Fans will recognize the new suit as Tony Stark's Extremis armour. And even though the "Iron Man" DVD contains a featurette called "Extremis and Beyond," fans will argue that it might be too soon to introduce the Extremis storyline.

In the comics, Stark injected his nervous system with a modified techno-organic virus to save his own life after being critically injured during a battle with a nanotech-enhanced foe. This fused Stark's armour to his body, allowing him to store the inner layers of the Iron Man armour in the hollows of his bones as well as control it through direct brain impulses.

The Extremis enhancement has turned Stark into a cyborg and effectively functions like his second skin. It was later stated that the Extremis endowed Stark with a "healing factor," making Stark immune to cancer.

Check out this screen cap shown at 1:23-1:26 on the Iron Man 2 trailer:

Could this be the Extremis Enhance or some other upgrade by Stark? Anyone else notice the metallic colored wires / veins around the arc reactor in his chest?!

Also the trailer began with a circular emblem on the Iron Man chest plate, but at roughly 2:16 into it, Iron Man and War Machine are fighting armored adversaries. The chest plate of the Iron Man suit NOW sports a triangular design:

If you still cant see it, check this bad boy out:

Is it just coincidence that they happen to use a chest design that is iconic of the Extremis armour while also depicting suspiciously metallic or technological veins in Stark's chest? What does everyone else think?

I've not heard anything stating explicitly if Extremis will or will not be in the film. So I'm hopeful that these metallic veins and the chest design are a sign that at some point in the film Stark will fuse the Extremis Enhance with his body. Perhaps not entirely like the comic depicts, but close enough that it fits in with the feel and style that suits the setting established by Favreau.

What do you guys think?

@ wolverine

i never would have thought this was a possibility if you hadn't shown me the pic of the wire looking things around the arc reactor. that IS a pretty interesting coinicidence!

we all know that at some point Stark will be getting an upgrade, and we also know that there is almost NO difference in the look of the old armor, and the upgrade, aside from the circle/triangle shape on the chest. you could be right, man! i don't know if i want Extremis in these movies, but the coincidence is too strong to ignore! my only reason for doubting is that Favreau prides himself on making these movies somewhat realistic...and that might just be a little too over the edge, but who knows?

and btw, i've never seen anyone point out that connection, OR the first pic, so good job, man!

@ multi

its funny, because it doesn't seem like Favreau would do it, but at the same time, Iron Man exists in the same universe as Thor, a living god. so its kinda hard to call. i think it could go either way...i just never really decided if i liked the whole Extremis thing, and if it took me this long to come to no decision then it must not be all that great, lol.

This certainly looks interesting. Maybe they'll incorporate some elements of the extremis story, but leave out the part where the armor is stored inside his bones. Perhaps the nanites only improve his interface with the armor, allowing him to have a faster reaction time than his opponents. Who knows.

Good eye though.

Well from the trailor Tony Stark refuses to turn over the armor suit going. So, w/ the Extremis story it does give him more of a reason why he cannot hand it over.

I don't see a problem with Extremis. Sure it's taking a step away from the 'realism' of Fav's IM movies. But really, he does have to ease people into the Avengers somehow. You're going to have Tony Stark mingling with gods, gamma radiated monsters, giant men, tiny women, and out of time super soldiers. Extremis is probably a good start to getting there.

Ryden
Ryden - 1/22/2010, 1:18 AM
Nah I prefer the armour being just that, ARMOUR, Faverue would constantly talk about how it's the man behind the mask, Tony Stark, that's more important I don't think he'd get rid of that ideology so quickly and make Iron Man a part of Stark. I honestly think that it's a virus. Hammer may have hired Black Cat to poison Stark knowing it would [frick] up his arch-reactor.
Runefyst
Runefyst - 1/22/2010, 1:21 AM
That's a good point too Ryden. I can take or leave Extremis. I'm not gonna be upset if it's there. Not gonna be upset if it's not there.

And you mean Black Widow right? ;)

i think it is just an infection he got because his body rejected the chest plate. just a thought...

it will be a great movie no matter if it is or is not. now we need loiuse letterier to do hulk 2,and the avengers.

