It's been a hard week for Martin Campbell's
Green Lantern. The almost universal negative reaction to the comic book adaptation left fans wondering what went wrong. Film currently has only 21% on
Rotten Tomatoes with 122 reviews. Now, the first box-office results have arrived, and
Green Lantern (3D) made as much as
X-Men: First Class (2D) and a little more than
Thor (3D).
From
Deadline:
"Warner Bros is very pleased with DC Entertainment's Green Lantern 3D opening of $3.35M midnight showings from 1,810 venues, which bettered Marvel/Paramount's Thor midnights ($3.2M from 1,800 locations) and were on a par with Marvel/Fox's X-Men: First Class prequel midnights ($3.3M from 1,783 theaters)."
Not really sure about the "very pleased" part. Film's production budget went from $160M to the huge $200M plus marketing. Site goes on to say that Hollywood is expecting around a mid-$50M opening weekend for
Green Lantern, to the possibility of $65M-$70M.
