In early October, it was reported that Seattle's real life superhero Phoenix Jones was arrested for assault. Later in the media, Jones has revealed his true identity. His real name is Ben Fodor, a mixed martial artist. There was a lot of talk about what will happen, but most people were hoping for the best and that it won't be serious. Well, according to Publicola.com, Ben Fodor was fired from his (day) job, where he was teaching life skills to autistic kids. Not only did he lose his job, but he also got a letter from the state Department of Social and Health Services, saying that he is banned from working with children. More below...

"I had to leave work in the middle of the day,” Jones says. "It was embarrassing." Jones explained that he has worked with five developmentally disabled autistic children—who ranged in age from four to 18 years old—for the last five years at their homes and state care facilities, going shopping with them, teaching them to balance checkbooks, and going for walks.

Now, Jones needs to figure out how to pay bills and everything else, and says that he has offers for fight bouts from the Strikeforce mixed martial arts organization. He also mentions that he plans to start fighting crime in the daytime too. As for that arrest, the case is still being investigated.

So, what are your thoughts on all this?

I think...he is a weirdo.

Probably best that someone who picks fights with criminals doesn't work with kids.

Well, he is working with kids and you can never be too careful.Especially with disabled/autistic kids.I don't know the man, but I'm not sure I trust the judgement of a person who dresses up and goes out assaulting people he perceives as criminals.I certainly don't want him caring for or teaching my nieces or nephews.

I would also think that anyone working with children would probably be subject to disciplinary action or dismissal had they been arrested for assault.Aggression and disabled children don't mix.

Ummm call me stupid for reading up on criminology but there are reasons there are anti-vigilante laws on the books in every major police code. They do more harm than good and theres no way to hold them accountable if they actually hurt someone...

I agree with you tazmaniak.

And there is something wrong with this guy. Why does he dress up? It's a fetish. If he really wanted to make an impact, he wouldn't work alone, and it would not be dressed up like something you'd see out of a comic book. He may get himself killed (the same can also be said of any policeman), but the danger is that people truly admire this guy for ALL that he does. It is admirable that he should go out, make 911 calls, and basically police areas he's in, and there's nothing wrong with breaking up fights. He should not, however, be a role model for kids, especially those with mental impairments.

In this case, the state is right.

this is completely his own fault. he was not careful at all at how he chose where and when to 'fight crime'. he struts around in the daytime rather than at night doing hit and runs, getting in and out before people realize what even happened, which is what he should have been doing. he strutted himself around in day time and took photos with people. he went around telling everyone his real name, and showed his 'hideout' to a news reporter. he can say what he wants, but when it came down to it, he chose publicity and fame over anonymity and actually making a difference. in short: the guy was a huge sellout and a phony.

He's not very well organized as a "superhero." He needs to be stealthier- you know, not always out in the open, and not in the camera every chance he gets. He needs to get rid of that mess he wears- he cant turn his head in that cowl and plus its too big for him to be agile and wouldnt allow him to perform his "mixed martial arts." He needs to be less like a comicbook hero and more like a soldier.

And THAT is how you turn a hero into a villain.

Good going, Department of Social and Health Services.

Your entire "department" just became an accessory.

This is insane! What did he do to children? The guy is trying to help and they want to ruin his life. Making an example out of him for the wrong reason. This highlights everything that is wrong with the system. Would I put on a suit? No, but this is why peope DON'T help other people. Even if you try to hide your identity for your own protection you are still prosocuted worse then someone that sells drugs.

I dreamed about suiting up in body armor and bringin' the bad guys to justice, too. After watching the Superfriends and M.A.S.K..
When I was 9.
Being 'a superhero' doesn't work in real life. Become a private investigator, or a bounty hunter, if you've got the itch to help out the justice system. Hell, become a good, honest cop or a fireman.

If he really plans on fighting crime full time, I support him 100 percent. All he needs to do is get proper training from a ....shh.....police academy...and join a team of other crime fighters....police.......with a little help from some one who can get him to a crime scene....dispatch....then he will be ready! LOOK OUT OUT EVIL DOERS!

Misguided or not, I believe he was trying to do good. Not by wishing things were better but by actually going out there and making things better. For those that say he should not have sought the lime-light, you have to realize there is no anonymity in real life. There are cameras and media everywhere that cannot be escaped. Losing his job is a shame and I wish him well.

Before you guys judge the dude, read up about what he's done:

On Sunday, January 2, 2011, in Lynnwood, Phoenix Jones was witnessed by a man, who asked CBS News to be referred only as "Dan", preventing a car break-in by chasing the perpetrator away. CBS News introduced Dan and Phoenix Jones the following Monday evening.

A few days later, ABC News aired a news story covering Jones. In this report, footage shows Phoenix Jones preventing an intoxicated man from entering his car, threatening to use a stun baton as the man approaches Jones. In the video, a police officer is shown lecturing Phoenix Jones and his group regarding the negative effect masks may have on an intoxicated individual.

On Saturday, the 24th of September 2011, in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle, Phoenix Jones doused a man with pepper spray after he attempted to steal a bus. The driver of the bus had been handing out fliers when another individual attempted to steal the bus. Jones was reported to have intervened and the hijacker escaped with his skin dyed orange due to the spray. Jones says he didn’t receive any help from Seattle police, who took hours to respond to the incident.

On Sunday, October 9, 2011, in Seattle, Jones was arrested for his role in an altercation involving pepper-spray. Close associates, who were present and equipped with a video camera, told reporters that Phoenix Jones broke up an unfair fight between two groups of nightclub patrons. According to police reports, the officers who responded determined that "there was no fight", with one member of the group denying that anyone among them had been fighting. They asked that the masked man be "arrested for attacking them." According to one woman who was involved in the altercation, after an argument had broken out between her group and another, Jones suddenly approached and pepper-sprayed them, saying "I'm a superhero".

The next day, videographer Ryan McNamee uploaded a video online showing that Phoenix Jones did in fact respond to a fight in progress. Jones was released on bail hours later with no charges having been filed. In an unrelated incident several hours earlier, Phoenix Jones had come to the defense of a would-be fight victim. Police arrived after the aggressors had fled. In their report, the police called it a case of "questionable use of pepper spray", but the victim later told the Seattle Times that Jones was indeed a hero who had saved him from "a potential beat-down".

The guy has actually done some good in his community, especially at times when the cops were nowhere to be found. It seems crazy what he does, but we live in a crazy word. We have cops brutalizing and intimidating innocent people. A judicial system that is far from impartial or fair. You can view the video from this incident online. He did save a guy from getting his ass kicked, but the cops are made it personal against him, and now he loses his job from bogus assault charges from the kind of people the system is supposed to protect us from.

I live in the Seattle area and have met the guy he is a stand up dude trying to do some good. When a fight like that happens where its two or three on one most would just stand and watch and do nothing! He doesn't and as crazy as it may sound I think it's cool that there are people out there doing this stuff for real!

idiot. When comic book movies go wrong.

Atleast fight crime on a level that matters. Street crime amounts to nothing.
