Isn't it time that Superman got rid of the red trunks?

Can we finally see our favorite kryptonian looking like an adult without the underwear over his pants? please!

Since Chris Nolan is producing the new Superman movie I'm in high hopes that it will be a little more realistic. Well as realistic as an alien raised on earth to be our greatest hero could be; But it's just one thing that's nagging me, It's those damn underwear!! I don't blame any of the directors, producers, or even costume designers for sticking to the same old costume, beacuse they're scared. They're scared of backlash from loyal superman fans who don't want anyone to tamper with they're icon. We have to let them know it's ok for small changes.

This image that we grew up with is outdated and just doesn't work on film. It's hard to think of a superhero who actually sticks to this formula on film. No live action adaptaion since the old Adam west Batman has had a superhero with underwear over his pants but superman and Tim Burton had the brilliant idea to get rid of em. I for one would accept and like the change as i think most of you would.

So please for the next Superman film more action, more easter eggs, less baby mama, less illegitament kids, and absoutely no red undies over his pants.

It's ok don't be scared of change.

FIST!!! Wow, The thought has occurred to me before but never actually went as far as exploring options. I like the last design you put up and I think it could actually work!

They should lose the trunks for smallville but thats the only adaptation where it could be acceptable

Jp499 - are you saying you are not ready to part ways with the outerwear for good? Cause I sure as hell am! It does look outdated and if it's the only change, it prob won't be such an uproar to all of the fans. Well, IMO at least ...

I'm not exactly sure of what the answer would be, but I think it's time to switch things up. They started to with "Superman Returns" but I don't think they went far enough. I say go for it.

YES!!! superman costume upgrade!!! PLEEEEEASE!!!! no male character should be wearing tights except for spider-man!

i think a mix between all three of those supes pics would work. i don't like the giant "S" connecting to the cape but everything else is great! give him actual GEAR instead of a costume. people don't fight in costumes. they fight in tactical gear. just look at the ultimates version of cap. the coipel version of Thor. the movie version of batman - all better than the original 100%
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 4/8/2010, 6:53 PM
also gotta get rid of the whole unitard look. make it two separate pieces - pants and a shirt. with boots and a cape too so i guess four pieces.

as long as the color scheme is right and the "S" is there - fans won't care.

My dad used to always laugh at me for being a fan of a guy who always wore his underwear outside his trousers and I could totaly get behind a new costume upgrade to Supes! In fact I have a new design in the works for a new costume that I plan on making after the others i have in the pipeline.

If that didn't make sense i apologise, slightly too many beers! :D

Umm im not the biggest fan if superman espcially since im a huge fan of Batman and we all know Batman can beat the crap out of Superman. This said Superman is not Superman without his red undies and personally I wouldnt like the change. There is nothing realistic about Superman so why even bother changing anything to be realistic... Doesnt make sense.

@Venom, This article may talk about the new superman film being more 'realistic' but I still think a new underwearfree supes would work well even if the film and superman as an entity are not.

@Venom-- So, what you're saying is that Superman's power isn't dependant on the yellow sun, but instead, his red skivvies? Interesting...

I don't know. The outfit just doesn't seem complete without the red underwear.

I never had a problem with the undies. Superman is one of the earliest superheroes ever made. His outfit represents a classic superhero look that has been widely recognized for years. I think it'd be pretty low to change it so significantly, just to try to appeal to a modern audience.

Perhaps some tweaking to the costume to give it a real world look to it (as seen in Spider-Man or Fantastic Four), but nothing too drastic.

I see your point, and of course it is important to update these things. I also really like the last pic.

But Batman's costume has always changed from welcome change (yay- all black in Burton), to grey and blue, new-look, back to basic with the modern era, and even nipples (boo Schumacher!).

Superman's costume may change but its always short-lived. And the changes are always met with disdain- I hated the tiny symbol on Brandon Routh's costume and the shade of red they used.

Superman is iconic. To mess with the image of an icon, that classic look is a bad idea: it is unnerving to an extent, even if logicically it makes more sense for it to be updated. Yes, there are always exceptions but Superman himself is almost an excpetion. Superman is THE archetypal superhero, THE image from which all other superheroes are patterened after

I wish it was socially acceptable to wear underwear outside of my pants. I am going to start a trend.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/9/2010, 6:49 AM
the underwear on the outside of the costume look is very ridiculous. so much so, that MOST characters in the comics that USED to have those, don't anymore. look at the x-men. wolverine and cyclops have both started wearing their underwear, UNDER their costumes in more recent years...because it just looks stupid. comic artists and writers have been able to see this, why can't others?? its an outdated look, and MOST of Marvel's characters have done away with it.

however, Superman is one of those characters that will have fans riot if ANY changes are made to the costume. Superman returns is the perfect example. people actually complained about his costume...and why?? it looks the same, with very MINOR differences...yet when most people complain about Superman Returns, the costume changes are ALWAYS brought up.

so, i agree, do away with the outside underwear. i don't want any other changes to the costume, because Superman is THE most iconic look in comics. but getting rid of the underwear would be fine. unfortunately, some people just can't let go of something so ridiculous looking...

