Rise of the Apes Has a New Title

20th Century Fox will be releasing the prequel/reboot to the Planet of the Apes franchise this August. The film has alternated in title between Caesar, Caesar: Rise of the Apes and just Rise of the Apes. Now there's a slight alteration to the title that would tie it closer to the original film series.

Apparently marketing studies found the best response has been to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which absolutely makes it sound like part of the original cycle of five films.

Rise of POTA stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Andy Serkis and Brian Cox. It's directed by Rupert Wyatt, and offers a look at apes ascension to power in quite a different way from the original, involving genetic experimentation.

Take a look at this trailer for the original film series that was produced for the films' THX remastering on VHS many moons ago.

I liked all the films except for the second one with Franciscus and Burton's terrible remake.

That's a mouth full, way too long. Though I suppose it isn't much longer than "Captain America: The First Avenger". Still anticipating both of those movies, though.

As a PotA fan I approve of this. The Burton remake was meh. Nothing will likely ever top the first film but I will giving this a chance to be good and hopefully fit in with the rest of the films.

ETA @FreshKicks Either watch the movies or read the wiki on them. It sort of explains that.

What was so bad about the Tim Burton POTA? I hear people talk bad about it, but I don't get it. The property itself is already limited; Ape people, ok. How much can you do with that? The Burton film had a plot, good make-up and a balance between comedy and action. For a film about talking Apes, it went above and beyond. What more can be done to this subject matter?

I don't like it, too many "of the's" in the title.

This title feels a bit clunky... I dig "Rise of the Apes" a bit more. Nobody is going to call it "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" when they talk about it. It'll either be called "Planet of the Apes Prequel" or, more likely, "Rise of the Apes." Oh well, I'm not too sure about this movie, but I'll give it a fair shot...

I want this to be good. Seeing as how its one of Fox's only good franchises. And its a great one at that

I actually like the change in title because it ties in to the original franchise while at the same time promising an origin story. By making it Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it also allows it on a merchandise level to tie in to the old films.

The one thing that people have to bear in mind, however, is that it really is a reboot, the "rise" in question being completely separate from the "origin" we know of from the old series. How much the two will tie together remains to be seen.

Is it REALLY that much of a mouthful?

Planet of the Apes
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Escape From the Planet of the Apes
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Battle For the Planet of the Apes
Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I remember once the Marvel black and white magazine had a story called Escape From the Battle For the Conquest Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Now THAT'S a mouthful.

wow I guess some people have never seen a Planet of the Apes movie. Its pretty much keeping faithful to the other titles of the series. But I guess some people would just like it to be called Apes 1, Apes 2, etc. Just shows how far their imagination stretches.

I'll probably check this movie out. Always thought the plots for these kinds of movies were interesting. Also I think James Franco is a pretty good actor, so it'll be cool to see his part in the movie.

I didn't think anything could get worse than slapping "Rises" on the end of the Dark Knight. But this clumsy 'Of the, of the' title is giving it a good run for it's money- winning, actually. Rising and requems and revolutions/evolutions all sound so amateur now. This is something a youtuber would title their fan film. But I like Franco, so I'm interested in how it might be. Walberg was good in the last one too. Maybe they'll make it mean and gritty. Make it scary.
CigBreath
CigBreath - 4/6/2011, 9:15 PM
i like the title change, nice that it fits with the awkward mouthful of all the other titles--maybe it is a good sign that they might take a more bad good comic booky feel like that of the original film-- opposed to the just bad mark wahlberg remake. also, great story, great news find-- this artcle was newsbreaking and is referenced in many articles as CBM breaking the title change story.

@soforizo or
PLANET OF THE APES: THE RISE OF CAESAR

But whatver. If it was called Curious George of the Planet of the Apes: Banana Converter Shit Thrower. People would find a way to justify that as a good title too. So, whatever. I wonder when a trailer is coming.

Bit of a mouthful don't ya think? Souns a bit daft aswell.
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes"; Makes it sound like the film's about the actual planet the film's set on, and nothing to do with any apes or any characters at all for that matter. How does it start? With the formation of the planet? Or will it start like Genesis in the Bible? :D
What's next; Planet of the Apes Returns (the planet went on a holiday and has "returned" to it's place in the solar system).
