Kevin Feige says, "'Batman & Robin' is the MOST Important Comic Book Film Ever Made."

Whatchoo talkin' bout Willis?
According to a top figure in Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, the 1997 "Batman & Robin" is being placed at the top of the list of most important comic book films ever made. How can this be you may ask yourself? Well, due to the recent adaptions released in theaters such as "Iron Man," "Spider-Man" and "X-Men," their releases would've have been possible if it were not for the critical failure of "Batman & Robin."

"That may be the most important comic-book movie ever made," said Feige. "It was so bad that it demanded a new way of doing things. It created the opportunity to do 'X-Men' and 'Spider-Man,' adaptations that respected the source material and adaptations that were not campy."

MTV also reports that the producer/director/screenwriter Akiva Goldsman admitted there were bad decisions made with "Batman & Robin," but didn't apologize for the wrongs.

"What got lost in 'Batman & Robin' is the emotions aren't real," he said. "The worst thing to do with a serious comic book is to make it a cartoon. I'm still answering for that movie with some people."

Whispers68: I haven't seen "Batman & Robin" since the theatrical release and I will never venture there again but from time-to-time, I want to go back and see how my opinion of all aspects with the film would be. I've seen many comic book adapted films since then so with my greater knowledge for this niche in movies, I want to see how my thoughts would view the sequel...but reality hits and I realize nearly two hours of my life comes off as being too precious to lose. Is there anyone on the site who enjoyed the movie?

MultiPurposePoni - 10/19/2009, 6:34 PM
Multi@ whatever gets your jollys off lmao
mounted88 - 10/19/2009, 6:36 PM
@multipurpose

Well, that definitely counts. That actually reminds me of what It felt to sit through the entire movie. Funny thing is, as far as details go, I don't recall a thing about the movie except bits and pieces
Whispers68 - 10/19/2009, 6:44 PM
i used to like it when i was seven.
now it's an embarassment to even consider watching.
and i am sure that the actors are still answering for this movie.
Wadey09 - 10/19/2009, 7:36 PM
I LIKED THE MOVIE WHEN I WAS 5 SINCE I WAS LIKE OH SHIT IS A BATMAN MOVIE AND THE ONLY MOVIE BACK THEN WERE BATMAN,SUPERMAN,SPAWN,HULK THE TV SHOW MOVIE,SUPERGIRL, JLA TV MOVIE
flames809 - 10/19/2009, 7:56 PM
I just view it as a modernized Adam West Batman or something and it makes everything okay. Then again, I'm easy to please.
MovieTheaterLad - 10/19/2009, 8:58 PM
MovieTheaterLad-- Same here! It's hilarious.
Betty - 10/19/2009, 9:33 PM

Kes - 10/19/2009, 9:41 PM
and wow......those colors are quite splendid...i guess i missed the "Batman gets a paintjob" comic they obviously based this on!!!
Kes - 10/19/2009, 9:44 PM
Ah, I remember seeing this for the first time the summer of 1997, I was about to start college that fall so some of my high school buddies and I went opening night, a few beers in the parking lot and let’s just say a certain illegal substance was applied to a sugar cube going in...First and ONLY time I ever did that... now THAT movie was AWSOME!!!

Next weekend I went to see it again; this time I went with my girlfriend... (Sigh) hot goth chick; first and ONLY time I ever dated one of those either. Advice for younger posters; yes the goth chicks can be really hot, and kinky, but nine times out of ten there is something seriously off there to make someone that morose.

Saw it the second time sober and without hallucinogens. Damn. That was NOT the movie I saw the first time. It is a movie SO BAD you had to be on serious drugs to enjoy it. I can't fully remember what the movie was I saw the first time, but whatever distorted version was being reprocessed by my altered perception was far better than the turd that it was in reality.

In my head it was all Kelly Jones and Norm Breyfogle artwork set to a Frank Miller Script with a Smashing Pumpkins score.