@ odin

"as long as the color scheme is right and the "S" is there - fans won't care."

sorry buddy, but i gotta disagree. Superman's costume has been changed countless times, and even when its minor, people whine and complain. unfortunately, he's just one of those characters that can't be changed without pissing people off.

like spidey. his classic costume will always be his main costume. even though there have been many cooler looking versions, like his House of M costume...

Sure it'll take people time to adjust to the change but they will accept it, some will love it. img src="http://www.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/gallerypictures/10178L.jpg" />

Man i wish i could see your designs :(

And everybody loved the eradicator's outfit even with those thick ass yellow glasses on so i don't see taking away the panties as a problem. The only thing is, don't just take away the panties and leave him with a blue body suit. It'll look like he's wearing jammies. There are several artists that have come up with alternate uniforms and they're cool! I especially like ValerysGhost's "Steampunk" Superman costume, it rocked!!!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/9/2010, 9:32 AM
@ Shaman

people loved the Eradicator's outfit because they knew he wasn't Superman. its been proven time and again, that anytime Superman's costume gets changed, the fans complain about it, and demand the old costume back. its just the way it goes. its unfortunate, but its the truth.

again, look at Superman Returns. it had TINY changes, i mean MINISCULE changes, and its still one of the things that a LOT of people say was wrong with the movie.

i don't agree with this way of thinking, but its just been proven that people will cry over any little change to Supes' costume...

Yeah Corndog I was a fan of that one and the Ben Riley one too, not the Scarlet Spider but the other where he had the webshooters on the outside. Also Alex Ross' was pretty sweet.

Personally I'd be down with an updated Superman threads like posted in the article. So many changes that could be made that would keep him relatively similar to the comic version but just make his suit more modern. The thing is, his design is a classic and iconic, making any change almost impossible.

CDB@ i guess i just don't really care what thos fans think then lol.

if you can't let it go then go watch the Donner movies in bliss and let us folks that live in 2010 enjoy a more modern, realistic looking superman who's sound-minded enough to put on his underwear first.

some of the costumes that have been used WERE really stupid. but if you just make it more realistic looking that's all we need. and with Nolan at the helm im not worried. he's a smart man and won't rush this sort of thing.

p.s. "wolverine and cyclops have both started wearing their underwear, UNDER their costumes in more recent years.." - hilarious.

necrosage@ putting armor on Thor worked! and he's a GOD!

and i don't get why people didn't like the SR costume? i never heard much gripe. the only thing that's different is the "S" is a little smaller which i don't know why that would bother anyone the rest was spot on.

anyone on this who is wanting to lose the red are not superman fans. it is unreal anyone who would do that would call themselves a superman fan. superman isnt going to wear a white t and jeans. hes superman. he wears blue and red tights. batman begins and TDK lost the tights because in theyre realisic story, batman needs a tough suit to live. superman doesnt need bulky armor or a damn upgrade. its iconic. he wears what he wants to wear. he can wear wahtever he wants because hes freaking indesctructable. you people make me sick.

I am fine without the underwear. It just looked out of place when you have superman in a modern setting zooming around in an external underwear.

I mean if someone you see on tv was wearing his underwear outside how would you react?

Superman8, pull up your skirt Alice, Superman is not a real person. "he wears what he wants to wear. he can wear wahtever he wants..." Yeah he wears whatever the writer and artist puts on paper. You say that the Batman threads in DK were fine because it was a realistic setting. What do you call every single Superman movie that has come out? Overly exaggerated? Hell no! They went for realism. Well except that whole spinning the Earth in the opposite direction and turning back time, I know the old school movies are iconic but man did it have some suck moments.

Oh yeah it's cool to change Superman...While we're at it why don't we put MSG in Mom's Apple pie, let's put instant replay in baseball, and f*ck it, let's paint the American Flag orange, pink, and purple.

I'm not an advocate of altering American icons because it's cool. If Superman's costume is good enough for my Grandfather, my dad, me, and my 4 year nephew it's good enough for you...grrrr

McLovin
McLovin - 4/9/2010, 12:47 PM
Layperson and Superman8 - I'm sure there is a place were the two of you can finger pop each other while talking about how nice Superman's bulge looks in those ridiculous red trunks.

Not for nothing, but people who are scared of change are what gets in the way of progress. Can you imagine if the Wright brothers or Henry Ford thought that the train was a fine method of transport?

Look at the designs on the article and tell me that those would not be an improvement?

OdinsBeard - I love your idea! We totally should have an artist contest for new duds for the Man of Steel!!!

CDB - You crack me up dude!

In the late 80's/early 90's run of the JLA, the artist drew Batman with no outside trunks...just streamlined streamlined...as if he were wearing a body stocking...with the utility belt resting on his hips...that's what they should do with Superman...just take the shorts off and make it streamlined blue (put some type of red design on the hip if it makes the hard cores happy...) with the yellow belt on his hips...to me, whenever they do some type of incarnation of that, he looks a lot more like the Kryptonian he's supposed to be...
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 4/9/2010, 12:53 PM
@ layperson

lol, jesus. i never said it wasn't good enough for me the way it is. but if they changed it, it wouldn't exactly be the end of my world. it wouldn't have the same ramifications as changing the colors of the American flag, or putting MSG in my mom's apple pie. and by the way, instant replay has been in Baseball for years, lol.

and do you really think underwear on the outside of his costume is cool?? would you really be mad if they did away with that??
