Interview with Superman: Requiem Fan Film Director Gene Fallaize

Coming in 2011 is an ambitious fan film called Superman: Requiem, and the Superman Homepage -- pretty much the final word in terms of sites devoted solely to the Man of Steel -- has an interview with its director, Gene Fallaize.

What follows is an excerpt from that interview:

Q: What can Superman fans expect from "Superman Requiem"? What will the quality be like?

A: By having such a great cast and crew (from well-known cast members, to visual FX, to costume design, right down the list), I am totally confident that what we will have is something not of 'fan-film' quality, but of true professional-level quality, which is a direct result from having a fully professional cast and crew who are very used to working on multi-million dollar pictures all giving their time and energy into making this film at that same high quality that they're used to working on. The huge benefit for them - and everyone else working on the project - is that they get to work on a 'Superman' movie, which is great for everyone, and the support and dedication from everyone involved has been simply amazing.

The attention to detail we have been striving for on this picture, going as far as the costumes, to ensure they are of the exact same cape fitting and design of those used in the Christopher Reeve movies, and that others (including the Kryptonian costumes) are made of the same material as originally used also. We also have composers Warlock & Bradford composing an entirely new score based on many of the original John Williams themes, but also including entirely new compositions.

Q: What is the story about?

A: As for the story itself, I can't give away too much at this stage, but it follows on from 'Superman: The Movie', but a few years ahead, so as to incorporate certain elements from all four Christopher Reeve movies, as well as 'Superman Returns'), and Superman is back doing what he does best, when someone uses Kryptonite to render Superman almost powerless. He must then find a way to use the powers he has left to not only continue his normal work, but also to save those he loves when they are threatened. Will Superman be able to continue saving lives with limited powers? Will Clark Kent finally find true love? And will Superman be able to get his powers back? All these will be answered in "Superman: Requiem".

I can confirm, however, that Superman, and lots of his powers, will be showcased in this picture. The losing of powers storyline is not to get out of showing his powers in action on screen, quite the contrary, it's so that we can delve deeper into the thoughts and feelings of our favourite superhero when things aren't going his way, and how he deals with them, to show a slightly more emotional side to the Man of Steel.

Deadpool72, for a guy who claims to hate the show so much you keep talking about it, even when the article has nothing to do with it. Dude, admit it, you have a man crush om Tom Welling.

Deadpool, I have to give you credit: it's genuinely amazing how you're able to tie almost every story into your disdain for Smallville. It's a gift, sir.

@ celenco

just saying what i think.

this has a something in common with smallville.

no budget spent on it.

i respect the effort thats put into fan made movies, where smallville has no effort put into it.

& finally having a crush & wanting to crush tom welling is two different things.

@ ed gross

thanks. :)

While we work on pre-production, here's a sneaky-peek of part of the costume:

Really tired of the Donner/Reeve era constantly overshadowing Superman.

Bring on Man of Steel with Manganiello hopefully!

I like the Donner/Reeve movie but I think its time to move past that one. I think they have the opportunity here to update Superman's look, they should go into that direction.

Well i for one ain't anticipating this. Why? Well for one thing, they kept the Donner continuity which sucks ass. Second, they kept the Reeve costume which worked in the 80ies but not today. Third, the plot sounds a HELL OF A LOT like the Singer script i read online a while back for his "Man of Steel" sequel which had him going up against a new hero in town called Metallo, who everytime he popped by to save the day right from under Superman's cape, he made Supes sick and lose most of his powers. And i don't know what the hell he's talking about when he mentions the cast and crew being "used to" working on multi-million dollar pictures when all the rumored cast is virtually unknown and have done nothing but indies or straight to DVDs. I might take a gander at it but i'm not psyched about it at all. Snyder will give us the Superman we've been waiting for, which has [frick] all to do with Donner's. I honestly can't understand why a "fan film" is made from Donner's films when the majority of fans would agree to follow the books or the animated series and not Donner. But anyhoo, to each's own.