In reality it was Siegfried and Roy on ice surrounded by neon lighting and bat nipples and Uma Thurman playing a six foot drag queen, written by a chimp and still scored by Smashing Pumpkins only much less coolly.

nerosday - 10/19/2009, 9:44 PM
You know I heard that if you watched this movie, you would die. Arnold Schwarzaniggger will crawl through ypur screen and "Kick some ice!"

And speaking of X-Men... I just wanted to let you know that my X-Men 4 story is in Fan Fic!

until then....

THEHAWK abides.
THEHAWK - 10/19/2009, 9:45 PM
@Nerosday. Goth chicks huh? Well when in doubt you can always go after the ones with daddy issues.
THEHAWK - 10/19/2009, 9:47 PM
this is exactly what i was thinking when i read the headline. this is the perfect example of what NOT to do, lol. and hey, if directors learned from it, then i don't feel so bad about losing an hour and a half of my life to that film.
CorndogBurglar - 10/19/2009, 9:47 PM
Corndog- Perfect is an understatement to say the least!
ASSASSIN666 - 10/19/2009, 9:51 PM
@ HAWK
lol... High school I chased Goth chicks, College was Preppy girls with Daddy issues... about the same level of psychosis just expressed in vastly different ways. :)
nerosday - 10/19/2009, 9:52 PM
nerosday--lol!
Betty - 10/19/2009, 9:52 PM
Best part of that movie is listening to Arnold saying "GALLLLGGGHH!!! I'M GOING TO FUREEZE YOUUUU!"
davidzuck - 10/19/2009, 9:57 PM
Let us all reflect on what NOT to do in a comic movie

"Script"

"Camp"

"Director"

nerosday - 10/19/2009, 10:01 PM
@HAWK: They all have daddy issues, that's why they love to be spanked. Bless 'em

@nerosday: Nice attraction matrix breakdown. . Here's mine - High school: I chased any girl that might give it up, College: I chased EVERY girl that gave it up, Military: The girls chase YOU to give it up.

Then I got married. Now I post comments on CBM.com
MultiPurposePoni - 10/19/2009, 10:08 PM
I think it was a shame George Clooney did'nt hang himself after that movie. That would have been the honorable thing for George to do. Still not to late Mr. Clooney before you ruin some other great movie, like you did to Oceans 11. The "Rat Pack" you are not.
Number21 - 10/19/2009, 10:10 PM
@ MPP LMFAO!!!

@ 21, hanging? He should have committed seppuku

Aggghh Nero you made me remember how horrible that movie was! Damn how could someone shamelessly put so many ice puns in one movie? Its comedic sacrilige! Worse still, they took Batmans most morose enemy and turned him into neon blue clown with the worst written dialoge on any film ever! That's Batman sacrilige! ;)

Luffy how come you add lol in every comment when there is no need for it?
Shadowelfz - 10/19/2009, 10:59 PM
Why does he add a Dragonballs videoto every comment when he knows that everyone hates 'em?

Maybe because he's a tool?
MultiPurposePoni - 10/19/2009, 11:02 PM

@multi

My girlfriend is asleep as we speak and I'm trying ot to laugh out loud but you're making me fearful for marriage. Hahaha!

I have a lot of friends whom are married...heck, my older brother has been married the last seven years or so.

It can't be that bad right? Sex doesn't end and everything is as bunny rabbit in the sex department as when you were dating...right? LoL
Whispers68 - 10/19/2009, 11:32 PM
Where are batgirls nipples?
verbicide - 10/19/2009, 11:59 PM
yea...where are batgirl's nipples? Robin has nipples but batgirl does not? That is some sexit shit...lol
Jojo Risin - 10/20/2009, 1:39 AM
Whisper, it’s not that you stop having sex when you're married... it’s just that the long gaps and irregular opportunities make you forget when you got it last.

lol... sex was more memorable when you were single because it’s not always the SAME person. You miss the chase. But the chase is what you gave up, that's the marriage trade off... for love, security, someone that knows you better than you know yourself and thus can push your buttons at will... you get no more dating or anonymous sex with new and interesting people.

