Talking to Collider about Immortals, his new film where he plays Theseus, Henry Cavill also shared some more info on his preparation for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. He was asked about source material and if he saw previous films again to get to know the character better. More below.

"I avoided watching anything which was someone else’s interpretation of the source material. I didn’t go back to the movies and watch them. I didn’t go back to the TV series and watch them. I didn’t want to take that and have that influence my interpretation and my performance of the character. Where the character truly belongs and where the character truly comes from is not from the movies or the TV shows; it’s from the comic books. So I went straight to the comic books and had stacks of them and just read and read and read and read and read. I enjoyed so much learning about the character in such a dense manner. The comic books were my source of material; the TV shows and movies were someone else’s interpretation and so I left that to them."

Starring Henry Cavill, Michael Shannon, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner and Ayelet Zorer, Man of Steel is set to hit theatres on June 14, 2013.

Hey Henry, take that suit off and give it to its rightful owner, Tom. Even though Siegel and Shuster won't let Tom wear it, the fact is Tom earned it.

@Superguy man, stop saying you are a Superman fan if you hate iconicSUperman this much.

As fos Cavill, yeah, it's nice to hear him say that, but Snyder is driving this bus...

The Animated Series IS the best interpretation of the character so far imo. Although the show did tone down his powers dramatically so that there would be more of a threat, you get to watch him struggle more. It's not the Superman from the comics towing entire planets, that's for sure.
That being said, they toned down his powers even more in the Justice League series (way too much imo) he was always the first member of the league to go down in a fight or get knocked out. Hawk Girl could've kicked his ass in that show.
Superman SHOULD be a little over powered.

@metropolismarvel I respect your opinion, but you do know Welling doesnt want to wear the suit right? I mean he didnt even wear an actual suit for the finale it was cg! To me the refusal to wear the suit just shows me he doesnt deserve it and is a slap in every fan's face . Plus man,Smallville wasnt that great a show to me. Its time to leave that show in the past and buried where it belongs.

I am getting a serious man crush on this guy, damn! great looks and some brains. I loved his answer, he is the rightful successor of Christopher Reeves.

Ladies, forget that faggot sparking vampire Edward or that little dick singer wannabe Justin whatever... Henry Cavil is what a Superman really should be. Women should know that, repressed lesbians probably don't.

BTW: Tom Welling sucks, he wasn't Superman and never will be Superman.

That´s not exactly a good answer because comic book writers ALSO write Superman based on TV shows they´ve watched and vice versa.

"I was thinking on Christopher Reeve" while writing this, I was thinking on the 60´s "Great Scott" cartoon when writing this, and so on.

Why o why are people still harping on about Tom earning the right to play Superman, he has as much right as Dean Cain. Don't get me wrong I think Tom was perfect for tv's smallville (I'm still a fan) but I have high hopes for Henry from the stills I've seen and articles I've read just like the one above. I think Tom is an ok actor but not strong enough to carry a major film on his shoulders (the Fog) after all they'll be none of this walking to the camera and looking up towards the corner of the room to convey a moment of deep thought or letting one rip.

I dislike a lot of what I've seen and read about this movie thus far, but I do respect Cavill for his approach to the role. He certainly has the right attitude- no previous movies or TV series, go straight to the source material to really get to know what makes the character work. As much as I love the Donner Superman- it is still THE standard by which comic movies should be judged, imo- it is time to see another interpretation of the character.

I am rather curious as to just what Superman comics he's reading- there are certainly enough of them to choose from. I'd hope he's going for a good mix of the character from different time periods, which would allow for different approaches to the character and really learning the full rich history of Superman, with maybe some Elseworlds stories thrown in.
