There is a lot to talk about the first official trailer for the Shane Black-helmed Iron Man 3, which shows Tony Stark being left truly on his own against a powerful enemy. The sombre tone and intense moments from the trailer suggest that we will see something a little bit different this time around. While we have all seen the trailer (probably dozens of times by now), let's take a look at some of the scenes that are quite interesting and that you might have missed. Possible spoilers below, so in case you don't want to know anything, stop reading this right now.
- ARMOR HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN
This will probably be the key element of the film. In the trailer, we see how the new Iron Man armor acts on its own. Now, those scenes could only be dream sequences, but if we look at the official plot synpopsis for the film (as well as that the film is based on a comic book series
Extremis) all signs point to a control change between Tony and the suit. In the synopsis, it says:
" As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?"
- THE AVENGERS CONSEQUENCES
You thought that all the destruction and deaths in
The Avengers was going to be ignored? Not so fast. At the beginning of the trailer, we hear Tony Stark saying how he has trouble sleeping and nightmares because of what happened, and clearly, we will see his struggle as he tries to fix everything. It was a good idea to do this, as it sets a story for other characters like Thor and Captain America, which sequels we will see in 2013 and 2014.
- PEPPER AND HAPPY IN DANGER
In the trailer, there are two moments that show a situation where people who are very close to Tony, are in danger. The first one is Jon Favreau's character Happy Hogan, a long-time bodyguard of Tony Stark. We see him lying on the floor, heavily injured. The second moment? A rather intense moment with Pepper seemingly being held captive, where we see her screaming and crying. Now, will Happy or Pepper meet their end? That remains to be seen. But, after the "death" of a fan-favorite character in
The Avengers, it seems like stakes need to be high in Phase Two.
- A LOVE TRIANGLE: TONY, PEPPER, ALDRICH
Aldrich Killian, played by Guy Pearce, is a character we don't know much about. In the comics, Killian developed the Extremis virus and sold it to terrorists. It's still not clear how big of a role it is, but it seems we will some conflict between Tony and Aldrich, especially over Pepper. We don't see much of the character in the trailer, and it's definitely not a coincidence when Stark says
"...there is a hundred people who want to kill me", the screen cuts to Killian. We'll see how much problems is he going to cause Tony in the film.
- MANDARIN AND HIS TEN RINGS
The Mandarin is the archenemy of Iron Man. A character fans have been waiting to see since the first film. And now, they got their wish. Played by an Academy Award-winning actor Ben Kingsley, it should be great to see this character finally come to life. In the trailer (even though it's just for a second), we can spot that Mandarin will have his ten rings.
Iron Man films have always been a bit grounded in Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it remains to be seen if these rings will have any fuction in the film.
- MYSTERY CHARACTER
For a brief moment in the trailer, we see a woman pushing Stark against a wall, while he looks all beaten up. This could very well be Stephanie Szostak's character, and there is a possibility that she might be playing a female version of Firebrand, who gets recruited by Mandarin in the comics. The reason why I'm putting this on the list, is because Szostak's name is pretty high on the credits, meaning that the character could be pivotal.
- A WINTER SETTING
You see, there is something Shane Black likes to do with the films he is writing or directing. Four of the film he worked on are set during the holiday season (
Lethal Weapon,
The Long Kiss Goodnight,
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,
The Last Boy Scout). Set photos suggested we will see this happening with
Iron Man 3 too, and now I guess it's confirmed, based on the trailer.
