Director Brian Kirk In Early Talks To Helm THOR 2!

Since Kenneth Branagh won't return for the sequel, studio is trying to find a new director. Now, according to this new report, Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk is in negotiations to helm THOR 2 for Marvel and Disney. Hit the jump for more details!

And so it begins...Marvel Studio and Disney are moving forward with THOR 2, as the film is expected to begin production in early 2012. And as we all know, director Kenneth Branagh won't be returning for the sequel, so now we have the news that Brian Kirk is in talks to helm the film.

From Variety:

"Brian Kirk is in early negotiations to helm "Thor 2" for Marvel Studios and Disney, which will bring Chris Hemsworth's hammer-wielding superhero back to the bigscreen for his next adventure after "The Avengers."

A number of other helmers had been considered for the "Thor" sequel, including Drew Goddard ("Cabin in the Woods"), James McTeigue ("Ninja Assassin"), Noam Murro ("300: Battle of Artemesia") and Breck Eisner ("The Crazies")."


Brian Kirk directed the first two episodes of Luther, a great crime television series starring Idris Elba. He also directed one episode of Dexter and his latest work was seen in 3 episodes of HBO's hit show Game of Thrones. Don Payne is writing the upcoming superhero sequel, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the God of Thunder.

THOR 2 is set to hit theatres on July 26, 2013!

Wow... that's a pretty shitty list of directors. And this guy's only directed TV shows, what a step down from Kenneth Branagh. Can't help but feeling this is going to be a rush job.

This guy directed the first two episodes of Luther, so he DEFINITELY has my vote. Still need to check out Game of Thrones, but Kirk is the best choice for sure.

@Dynamo, you've got to start somewhere, right?Look at JJ Abrams.He'd only directed a few episodes of Felicity, Alias and Lost when he got Mission Impossible 3.

Neill Blomkamp had only directed shorts before District 9.

Joseph Kosinski hadn't directed anything before Tron Legacy.

I've seen a lot of the things he's directed including Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Luther and those are very respectable credits.

I'm optimistic.

Great choice, 2013 is going to be a bitchin' year for CBM's

For some reason I don't think it should be called Thor 2 they should do what The Lord Of The Rings did and have a subtitle maybe

Haven't seen anything the guy has done, but I hear Game of Thrones is a good show so I am willing to give it a chance. Everyone has to start somewhere, and a lot of good directors started out in TV.

My top choice is still Andrew Adamson (Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian), mainly because of his visual sensability and his ability to capture the warmth of the magical elements, along with the darker elements. Plus his good working relationship with Disney would be a good choice.

The Dexter episode he directed was awesome, had a great vision on the episode, so I guess he would be good on it.

Only T.V. episodes??? Not one movie? I am not stoked. never heard of him. Oh, Well at least i have the first one IF it is bad. Oh and the Avengers. Time will tell.

I can't comment on the quality of any of the shows, since I haven't seen anything he's done. I just feel like it should be someone with more experience. But I suppose Marvel's kinda cheap. Always have been really...

I wouldn't dumb down the directors.
Everyone has to get their start somewhere, and this is a big opportunity for those directors!

Kenneth Branagh basically got his big break acting on tv shows and films. The only other film I've ever seen him direct was Mary Shelly's Frankenstein .. only because we watched it in class a year ago.

@teabag, I don't think people actually know the name of TV directors, unless they're notable like David Nutter, but people do look up their credits and they recognize what specific episode they directed.

Dexter and Game of Thrones are great shows too so this could wind up being pretty good for the Thor franchise. I do hope for a more in depth and engrossing movie than pt. 1 so I like the change.