I'm not naming any names but fuc k, get off Smallvilles dic k. The article does not mention one word about Smallville or TW but yet some people managed to speak about it for no reason. In any world that's a sign that you're riding hard on their dic k.

people bitching at deadpool for hating on smallville are just as common as deadpools repeated smallville posts. its more annoying for me to read everyones post saying how lame deadpool is than it is to actually read deadpools post. he says his peace, and hes done with it. everybody else keeps going on and on throughout the page about something deadpool said one time in the comments. get over it.

@ Superman8 - I rarely say anything about Deadman, Leee or anyone for that matter. We know they hate the show yada yada. THE ONLY TIME I COMMENT is when we're talking about females and bitches. My reason for commenting back in the last few articles is because when I expect to read about TWD (The Walking Dead) and people's opinions on the article all I read is the same old shit from the same old characters. Money is there more behind the hate? A man crush? What?
because it's getting boring. I do not have beef with any of you but it just repetitive lol. The first words out of their mouth are how Smallville and TW blow. I don't mind people bitching on material if the article is about the material but when we drive off course it's idiotic. It seems as if they've been cheated by their ex-broad and they can't seem to let the pus sy go lol. This is why I hope TW is choosing to play Supes in the MOS just tick people off some more and watch them be proven wrong.

All I’m saying let’s stay with the material on hand and not revert back to the same old comments when it has nothing to do with it. Capiche!

Kudos on this movie and attempt at a "different" story line. I look forward to seeing it. This does remind me of something I'd like to say to Zack Snyder and the writers of the Superman reboot, if he's (they are) listening (and he probably isn't, but I'm saying it anyway).......and it's going to be a lot.....

I swear to GOD----....if you limit Superman in any way other than seeing through led, reading minds, etc. OR - you water his powers down....use magic, kryptonite, or the"loss of the amount of sun" B.S. as a crutch (because, ever since he came back to life --- he has NO LONGER NEEDED IT) ---- You have no idea how quickly I will find you and make you wish that you hadn't.

If you even go as far as have a one second thought about him having a kid....I'll reach into your imagination with both hands and strangle that kid to death, so that it NEVER-COMES-BACK into your minds.

Superman DESERVES to "show off" in the 57,024 ways that he can. Have a scene where he flies SO FAST he can barely be seen by the naked eye -- while using heat vision, super strength, freeze breath, etc, etc, etc --- while taking down MULTIPLE and POWERFUL foes in one scene -- without breaking a sweat. You are Zack f*cking Snyder. You are a visual genius. You have a budget that most countries would use to feed their people for years. You can find a way to "slow it down" so that we can see it all take place and make it look real and AWESOME.

Give him guys that step up - and get tossed down like EVERYONE should that steps up to him. Show why he is KING....why he IS the standard that all other heroes (DC and Marvel IMO) live under.

You can bring LOADS of kryptonite when it's time to make things "interesting". When you want the conflict...be CREATIVE about it. Don't do what is "easy". Create a unique and perplexing conflict to Superman. He can handle more than any of them....so you kind of have to. I don't care if someone is strong enough to punch him through a mountain, but be sure to have Sup's immediately retaliate quick and strong with a counter. Make the scale grand. Don't live in the "box". You would be so surprised at just how many of us want to see Superman "run up the score". We want to sit and go, "HOLY SH*T" and bite our knuckles and punch our friends in the theatre, asking, "Did you SEE THAT?!" Or - "That was SO BADASS!!!" Give me more than three scenes to come back to the theatre and see, over and over and over again, like I did with the Matrix. I WANT THAT!! WE DESERVE THAT!! Superman of them all.....deserves to stand alone as the "King of the comic Hill". If you do that. If you create jaw dropping scenes of him "doing his thing" -- then you can easily keep his amazing morals, integrity and "boy scoutness" in place. Let his powers make him the badass that he is. You won't need to change him on the inside. Even those who want their "emo/antihero/dark-horse" will sit in awe. They won't mind...just as long as you let Superman "bring it"....and with unrelenting force and endurance. He's Superman, damn it.

