Talking to Slash Film, director Matthew Vaughn shared more info on making the upcoming comic book film X-Men: First Class. He addressed rebooting the franchise, his take on the characters, story and more. He also talked about making a sequel to Kick-Ass. Check it out below.

On making a standalone film:

"My main goal was to make as good a film that could stand on its own two feet regardless of all the other films. However I thought anything that worked in all the other movies, and I could have some fun with nodding towards, I would. But my main rule was, ‘You know what, we’re trying to reboot and start a whole new X-Men franchise’ and therefore, making a film work on its own two feet was far more important than trying to be referential to the prior movies."

On the characters chosen for X-Men: First Class, he said:

"That was already done for me. When I came aboard, the characters were already done and ironically I’d always wanted to do a Bond movie so I sort of thought I could have my cake and eat it too. I can do a Bond film and an X-Men movie at the same time. And I’d always liked political, Cold War, espionage thrillers so it was sort of the back drop that got me more excited. Magneto and Professor X were the main thrust of the film so all the supporting characters were already picked for me and I thought whoever picked them did a good job."

On the expectations for this film:

"I’d rather people’s expectations are low and they’re excited than high and disappointed. And I’m a big believer, I mean I remember talking to Daniel Craig about this when he was doing Bond and he was being absolutely destroyed by the web and I said ‘Look dude, your work is gonna do the talking and they’re gonna all eat their hats and apologize and say you’re great’ and I’m a big believer that my job is to make the film and not to worry about what everyone else thinks. And if I make a film that people like, then great, if I make a film that people don’t like then… I mean, that’s my job and you can’t worry about pleasing people. I just try and make as good a film as possible and if people like it, great, and if they don’t, I tried my best."

Regarding the possible sequel, he said:

"You could do hundreds. We’ve got from 62 to 2000, whenever that was set. The fun thing for this, sequel-wise, is you can go through the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s now. If people go see it, I think there’s a lot of sequels to do, I’ve got lots of ideas but I also don’t like to curse it because too many times in my life now I’ve been asked about if there’s gonna be a sequel to a film which I just directed and then that film doesn’t do as well in the US box office and I go, 'Eh, guess not.'

As for making the sequel to Kick-Ass:

"We’re still discussing that at the moment. We might do it. People forget that Kick Ass we made for $28 million and now with DVD and everything else has made $225 million in revenue so it’s done great business. A lot of people say it could be like Austin Powers how the first one people couldn’t get their heads around, they all discovered it on video and then the second one was a huge blockbuster. My theory is I don’t know how to make sure Kick Ass 2 is as good as Kick Ass 1. I enjoyed making the movie so much and I loved working with all the characters in it so who knows? There could be one but if I do a sequel to that it’s gotta be just as good, if not better."

Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jason Flemyng, Nicholas Hoult, Kevin Bacon, Caleb Landry Jones, Lucas Till, Jennifer Lawrence and January Jones, X-Men: First Class is set to hit theatres on June 3!

@WittySupername: Oh, he didn't give much thought about it? Well what do you know... So that's why this film is getting so many positive reviews. I guess that's the secret.

@Intruder: If the film is a success, it will help them launch a new franchise. So as of now, it's both. But it's a prequel to X1 and X2 in a sense of taking some things from certain characters.

@Intruder: I think they are looking at it as some sort of a reboot. You can see how everyone involved mentions the word reboot in one way or the other. Everything depends on the success of this film. Because clearly they took only Xavier and Magneto's stories from the original trilogy for this one.

And honestly, I don't what's the big deal. I mean there will be a connection to X1 and X2 but only for Magneto and Charles. Everything else consider a reboot. That's how I look at it.

Intruder being a sore loser fanboy. Don't be mad that a real director isn't trying to please the fanboys. He's too busy making a real film with real story telling and emotion.

@HankMcCoyAIDS

Second that, this is just like the Ghost Rider 2 shit, they just don't decide on what is this.

I'll take it like a reboot

Intruder, if you want Cyclops and the other main characters to be in the present time than Magneto and Xavier would have to spend their prime years in the 60's so their age is relative to the other X-men in present time.

I think that this is going to turn into a Batman Begins scenario where that movie could be taken as a form of setup to Burton's Batman and leave the franchise at that or, like what eventually happened, it could spawn a sequel that separates it completely from the previous films.

I think this film will be a success and we will probably be seeing a sequel that sets up a brand new franchise for the X-men, and no return to Marvel Studios for a long time, which may be okay because I like a movie that makes me think a bit while I'm being entertained by 'splosions.

"I want a reboot, I want a reboot, what? This is a reboot? [frick] this shit, I want continuity!":)

Mackellan was 61 during the 1st X-men in 2000, if the guys are 30 in First Class (1962) than the aging would be off by 10 years, but since ages are never mentioned there is no intrusion on logic as 5 years grace could easily be given to either era, it's really a non issue.

Yeah, and how would you know trudy? Stop being such a whiner, it's embarrassing for the rest of us. You just by-pass all the strong points that people bring up in response to your whining and nitpick on shit people don't care about.

I must say, this site and the First class threads get more entertaining every day! Lets face it gang...The movie is done, the critics hail it, and all the griping in the world about canon and such is just so much "Boo-hooing". Who cares if the director is flip about canon? Can't we just watch the damned movie before drawing conclusions? I for one am just glad that CBMs are being produced! If that's not good enough for ya, than you don't have issues...you have a whole bloody subscription! Support CBMs, or don't come here, I say.
I hope this film, and every other CBM in the near future rocks ass, because my personal opinions aside, I'd rather be treated to them than some idiotic rom-com, or made for theater MTV tripe.

End of rant, thanks for playing...

I was excited about this film until the past 2 days with leaked cameo spoiler & just the arrogance Vaughn has sprung on his idea of this film. Not including the continuity mess. I don't know. I'm a huge X fan & just to see them do whatever they want to these characters I've known for so long is really sad. The stories are laid out in comics black & white but somehow they wanna just do whatever they (FOX) wants.

@slaine etc, im looking forward to the film, i think it will be great! The thing that upsets me is that FOX has destroyed the posibility of Marvel making a series of x men films! i think it would be too much to have 3 deifferent incarnations of x-men! argubaly not but more than likely! which is a real shame as im sure marvel would have made a truely epic picture!

The man's got one #@$%$ of an ego. He may be talented, but I think he likes to hear himself talk. With Hugh Jackman making a cameo in this one, I think it's just a prequel.

Was fine with it being a prequel, now I'm bummed. If it's a reboot now, as he claims, why not start with the original First Class then? & why make references to the original X-trilogy? Everything should look and feel different to set it apart from the other X-movies. There's no way someone can think Burton's Batman & Nolan's Batman to be in the same continuity. So he should have approached it the same way.
With that said I'm still gonna see it with no ill feelings towards it. Just wish Fox would set out a plan, stick with it & follow through, rather than jump al over the place with this franchise
