WETA's Joe Letteri Talks About Visual Effects For Zack Snyder's MAN OF STEEL

The visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri, who worked on such films as Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Lord of the Rings, has revealed that he is also working on Zack Snyder's Superman reboot. Hit the jump to see what he had to say...

Avatar, The Lord of the Rings (The Two Towers and The Return of the King), King Kong, X-Men: The Last Stand are just a couple of big movies Weta Digital's visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri has worked on. Recently, he worked closely with Rupert Wyatt on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, where he and the whole team brought Caesar to life via Andy Serkis' incredible motion capture performance. Now, talking to The Playlist, Letteri revealed that he is working on Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel. He said that Snyder is very much focusing on practical effects rather than going full digital, which is something different than what he usually does with his CGI-heavy movies:

"Zack’s going for pretty much everything in-camera as much as he can. I mean, the reason to think about Superman in CGI, you don’t need him full CGI as a character, because he’s basically a full person. But you just don’t want the flying scenes to look like he’s on a wire. So [the question is] how do you use CG to make that happen, and that’s still kind of being played with right now."

On the flying scenes and how there is still a lot to be done with practical effects, he said:

"I think it could still be refined. Because there’s always room for interpretation there. The idea of a human flying, because you can’t actually tell how they’re powering themselves, leaves it open to trying different things."

Even though he didn't reveal anything about the flying sequences, The Playlist added:

"While Letteri didn’t reveal exactly how they were depicting Superman’s flying sequences, he said that they were primarily focusing on what was in the script and what Snyder wanted rather than referring to the decades upon decades of comic book images they could potentially draw upon as a reference point."

About doing these kind of scenes, Letteri also said:

"That’s completely story-driven. That’s going to depend on your shot and your composition, and the performance, and in that case, that’s kind of Zack’s call – what is he looking for there?"

This is the first time we are hearing that Letteri is connected to Man of Steel, so is this a confirmation that WETA is one of the companies that will work on visual effects? To see what he had to say about Avatar 2 and updating technology for that, click HERE.

Starring Henry Cavill, Michael Shannon, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner and Ayelet Zorer, Man of Steel is set to hit theatres on June 14, 2013.

This would be awesome. I want Superman to have the best special effects out there and WETA is fantastic especially on Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Sure, why use decades upon decades of character reference. Let's change it all!!!!! The more I hear, the less I trust this will be a Superman movie...

@pendahast, Agreed i couldn't care less about Movies sticking close to the source material as half of the comics anyway change origin stories every couple of years!! All i want is a good movie!!

Xenix: Like I said in the article, I'm not sure. But since Letteri is the director and VFX supervisor of Weta Digital, I'm guessing they are among other companies that are working on Man of Steel.

@rbfn04

Look man I'm all for respecting the source material, but this is a movie adaptation, this has also been said about the recent Batman movies. Zack tried adapting Watchmen page for page and same thing with 300 and those are fairly decent movies but they both have one story and one continuity.

Superman has been around for 70 plus years now, there have been plenty of takes on the character since then both in comics and cartoons and TV shows. The reason the recent movies have been sucking is they keep riding Reeves movies. Singer was trying to so hard to be like the reeves movies that he just ended up with a boring product in the end.

Zack Snyder is trying something completely new for ol Supes, Superman needs a new ray of sunlight shined upon him, I love the John Williams theme song for Superman it's legendary, but they need to retire that theme for these new movies, the costume needs to be different (Though I'm not pleased with the costume they went with for the new movie). This movie needs to feel fresh, this is not the 1960s anymore, we don't need that Superman we need a newer version and more polished version.

Weta Digital involved this is great news. why the hell Green Lantern did not get this type of support.

Not sure how Weta's involvement improves a flawed interpretation, but, ok. So the suit will still look crappy with good CGI slow-mo? Meh.

Just don't ****-it-up!, because a second failed reboot will poison the IP in the eyes of Warner Bros and you will not see another attempt for at least 10-15 years.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY

yeah GL is a second tier but if they keep on only focusing on solely Superman and Batman we will never get decent movies of Wonder Woman, The Flash etc.

What powers Superman's flight? Magnetism? They better not make him look like he's skydiving.

@Superguy you hate iconic Superman, dude. Of course you're loving it, homie.

He said he's not going to look thru decades of depictions. What, gonna make SUperman swim trhu the air? More and more I lose trust in this. Hope i'm wrong...