I think that the ONLY scene that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up during Superman Returns (which I, like most have mixed feelings about, because I appreciated them "paying homage", but....we'll you know.....come on) -- was the scene where he's just in the edge of the atmosphere of earth....listening to the world. That and the scale of what he was doing, was beautiful. That, though...was a one minute scene.

OMG...look, guys. I'm sorry, but I've had a ton of coffee. I know that was a rant.....and it wasn't even put together well....but I'm just SO tired of Superman being dumbed and diluted.

I usually try and stay quiet on here, but I'm passionate about Superman getting what he rightly deserves and us as fans before our time is up on this planet.

You all can comment...at least let me know if anyone agrees with me. I know I didn't cover everything that makes a movie a movie, but I just wanted to throw some things that I think we'd all like to see in this reboot and (hopefully) the more Superman films to follow.

Sounds like it'll go straight to the sh*tter, I mean video. Following the Donner films. Hmm, sounds like a big budget sh*tter thats already been released and flopped, Superman Returns anybody. These guys are supposed to be "THE" superman fans, yet they seem to be oblivious to what the current generation of superman fans actually want. Lets see, theres over 50 years of stories, yet they choose to follow an irrelevent movie from the 80's. My guess is that "superman homepage" is filled with baby boomers, and retirees, whose heads are stuck in the golden age. We her at CBM could probably pull off a better movie.. well maybe not.

Great...another donner sequel. Supes loses his powers and is focused on finding true love? It'll be another boring film like- Superman Returns. His thoughts and feelings??? Damn can we ever be given a HEROIC film for Supes? FIVE Superman films in and we haven't gotten a decent villain aside from Zod. Now this thing...? God I hope it's good but so far I am worried. Thank god it's only a fan-film otherwise if it truly tanked it could've spelled the end for Big Blue on the big screen.

@Superguy1591- I remember that scene from JLU, lol. Greatest moment ever. That one scene alone was more epic than any of the 5 Superman films combined...sad but true -_-

Thank God Snyder said he wants to make Supes a "man of action" now, that's great news! And yeah- Manganiello would be a GREAT Superman!

@Superguy1591- Yeah I've never seen a comic book version of Supes that looked anything like Routh. You're right about Manganiello looking like Jim Lee's Supes. Right off the bat I could see Alex Ross in Jon Hamm.

Routh could be a good Bizarro though, I give him THAT. ;)

And yeah- hopefully Snyder can give us some of that slow-mo so we can see Supes cut loose like that!

As for the music video...LMAO pretty funny shit =) I had NO IDEA Routh was in that video!

furthermore @Superguy1591- We're both young dudes (b.86) I figure that as long as WB can give us a Superman film within the next...oh say...60 years where Supes actually PUNCHES and FIGHTS I think we'll be all good. lol. So I'm willing to give them from now and the next 60 years when I die to make a truly epic Superman film where Supes can finally cut loose. If they don't do it within the 60 year timeframe then they suck. LOL

I mean damn- look at our "cousin-fanbase" the GL people. Damn their first film and it is looking so [frick]ING epic, it's unbelievable. We need a film as epic or more epic than that. It looks like it may just top all the Chris Reeve films + Returns COMBINED. I am almost tempted to smack the WB execs upside the head for being so damn ignorant about Superman.
LP4

And to- Gene Fallaize- Shame on you for making this fan-film a continuation of the Donner series and connecting it to Superman Returns. Don't you understand DONNER has no place in our modern-world. He's completely outdated and his films need to be laid to rest.

I can't wait till Snyder begins production on MOS so he can show you what SUPERMAN movies are all about!

I'm skipping this piece of shit. Again it's sounding boring- Supes loses his powers- AGAIN (we had that in Superman II) and of course Superman wants to explore his thoughts and feelings...GREAT.

[frick]en BORING.
