as the official promotional partner and will also introduce the SportsKid of the Year Award.

naw...it's just gonna be another rape of a perfectly good franchise...just like they did with Teen Titans (GO!)...they need to start doing the cartoons like the MTV Spider-Man series and the new Iron Man Animated...(for kids, but not the slapsticky, anime crap that seems to be in vogue these days...) I LOVE the CGI/digital animation...seems more...serious.

i would rather prefer an Outsiders animated series. Young Justice is too close to Teen Titans. and it would be pretty awesome to see Nightwing as a leader instead. hehe

WakeUp - 4/21/2010, 12:32 PM
It seems like one of these days a network will realize that a slightly more mature comic cartoon would do well in a earlier slot something along the lines of "Hulk VS or Planet Hulk" DVDs could work as a series if given a chance...other than "Wolverine and the X-men" everything as been pretty soft and unwatchable in the last 5 years

DC’s Teen Titans animated series was super popular with kids and cancelled while still very popular, due to the poor performance of merchandising. Taking the young heroes of Young Justice (Robin, Superboy, Wonder Girl, Arrowette, and Impulse-Kid Flash) and merchandising them with the Justice League brand would be a smart move. Sorry I am not a freaking kid anymore! Besides I was just having some fun?

"I think this sounds kinda cool. A show taking advantage of seldom used characters? I approve."

Try never used characters..Besides Robin, those characters have never appeared in animation before.I'm looking forward to this, Avengers:Earth's Mightiest Heroes and season 2 of Armored Adventures.

Even though I don't watch Super Hero Squad and the Brave and the Bold is hit or miss, it's good that we'll have 5 comic book animated series on the air this year. Not sure when Black Panther will debut in the US.Not to mention Ultimate Spider-Man next year.

The Young Justice looks very interesting. I'm very excited about it because it looks to have good animation. DC Comics post a promo pic of Robin most likely to be Tim Drake, since Connor Kent is Superboy, very exciting news IMO.

you can never beat Batman and Superman the animated series why can't they make cartoons like that any more.

First off, 'Young Justice' was a great comic. It didn't feel like a Teen Titans rip-off or a "Baby Justice League". It was less about being a supergroup and more about them getting together because they like having other people around who understood what they were going through being in that middle ground. I honestly would have been OK with them just using the original 3 (Impulse, Robin, and Conner), but I understand that you have to make it accessible to girls, as well. If you can't use Wonder Girl (due to Wonder Woman licensing) Miss Martian is a great substitute. My question about Artemis is whether she's a simple Arrowette replacement or if she's based on the Wonder Woman substitute and has Amazonian power, in which case she would really be an Arrowette and Wonder Girl hybrid (pointless). I don't really care for her costume, either. The Black Aqualad is just stupid. For one, they should have used Lagoon Boy, if anything; and for another it's just insultingly token. YJ member Empress was a black female and she kicked all kinds of ass! Plus, she had ties to the police, which would have been a great plot device. I understand why they can't use Secret, because her story is way too tragic, but I hope she makes an appearance. Lastly, I think taking away Red Tornado as a mentor/JLA liaison is a huge mistake. It's more believable if the teens lose direction at times and have someone to keep them on track. Overall, it might be a good series if they keep closer to the LOS than TT animated series. Either way, I'm eager to see what happens.

So we have yet another attempt to assrape the Looney Tunes characters. Why not just show THE ORIGINAL LOONEY TUNES? Cartoon Network owns all of these classics, and they remain as funny today as they were when they were new. A major part of the problem with kids now is that we have generations growing up without great comedy like the classic Warners cartoons, and without the Three Stooges. No wonder so many young people are so humorless! These classics need to be on more than just YouTube (between their periodic cullings of the cartoons)! They used to be a staple of afterschool and Saturday morning programming.

As for this Young Justice thing, what the blue hell is up with what I guess is Aqualad? Hate it! I'd also sure rather have Impulse instead of Kid Flash. Impulse was freaking hilarious because he was always annoying the hell out of Robin and Superboy, yet he was useful enough that they were willing to put up with him.

There is a chance that the new Aqualad is based on Cal Dunham from the Aquaman comics. He was originally a Black Manta thug (where he was given gills and added strength), but he soon quit when he learned Manta's methods. He was incarcerated, but when he was released from prison he became an ally of Aquaman. Geoff Johns may have big plans for Cal with the return of Aquaman and thought that Young Justice would be good exposure.

Im a HUGE fan of YJ. I started collecting the back issues a coupla years back. Maybe this'll make them come out with collected trades. Anyway as for this show...

Now Im no whiner but I have issue with the not using Secret or Arrowette. I say this especially cuz Artemis is basically just Arrowette with a green color palette. Wonder Girl I understand, but its time for them to remove that embargo, its made us miss out on a lot. Robin looks too small, glad they usin Tim Drake though. Id prefer Impulse for a YJ series, or at least Bart Allen, but the costume seems interesting. Glad Miss Martian is gettin a showcase. Dont really mind a black Aqualad (they should do it in tha comics, we need better representation at DC), and I agree with Geek, be cool if he was based on Cal Dunham. I actually LOVE Superboy's design. I never really minded the T shirt, but the tight jeans + dress shoes kinda defeated that. The cargo pants and army boots are cool.

All in all, Im really looking forward to this, despite it all.
