Green Lantern Writers And Artists Give Their Thoughts On The Movie Costume

Green Lantern comic book writers and artists talk about the costume in the upcoming superhero adaptation!

Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly debuted a first look at Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern in his CG costume. Many fans think that the costume looks very good (I think it looks awesome), there were also a lot of negative comments, most of them referring to a weird looking mask.

Now, some of the creators, writers and artists of the Green Lantern comic books give their thoughts on the CG movie costume:

- Patrick Gleason:

"Looks very cool! But I'll reserve my final judgment for when I see it in action up on the screen. I did just see one of the interior shots from the EW issue and Renoylds is wearing the brown bomber jacket. That really made me go, 'Wow, that's Hal Jordan!"

- Ron Marz:

"It looks like a Green Lantern costume, and it seems pretty cool to me. It undeniably says ‘Green Lantern’ to the uniniated, and that’s what matters, rather than which details are different from the version in the comic. I can’t get caught up in the insanity of judging an entire film on one still photo. The important thing is what this costume looks like on the screen, in motion, not what it looks like Photoshopped onto a magazine cover."

- Neal Adams:

"I would love to like the costume, and I suppose I like the effort, but it has seemed to me that the advantage of the originating company to control the property would be followed by a desire and a commitment to keep the character as created. Many hands have worked on this character. It seems awfully disrespectful to all those people to allow an outside designer to undo all that work and effort.

Perhaps it will work out for the best. I certainly hope so. Because I am 100% behind the project. But I will say, had I been in charge, I would have seen to it that it bore a far more real resemblance to the original."

- Beau Smith:

"Every transition from comic book to film has to have a tweak or two. When you are dealing with the creative world, all artists must make their mark. That’s why they are hired. Add to this that the suits/money people will also try and stick their finger in the pie as well. This costume is not that much of a stray from the original comic book version. There is just enough of a change to satisfy the studios that they “updated” the look without offending the core comic book audience.

I think they did very well with the hardest part — the mask. In my opinion, I see nothing that stands out as terrible, causing the villagers to light the torches and head to Hollywood. On my two-year run of writing Guy Gardner, I had the opportunity to write the Hal Jordan character many times. During that time, his costume changed a few time through editorial and the event changes of the time. It looks good and it’s fly."

Martin Campbell is directing the upcoming adaptation and it stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins and Temuera Morrison.

Green Lantern is set to hit theatres on June 17, 2011.

Wolvie09: Well, some of them really like the costume and some think that it should look a little more like the comic book version. Personally, I like the alien look of the costume, and I think it will look great on screen. What are your thoughts?

It looks like he wrapped himself in radioactive seaweed. The mask I can dig. The costume that looks like Martian Manhunter vomit..... not so much.

I like the look..its supposed to be alien considering its origins. Now remember the comics are limited in terms of the artists abilities this we have a little more creativity when it comes to the theatrical version. Look at Watchmens costume changes, they faired much better in terms of the film version.

i try to keep an open mind, but i really hate the costume. i don't like a single thing about it. why go for an alien look instead of a more technological and practical one? it just looks bad to me.

The costume looks great for a movie. If that costume were to be drawn, it would look horrible. At the same time, if the drawn costumes with their green "halo" were to be put on screen, they would fail epically. How would that green "halo" translate to a 3D realm? They would end up just eliminating it, and you would just end up with a guy in spandex. It's better off this way.

I'm with Neal Adams. I want to like it, but it strayed away from the original. That was also my problem with the X-men movies.

Honestly, I'm not too crazy about it. I wanted something more militant, less light show.

I do gotta say, I like the mask. Especially that they gave it the white eye pieces.

Doesnt gl have to do with alot of alien stuff? other planets and alien gls? i kinda like this suit. it could have been alot worse!

I like Green Lantern a lot, especialy the Hal Jordan version. I was suprised to see the suit a lot different than the comic book version but then I thought "it makes sense". It's more of an organic suit to fit the needs of the GL member and his power rather than to look more stylish for a model shot. So I do like this suit. I hope they put a little bit more stuff on the suit to make it cooler if not, oh well, it's still cool anyways.