Sometimes you miss it. Then you think, "Hey, I love my wife." "I don't want to lose half my shit." "I rather see my kids more than every other weekend." and in the case of my little pixie of a wife... tiny as she is... She WOULD cut my nuts off. She's little. But she's mean. lol.

nerosday - 10/20/2009, 1:53 AM
Damn TEABAG @ Do i havta spray every darn room lol!!

LUFFY @ Heh heh

LEEE777 - 10/20/2009, 4:11 AM
@Whispers: Dude, I've been married for close to 6 years now and let me tell you first hand, it's a great part of life.

That being said. . . I used to be a degenerate whore. I used to chase more tail than a dog. It's a hard thing to switch off once it becomes part of your personality.

Like nerosday said, that's the marriage trade off.

@nerosday: At least you still have your nuts. My wife uses one of mine for a keychain and and the other one as a paper weight. . .

she DOES let me borrow them from time to time, bless her ;)
MultiPurposePoni - 10/20/2009, 5:30 AM

The Sequel to 'Batman and Robin'?
EditNinja - 10/20/2009, 7:15 AM
"It created the opportunity to do 'X-Men' and 'Spider-Man,' adaptations that respected the source material and adaptations that were not campy."

Oh...you mean like "Batman('89)" and "Superman (1978)?"
JohnnyKrypton - 10/20/2009, 8:45 AM
nerosday-- Those B&R clips up there made me remember that as terrible as his depiction of Mr Freeze was it's some of Arnie's most understandable delivery. I think these are some of the longest lines he's ever spoken on film too.

The thing I hated most about the Clooney Batman was his stupid head waggle. He does this thing with his head when he walks and talks. If you put pointy ears on top of his head it just makes it worse.
Betty - 10/20/2009, 9:38 AM
Lmao, is it just me or is Arnold the best part of that movie? Nice vid nerosday.
SlaughterHouse - 10/20/2009, 9:51 AM
I can appreciate what Feige is trying to say.

But it's not like the existence of that movie heralded the end of bad CBMs. Several have been made since then, some of which were big time films.

I wish I could be one of these people that says everything about every CBM is JUST GREAT. No matter how bad the movie is, or how shoddy of an adaptation it is they still come back with the blanket "it's all good" thing and then call the rest of us hypercritical.

But no. I can't. I can't even pretend to lower my standards for what is essentially my two favorite art forms brought together. A combo that SHOULD BE superb every time. It could be.
DarthMulder - 10/20/2009, 9:57 AM
Well he is very right but as some of you guys have said, it didnt stop crap like Catwoman, Daredevil and 2003 Hulk from being made. The day every comic book movie is amazing, Kevin will be completely right but until then filmmakers will never learn from mistakes like Batman & Robin

And hey Batman & Robin and Fantastic Four will always be movies made especially for kids
dancingmonkey08 - 10/20/2009, 11:48 AM
You're right Mulder, as films possess the visual aspects of art and the audio aspects of music, its probably the most complete form of entertainment. And, while making movies are by no means an easy undertaking, really bad ones like Batman and Robin should not have made it past the editing process. EVERYONE should have seen the garbage that it would be when pieced together, first and foremost the director, yet no one stopped it. I think, as in most cases, they were probably blinded by money and their big fat paychecks made them leave their artistic integrity at the studio door.
Shadowelfz - 10/20/2009, 11:57 AM
Marvel pay money a Kevin for destroy BATMAN but him is indestructible, and pay to Brian Singer for destroy SUPERMAN, in this moment SUPERMAN IS DEAD.
OSCURO - 10/20/2009, 1:07 PM
Shadowelfz I agree about th paychecks but for some movies I guess once you reach the point of no return the best you can do is try to break even .g
Punisher Warzone
The Spirit
Catwoman
The Spirit
breakUbatman - 10/20/2009, 1:13 PM
That movie sucked if anything it was Spider-Man 1 that did that shithead
MrAnonymous - 10/20/2009, 3:30 PM
That movie had so much promise to it, it was casted so well [ except for Alica Silverstone, and George Clooney ].
legder20 - 10/20/2009, 4:18 PM
@Ledger

