Peter Jackson Filming The Hobbit Entirely In 3D!

Peter Jackson will use the EPIC Camera from RED brand Cameras to film his two part Lord Of The Rings prequel, The Hobbit entirely in 3D...

When original director Guillermo Del Toro was still attached to direct the two Lord Of The Rings prequels The Hobbit, it was said that both films would be 2D only. Then Del Toro's departure plus several other problems led to The Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson taking over directing duties for the films.

Now it appears that Jackson, who is a long time supporter of the RED Camera, will use the EPIC camera(the predecessor to the RED model) to film the two Hobbit movies entirely in 3D. The Hobbit will be one of the first to use the EPIC, Which they have ordered thirty of. Jackson has used the RED camera on projects such as his short film Crossing the Line. Here is what Jackson had to say about the Cameras:

"I have always liked the look of Red footage. I'm not a scientist or mathematician, but the image Red produces has a much more filmic feel than most of the other digital formats. I find the picture quality appealing and attractive, and with the Epic, Jim and his team have gone even further. It is a fantastic tool, the Epic not only has cutting edge technology, incredible resolution and visual quality, but it is also a very practical tool for film makers. Many competing digital systems require the cameras to be tethered to large cumbersome VTR machines. The Epic gives us back the ability to be totally cable free, even when working in stereo."

Jim Jannard the owner and founder of RED also had this to say about Jackson's choice to use their camera:

"Everybody at RED is incredibly proud that Peter has chosen the Epic. The Hobbit is a major production, and could have chosen any camera system that they wanted. The fact that they went with us is extremely gratifying."

The Hobbit is expected to start filming back to back some time next year with a 2012 release expected for part one and 2013 release for part two. The Hobbit movies will be directed by Peter Jackson. The Hobbit will star Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Rob Kazinsky, Aidan Turner, Graham McTavish, John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, James Nesbitt, and Adam Brown

Starting to appear that all the hardship this flic has endured thus far will pay off in the end to give us another Epic feature in Middle Earth from Peter Jackson. This is a production I think everyone here can get behind.

Craptastic; I despise this whole "3D revolution". Just makes me pay more $ and leave the theatre with a head-ache

I'll watch them both in 2D.I don't like the way that 3D forces you to look where they want you to look, as it messes with my eyes if I want to let them wander around the frame a bit. It's too distracting too.I find myself sat thinking 'Ooo thats cool!' instead of paying attention to the story.

I think if anyone could make 3D look good, it's Jackson and the team from WETA.

I never had any interest in these movies but I was bored the other night and the fellowship came on so I started watching and I couldn't believe how great it was.

I watched the other two movies the next day and now I can't wait for this one. I just wish Viggo was in it, that guy is so amazing.

@ckal: my bad thanks for catching that also yes the film should be available in 2D also I think the the cameras just make the process of going to 3D easier but I also have no clue what I am talking about so I could be wrong.

Theres nothing wrong with 3d People only get on here to Complain about 3d films then rush out to see things in 3d.

Most people who say 3d sucks are hypocrites I happen to like 3d films there fun, Resident Evil after life Looked amazing in 3d, even the animated film How to Train your dragon was great.

3D is here get over it soon its gonna be in millions of homes and in the palm of your hands so people need to stop complaining, if a Film is Shot in 3d it will look pretty good so Complainers just shut up already

On a side note - HOLY @#$! has Jackson lost a TON of weight! I want his diet plan!!!

I hope to God that this thing will also be released in 2D. I despise 3D and refuse to see any movie in that format.

Much like Avatar, I'm cool with this in 3D and think that Mr. Jackson is the perfect director to pull it off. I agree, most 3D is overrated and underwhelming but I have faith in the almighty PJ!!!
