J.J. Abrams Comments On STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Footage Debut & More!

Earlier today, Paramount Pictures revealed a teaser poster for Star Trek Into Darkness, a sequel to the very successful reboot from 2009. The first 9 minutes from the film will be attached to the IMAX 3D screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. We will also get a teaser trailer soon, which running time is 1:03. Talking to IGN at the 100th finale party for Fringe, director J.J. Abrams was asked about how he feels regarding finally showcasing the first footage:

"You know, I’m excited because we’ve been working on this for awhile, and the idea of getting some of the movie out there to the world is going to be a real thrill for us, and as always you just hope people will like what they see."

As for filming Star Trek Into Darkness with IMAX cameras, he said:

"It was amazing. Part of it was challenging because of the technical aspects of it, the machinery of it. The cameras themselves are a little unwieldy and a little loud and unpredictable. But then you go to dailies and you watch on this massive screen these images that you’ve shot having been filmed on a negative that’s eight times bigger than what you normally use, and you cannot believe how good it looks. So that’s exciting! But unlike Ghost Protocol, a lot of what we shot is integrated into special effects and visual effects in a way that I cannot wait for people to see. I think it really is mind-blowing, how it looks. The IMAX frame, I think, is really the best way to see a movie."

Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller, Star Trek Into Darkness will hit theatres on May 17, 2013.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

I had only seen a couple The New Generation episodes, mostly when nothing else was on late at night. Otherwise, I was not a fan in any capacity. Star Trek 2009 didn't get my attention till the 2nd trailer was released (not counting the teaser). When 2009 was all said and done, it beat out Avatar as my favorite blockbuster of that year.

Now here we are, I was never really excited for this sequel till the casting news of Cumberpatch came rolling in. Once they said they were filming on 70mm, I put it in most most anticipated list. And now, I honestly have to say: although I previously said Iron Man 3 will be the best of the blockbusters next year, The Dark World is starting to look even better. But Star Trek Into Darkness will probably be the biggest-scaled, best cinematic experience of 2013. The title sounds like a theme park ride and promise of a thrilling villain, all of which are being shown in IMAX, adds to that statement. And that poster was awesome.

I can't wait to see that nine (9) minute preview.

@CoolantTek Robocop got pushed back to 2014. And of that I list, I think only RIPD and Ridick will turn out bad. Oh, and there's The Lone Ranger which may be John Carter 2.0 at the box office, despite Depp. Otherwise, I thought 2012 was going to be good, Man Of Steel and Pacific Rim are big enough to make a satisfying summer season for me.

I think GI Joe: Retaliation might surprise us. Or it may end up like John Carter too. I ain't paying for the 3D. Not for that film.

Seems like Abram is really inspired by Nolan when he's making these movies

@Nomis-you don't think the original Star Trek series was "dumbed down", at all? Or the Star Trek films that featured William Shatner as Kirk? You thought THOSE were more intelligent films/tv episodes?

I grew up with the original TV series and enjoyed the films as well. To be honest, I never watched "The Next Generation" or the subsequent spinoffs so I can't speak in regards to whether those were more intelligent or not.

As far as the remake/reboot of Star Trek went, the time-travel plot was very well done. I felt that it was a highly thought provoking and exciting film, with just enough humor. Pine did an excellent job of updating Kirk, a couple of times he even seemed like a different version of Shatner (when Bones was injecting him with a myriad of "cures") and Quinto really nailed Spock. Throwing Nemoy in there as the older Spock was enjoyable and Bana's villian was top notch and sympathetic.

Oh, and I don't have ADD.

I never liked ny of the star trek shows but I went into this movie with low expectations and left shocked to how good it was. It lets the fans of the old school star trek and new generation people that didn't like it both enjoy it. I'm only seeing the hobbit IMAX just to see the 9 minute prologue. Very excited to see this movie.

I just hate that after Wrath-o-Khan, it always comes down to a big spaceship battle at the end. Or even battling throughout the movie. The space submarine battles are my least favorite thing about Trek.

I would much prefer sticking to brawls and the occasional hand phaser shoot out like TOS.

After all the hype for the 2009 movie I watched the DVD and couldn't see what the fuss was about. The plot could have been a single episode from a TV series...there's nothing exceptional about it. Having said that the new actors did a good job portraying the characters.

As Nomis said the original TV series touched on subjects that were taboo in the 60s. The producers the had he balls to do this. I wished films had the same kind of oulook.

As for the teaser poster I am getting an Akira vibe to this so hopefully it should make an interesting plot.

@Nomis I see you are quite the long time Trek fan. I do have to disagree with you on TNG not commenting much on social or world issues though. I think they covered alot of ground that TOS didn't yet went a great distance to ensure it co-existed in the same universe and respected TOS. I like that they took Picard down more of a political captain road versus Kirk's futuristic swashbuckler. TNG had a much deeper look into the Federation and addressed alot of social and world issues with the driving back bone of the prime directive with all the new worlds and species they visited. Both TNG and TOS are great and groundbreaking in their own rights imo.

@DarKnightRises I love Nolan's Batman films and Abrams' Star Trek reboot, but that comment makes no sense.

I grew up watchin' the original series on TV, and for the 60's it was very entertainin'. I loved all the aliens, time travel, visits to different worlds...but, what I liked most 'bout the series, and the six films that followed, is the way the characters interact with each other. Kirk, Bones, and Spock made for a amusin' core of characters, also the other crew members got to shine at times, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov, and Sulu.
The 2009 version was a good remake to me, 'cause the actors got the characters down pat. Esp, Kirk, Bones and Spock (he looked like a young Leonard Nimoy). So, regardless of what does and doesn't happen on the movie, as long as the characters stay in form, it will be a good one for me.

And one other comment, my son is a big Star Wars fan, he likes Star Trek but not anywhere near as much as Star Wars. To me, Star Trek/Star Wars is like any of the great battles we fans tend to have..... Marvel/DC... Avengers/Justice League .... Avengers/X-men.... Halo/Call Of Duty ... I like Star Wars also, but couldn't resist, so I told my son that watchin' Star Trek is like watchin' Jurassic Park, while watchin' Star Wars is like watchin' Barney.... hahahaha

I'm not a Trekkie but I LOVE JJ's Star Trek film! I'm going to watch it again on blu-ray soon :P

I'm really excited for STID, not only because we finally get a sequel to a good film but also that Cumberbatch is plain the villain and they use IMAX camera's!!! OMG OMG OMG it's still so amazing!!!

I'm very curious at how the VFX will look because they have to make them on a much higher resolution so I'm sure it's gonna be great.

Now deeply hoping that I'll get to see the prologue in my country as well!!!

@Nomis I think you'd be surprised with it. I've seen every episode of both and they both succeed in different ways. The latter half of TNG is less fantastical than the first and like I said becomes much more political and involves divides throughout the Federation. TOS got me hooked but TNG took it to another level imo.

I never liked Star Trek as a kid it felt way to stale and just too uptight for some reason. Watched like 5 episodes of the more recent series Enterprise and liked that but it wasnt until Star Trek 2009 that i cared for the series and now i cant wait for the sequel
