POTA - Betrayal 3
BOOM! Studios, armed with the dual success of their own recently launched Planet of the Apes comic and the success of Rise, have announced a new four-issue comic miniseries that starts in November called Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes. Comic Book Resources caught up with the husband and wife writing team of Gabriel Hardman (who is also providing the art) and Corinne Sara Bechko to discuss Betrayal. What follows is an excerpt from that interview. For the full interview, click HERE.
COMIC BOOK RESOURCES: As you've mentioned, your miniseries is set just before the first film. What made you want to tackle this era?
HARDMAN: When we first pitched the story, we assumed it would need to be set at the same time as the ongoing. The one big note that came back on our pitch was to set it in the classic movie era and include characters like Dr. Zaius. We didn't need a lot of convincing to make the change. Honestly, we were thrilled. It made perfect sense for our story and I couldn't be any more excited to work with the iconic elements of the films.
BECHKO: Truly, it was serendipity.
COMIC BOOK RESOURCES: What storytelling opportunities does this particular moment in time allow?
BECHKO: As I said before, I love the character of Dr. Zaius. The first film makes it clear that ape society was in a state of flux even before Taylor's crew landed. We now have the opportunity to explore that a little bit, and to see Dr. Zaius as a younger ape in a changing world.
HARDMAN: We also have the chance to expand the world of the original movies, introducing new locations and characters. That said, we are hyper-aware of keeping these new elements true to the feel of PotA. I've always been disappointed by licensed books that aren't able to capture the tone of the originals. We're doing everything in our power to make sure that doesn't happen here.

POTA - Betrayal 4
COMIC BOOK RESOURCES: What can you tell us about the story of "Betrayal?"
HARDMAN: At heart, "Betrayal" is a political thriller with a heavy dose of action and adventure. In our story, a former Gorilla General, a war hero, is accused of a crime from his days in the military. He finds himself on the run, imprisoned and fighting for his life. When he uncovers a plot to bring down the government, his only ally may be the newest council member: Dr. Zaius.
BECHKO: I think it's safe to say that you'll see some facets of ape society you've never seen before. Sure, the law says that Ape Does Not Kill Ape. But what happens when one does? The death penalty is certainly out of the question. And exactly how do humans fit into Ape City? We see them as complete outcasts in the first film, but their relationship to the apes is obviously more complicated than that.
COMIC BOOK RESOURCES: Who is this Gorilla General, and what is he up against?
BECHKO: We're introducing a new character, General Aleron, a gorilla war hero who now lives as a civilian. Dr. Zaius is in the mix too, as a freshly minted council member who's still trying to define his moral compass.
HARDMAN: We also have a "domesticated" human and a sympathetic chimpanzee scientist. They all get sucked into a conspiracy that could transform Ape City.

I loved it, too many people came out of the cinema i work at trying to find the connection to Tim Burton's film though :/

I think it's exceeded everybody's expectations, and it really does stand as a primary example of how to reboot an old franchise.

Connection to Burton's version? Absolutely none!

@Niuhll, I heard so many people try to connect the two as well... Its sad. Especially when you stop and explain to them that there is no connection to Burtons movie, and they dont understand haha. This was by far the best movie I watched this year, very enjoyable.

Yea, also you can't really judge movies by trailers these days either can you. All that coverage on sites like this and still better than expected.

@Rabb1t exactly, i just tell people to whitewash over Burton's and allow this to start from scratch, i can see this becoming a very popular franchise, especially if Wyatt stays at the helm.

@Niuhll, My thoughts exactly.

@eyesore there was loads of little nods to the originals, i only noticed a couple, like the statue of liberty toy he had and the Icarus space craft.

yeah, you're right, but they were subtle nods. still they can go pretty much wherever they want with this franchise.

Of course, i hope they do. They should link them to the originals, but theres no rush, they have what from 2011 to nearly 4000A.D to explore before the original film lol. Might aswell make the most of it.

God this movie was fantastic and I was so happy to hear that it had nothing to do with Burton's horrible take on the Apes series.

Burton's version was good to me. They made about 362 million. I was hoping for a sequel. The new version was outstanding. Great movie. Looking forward to the next one.

This was the best movie I've seen all year. I look forward to future installations. Especially if they follow through with their idea to make the next one the all out war against what's left of the human race.

I couldn't tell the difference between the Orangutan pre-smart gas, and post smar gas though. I just thought he was awesome all the time.

@clark it was clumsy and lacklustre, and it made very little sense. It was all style over substance, and this new film has blown that out of the water on every single level.

The first trilogy could be the "Caesar Saga".

This movie was not connected to either of the previous franchises was it? It is a total reboot.

It definitely wasn't connected to Burton's because it took place on Earth. And it wasn't connected to the Heston movies because humanity is going to be wiped out by the virus, not a nuclear war.

Way better than I expected. Looked like a mediocre sci-fi cash grab with a familair title. Almost didn't go see it but I was bored. I was amused by it.

See my review.
WalkingPhoenix
WalkingPhoenix - 8/21/2011, 11:14 PM
It didnt have a direct tie-in with Burton's film, but it did have a connection to the storyline in 1 part. I cant remember the name of the shuttle mission to space during the film, but I almost am possitive it's the same name of Mark Wahlberg's shuttle mission in Burton's film. And it also makes a note in this film of how the mission has become lost in space. It's this time warp space travel that causes Wahlberg not to age but the Earth he returns to is years into the future.

This movie leads into the destruction of the human race by the virus they created that the Apes are immune to. The Apes really wont even have to fight that much in the next movie, if they decide to continue the storyline of these characters. Why else would they show so much emphasis on the pilot neighbor that got sneezed on by the dude that died?

It's such a great and actually more scary take on how the humans own creation ends up being their demise other than the old played out nucular bombs. man-made viruses like the AIDS virus humans created, tested in monkeys, monkeys become immune but Eazy-E dies! 12-Monkeys movie recreated!!! Brilliant!