Replace those names with "Arnold" and "Schwarzenegger" and you've got it.
MovieTheaterLad - 10/20/2009, 4:37 PM
This was possibly the worst movie ever made. Who the crap picked George Fickin' Clooney as Batman? did opie from family guy control the production and cast of this movie?
wyatt1234 - 10/20/2009, 6:44 PM
Batman and Robin was an abhorration. But Feige is correct, it hit the absolute worst that could possibly ever be (gee, just like Obama!) and paved the way for far better to follow (gee, I hope just like Obama).

nero, it is definitely a movie better (or can ONLY be) enjoyed with de-lysergic acid. Just like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and that was Kubric!

Of course, I would put right up there with Batman & Robin every single stinkburger Superman movie ever made. EVERY SUPERMAN MOVIE SUCKED!!!! NO DIRECTOR HAS EVER PRODUCED A SINGLE WATCHABLE SUPERMAN MOVIE!!! Unfortunately, they did NOT set the stage for better movies to be made.
bropous - 10/21/2009, 7:39 AM

This movie was so bad it was good! It's both heartbreaking and funny, but once you get past the HUGE disapoointment of Bane being so tragically misused, it's unintentionally hilarious! It's almost a spoof of Batman it's so bad! Woof! The dialogue is absolute garbage! They dumbed it down so much it's genious! And the cliches!! Ugh! So many mistakes! It's kind of fun to watch now, knowing that it didn't actually ruin the franchise! I've always watched this one and pointed out the mistakes to myself, cringing at where they went wrong... too bad. What a waste, but a good lesson learned! The forerunner to X3!!!
JonF - 10/21/2009, 3:50 PM
@Wyatt

I honestly think he was a great choice as far as the casting goes.

I mean think about it.

George Clooney playing Bruce Wayne, a cool, charasmatic, charming, rich playboy who gets all the ladies?

IT PRACTICALLY WRITES ITSELF!

If the directing had been good, he could have easily been the best Batman. Shame that they wasted it, though.
MovieTheaterLad - 10/22/2009, 12:59 PM
@MTL

i guess clooney wasnt awful, but come on, arnold for mr freeze. Thats unexceptable.

and the direction was horrible.
wyatt1234 - 10/23/2009, 9:44 AM
Hey you guys ever notice that batgirl in that movie is from England, and she dosen't even have a British accent?!
legder20 - 10/23/2009, 2:38 PM
very few see the point that joel is not creative and simply worked with what he was handed. they have tim burtons batman blended into an adam west 70's sitcom.

we love this movie bacause it is top names being plastak, yes, plaz tak.In fact the whole movie is an action figure ad, which we have no problem with.

hopefuly we will make it through a long halloween or dark victory and bring on the contaigion, and catyclism.

sooner we reach "No Mans Land" the better. 4b
C4 - 10/25/2009, 1:32 PM
i'll have to admit that when it came out i loved it. with that being said, when it did come out i was 11. i was just into it becasue it was a batman movie, and i didn't know what a good movie was at the time. now that i am older and much more mature (kinda) i understand how bad the movie actually is. but at the same time it is fun to go back and watch things things that i thought were cool then and realize that i was jsut a little kid and any kind of superhero made me happy.
DrRockit13 - 10/25/2009, 10:07 PM
riddle me this...
..why are people on cbm.com so f*cking hilarious!?! i read an article and the comments to catch up with a discussion and end up bursting out laughing! the pictures and everything are great! commenters, you make my day haha.

and i agree, great movie... if you are looking to laugh and see a spoof hero movie practically!
