Talking to Entertainment Weekly, the director of the first Star Wars film, George Lucas, recalls filming Episode IV: A New Hope, what was his inspiration at the time, and the success of the saga.

Unfortunately, EW has no embed code on their videos, so you'll have to click on the image below to check it out:

As many of you know, Lucas directed one chapter of the original trilogy, and he also directed the... prequels. And if you want to check out Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menance in 3D, it will be released on February 10.

No pain, no gain George.

Often adverse conditions create the best environment for something great to come out of it.

It sure did with 'A New Hope'. Bloody masterpiece!

"Painful and unpleasant" perfectly describes all the "fans" who can't stop pissing and moaning like spoiled little girls, instead of growing the hell up and getting over it already. Christ!

I bet George often dreams about driving a bus full of ungrateful fanboy hostages off the side of a thousand foot cliff. Forcing them to listen to Jar Jar Binks and Elmo perform a cover of Hotel California as they fall to their miserable deaths.

@theangrytroll What gives you the impression that I'm jumping on a bandwagon? I was in 3rd grade when SW was in the theaters. Ep. 1-3 are travesties. Lucas wrote those to fit into his original idea and then altered the originals to fit his new trash: midichlorians BS is laughable, OB1 and Ani (snicker) sure don't seem like "friends" and don't get me started on the dialog rip offs (rolls eyes). BTW, Lucas, Han shot 1st (period); [frick] you! I can't even watch the Ep. 1-3 for the saber battles they're so pathetic. I'm beginning to think "true fans" will buy into ANYTHING with a SW TM attached to it. I wonder...how many times you will pay to see Ep. 1 in 3D?

Did you know George Lucas gives most of his money to charity? I'm sure he still has a nice stack of cash, but I don't think he's as money hungry as some of you make him out to be. He probably thinks he really is improving the films... Most don't agree with that. I think he should have put both versions out for the films, the original and his new version. It would keep fans happy and he still gets to tinker with the movie.

Clone Wars series is really amazing. It's gotten so much better over the past seasons. I can't wait for S4 to hit blu ray so I can watch it.

Oh, and watching the prequels again, they're not THAT bad. Definitely not up to the level of the originals, but not bad films.

I honestly don't mind the prequels sure they are filled with plotlines and bad dialogue but that just reminds me of some early sci fi films and really quite entertains me. I don't think he is the one wanting all the money its the studio they are losing a lot of money all the time from failed projects so it bound to be that there gonna dig out they're cash cow and milk it dry every five years.
That's my two cents, hate on them all you want they will never disappear.

A so called "true fan" is someone who accepts everything with his favourite label on it, they do not assess for quality out of misguided loyalty to a franchise they feel needs their full support and undying faith. In short, they are no more misguided and brainwashed as cult members accepting nothing but the official word from their chosen centre of their affections be it crap, truth or lies.

Not only do people in this mode need to grow up, they need medical and psychiatric help to realise their sad situation of their devout acceptance, not questioning and not assessing the very basics of their own misguided followings.

Thank god I'm not a "True fan", people like that may grow up physically due to the laws of nature, but remain childish and immature for the rest of their lives because they managed to brainwash themselves at a young age!

@Vermillion - He's hardly Bill Gates in what he gives away to charity! He makes millions and he gives away a few thousand, that does not equate to "giving most of his money away". Like every tight-ass celebrity in Hollywood he does the rounds of "My Favourite charity" to fill the checkbox of "I'm giving back some to the masses" But he and most of those greedy celebrities with more money than they'll ever spend aint about to give the majority of a single cent they earn to any charity, its all pure front.

Bill Gates, now there's a man giving away most of his money to charity, in fact he intends to give away every single penny by the time he's dead!

@ceejay Yeah the so called true fans don't except anything with the label i mean look at the Christmas special or half the cartoons + tv shows/ cgi movies they just don't bash the prequels because they find some entertainment within them and if that's being a brainwashed cult follower then i guess that makes me one for the superman films because i liked returns or how about hulk fans who dont mind the 2003 hulk and actually prefer it for its emotional an dramatic strength.
matt28
matt28 - 1/27/2012, 9:41 PM
p.s. @ceejay George does use his money for charity, he just doesn't go around and parading his generosity not saying gates did but most celebs nowadays do.

Why so much hate for the prequels on here? Could they have been better? Yes. Were they well done? I definitely thought so. I found them a suitable origin trilogy. Definitely made a little cheesier and with less "heart and soul" than the originals but I liked them and I've always been a huge Star Wars fan. It blows my mind how many times I've seen them over and over and over. (Thanks Spike Network). The build up to the Obi Wan - Anakin showdown was awesome and my absolute favorite moment in all of the movies is when Obi Wan apologizes to Padme about what he must do and gets up and walks out. An amazing scene. Which was in the prequels.

@matt28 You're absolutely right! There IS nothing wrong with Lucas and the prequels (uses Jedi powers).

matt28 - 1/27/2012, 10:07 PM
@NoThatGuy i never said they're was nothing wrong with them i pointed out how they had plot holes and bad dialogue, but i honestly believe they are better than most of the sequels/prequels you get for a film i mean it could have been a lot worse sure 1 was boring an 2 was a bit better but overall forgetful and 3 well i liked that one simply for the obi vs anakin scene. But not once did i think when i came out of the theater that was the worst shit i have ever seen i was actually satisfied, i paid for a entertaining sci fi, and that is what i got, not a space opera like the first but a good ol sci fi flick.

Revan will happen and so will the Jedi Civil War. Hopefully the Great Galactic War will as well. Hopefully the best directors will be inspired to helm the projects so justice will be done to them.

I men, shit.. George has enough money, If He Wanted To, he could lay out $500 million, hire Darren Aronofsky, Matthew Vaughn, David Fincher And Christopher Nolan and get the Entire old republic history produced Right Now. At least Three Separate Story Threads Simultaneously. He Has The Money To Do So. if he wanted to..