I've been reading and collecting Green Lantern since Showcase #22. I don't like the costume at all. It appears to much like muscle painted over.Too organic and too different from the original. When I see it I think of the first time I saw Shaq's Steel costume, Catwoman's (Holly Berry) costume, Routh's Superman costume, and the Trailer for Jonah Hex. If the movie isn't true to the character visually it will fail, this has been proven by the aforementioned films. I was excited about this film from the moment it was announced. Now I could care less. At least we will have another animated feature

If the suit comes comes the ring he can probably change it at will they should have different suits for each lantern because it will come from their imaginations right ?

posted this in response to someone last night, but it was late and i doubt anyone read it. so i'm shamelessly reposting my own comment.

as an admitted GL-worshipper and person that's meh-about-everything-else, i too was confused and uncertain this morning when i saw it the first time. i really thought i'd hate anything that wasn't true-to-source, but the more i think about it the more i realize that what works in the comics wouldn't work in live action. for one, the traditional uniform looks like my daughter's dance leotard. great for comics, but i don't need to see a big round kelly green butt mooning me when reynolds is shown from behind.

but more importantly, the designers for a movie aren't designing a costume in 1959 for fans of "forbidden planet" and "superman," but rethinking it as if nobody's ever seen it before 2011... as if the STORY began in 2011, which in the movieverse it DOES. so they're thinking about a uniform that will look...

1. unique, ancient, and alien
2. dynamic (kinetic and organic, because comics are still but the fun of movies is that they, um, MOVE!)
3. visually appealing (having some texture and movement)
4. logical for a space cop (somewhat intimidating and maybe somewhat camouflagey)

more i think about it, more i think this is the most logical result... can't really picture what else they could have come up with that would work better.

I have been a GL fan since i watch Superfriends as a kid. I have been waiting for a Green Lantern movie my whole life. This uniform looks like The Green Lantern. I don't give a shit if anyone hates it or likes it. It is the Green Lantern and that's that. I am just happy that they are actually making a Green Lantern film, and a respectable one to boot.

This is worse than the Flames on Optimus Prime debate.

FYI Neal Adams, as much as I love and admire his work (he is probably my all time fav Batman and GL artist), is an asshole. I've met him on 4 occasions and every single time, he's rude, arrogant and a knee jerk contrarian.
Of course he hates this costume. 2 years ago at Comic Con, I visited his booth to have him sign something for me and he told me he hated Ethan Van Sciver's redesign as well, so...take it for what it's worth.
Whomever posed the question to him had to know what his response was going to be.

The pick looks pretty weak. The face at least. The costume design makes it look like the suit is the source of power. But doesnt mean I wont be there opening night :)

Fanboys got a point... and adams is also unbelievably full of himself. if he'd come up with this redesign he woulda loved it. personally i'm more interested in ron marz's opinion. not the world's pick for the best GL artist, but the guy that drew the comics i fell in love with. wonder what mike grell thinks.

@docgl... what exactly was the huge change in routh's costume? not recalling.

and no matter how many issues you have in your collection, if your loyalty is to the costume more than the character it just tells me that you aren't all that great a fan anyway. i know that's harsh, but this debate is really getting tired.

The glowing organic green looks great, but that should not have stopped them from going with the black sides and legs and white gloves. Plus, this is only one shot. I remember reading a description a few months back that the suit was CG and did have the same coloration as the suit in the comic. Maybe it will look like we all expected. Maybe this should not have been their first pic release.

I really don't like it. I hate the weird lines in the suit, and the top of his visor looks weird but I'm not exactly sure why. I think it might be that it looks quite low and close to his eyes, hmmm.
I was never crazy about this film and the promotional images haven't changed my view at all. Maybe a trailer will make it better.

@longbowhunter I respect your opinion but I have to take issue with the idea of Hollywood undermining the comic book industry. If anything they give it a needed boost. Comic Books, in their current form, are a dying medium. Some think that digital will take it over almost entirely in the next 5-10 years. Hollywood is one of the only things that gets new young readers into mainstream comics.
I think the only time Hollywood undermines the comic industry is when they do it a disservice by producing adaptations where the director or studio is apathetic to the source material. Catwoman, F4, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Punisher, Elektra, Jonah Hex, etc. In most cases though, the people involved general want to do a good job and give the fans something they will like. A lot of the designers, etc. work hard to create something that is at the same time true to the comics yet unique for a new audience. Sometimes they fail when they are unable to fully realize their vision but they still try and I guarentee WB or Marvel, in this post Iron Man/Dark Knight world, are trying to create movies that fans want to see. And even if I'm wrong, this costume is hardly an argument for Hollywood undermining the comic industry. We haven't even seen a full body shot yet.