Lightdarkness15 - 1/22/2010, 3:28 AM
I think it would be a cool idea, at least if they every do plan to converge with other marvel characters such as in the avengers, there would already be an element something supernatural or whatever you wanna call it. I think it would make the jump from a totally realistic superhero movie to something more fantasy like a lot more reasonable. but who knows just a thought, ill love it either way.

Hmmmmm.. Very good find. I don't mind Extremis armour as long as they introduce it properly. We don't really know the time gap between this film and last so he might have had loads of battles/experience in between.

Why do we have to go on about the EXTREMIS???

Its wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too early for that, hell if they put that in, it'll [frick] the whole film up!!?

IRON MAN 3 (should've been 2), = DEMON IN THE BOTTLE!

Denn1s I believe you are right. I read an article in the Wizard magazine with both Iron Man and War Machine on the cover and in it the article says that he is dealing with some kind of infection for the arc reactor.
Of course this could just be a guess on the part of the magazine as well.
Just thought I would put that out there.

"Extremis" was a great story. It was nuts when Tony had powers. Love the armor.

Extremis is a hell of a great story. I do agree that it's a bit early for it and I also agree that it doesn't seem like Favreau to go that Sci Fi.
BUT way early on someone did in fact say that the IM2 plot was a bold and risky

And I really must say that these pics are very compelling. That chest pic is REAL strange.. And the triangular chest part. The evidence is there.

I love Ironman but never followed the comics back in the day so my question is...if they are keeping in line with the story, how/does the extremis story fit in (timeline specifically) to the merging of the avengers? Not that it would be a big deal as they can do a rollback for the avengers....here's another question..did ironman have the extremis suite while he was with the avengers?

Sorry for my ignorance...been a while since I got into comic storylines, etc..

i don't think thats whiplashes chest mickey is huge these days.

i hear a few people think JF is trying to do to many things in one movie. he did a bang up job with the first movie.
extremis was an excellent story and in parts would be a cool inclusion if done right.

IN JF WE TRUST

I think Hammer will control his armour and make him kill the senator! Then he will have to hand over his armour to the government who will commision Hammer to make war machine and the military bots! But Hammer will make his own Army! This is why Tony has new suit at end of film!

I'm not sure...this movie is already looking pretty crowded with War Machine, Justin Hammer, Whiplash, Nick Fury and Black Widow - adding in the Extremis stroyline might be a bit much!! I have to agree with LEE and teabag thats its a little too early for this anyway!
Wadey09
Wadey09 - 1/22/2010, 7:38 AM
@CDB
yes it is Stark's chest.
what gets me thinking that this isn't Extremis is the fact that Tony doesn't look too happy about his chest.
he looks more concerned that he screwed up his chest.

maybe that will be a sub plot for the film. in later comics, Iron Man's chest wound gets fixed. perhaps that could happen here. or at the end, find out the ARC is killing him and in IM3 lead him to a SERIOUS drinking binge!

any thoughts?

Movies have to live like "Dog years" compaired to comic books. They dont have decades to bring the story to the screen. Normaly you need to get from begining to end in 3 movies.

Almost everything in Iron Man 2 seems like It should be in "Iron Man 3"... War machine, all the drones, possibly the extremis suit...

I think...
That this will be a water down "movie" version of the extremis suit. I bet for the movie this suit is connected to Tonys nervous system and it will give him the edge over all the other suits in the movie.

With all the drones, possibly Crimson Dynamo, and War Machiene...Tony's Iron Man Suit dont stand out. So quick reflexis, almost natural motion will make him stand out while War machine will be a low orbit Tank for the most part. (remember his suit dont have the gold shit so he can go to high altitudes)

Iron Man = F22 fighter
War Machine = Wart Hog Tank smasher.

(sorry for the bad spelling)

to those above who said extremis was to early i agree and they should at least touch up on the demon in a bottle story in the next one.

ps: I don't think they will make it like the comics Extremis suit going into the marrows of his bones. Im betting it will be more of a "Connection" advancement.

I think in today's world this is really the best way to go. people are more willing to accept movie-science doing many more things now-a-days

plus i feel like this adds to him as a super-hero. when you break it down as far as extremis does it truly makes him the iron man
