Top 10 WTF Moments in Comics

Top 10 WTF Moments in Comics

Thank God the Internet invented WTF to encapsulate our thoughts.

WTF. It's a term that's come into the human lexicon not only in online chats, but IRL as well. Which I'm fine with. WTF is a censor friendly way of airing your utter confusion, disgust, or annoyance with a given subject, and plus it's kind of funny to boot.

As comic readers, there's undoubtedly many times where we've been reading a book only to come across a moment and think: WTF? It could be a moment of awe-inspiring shock value, or just a plain old moment of disdain. Either way, these are the top 10 WTF moments in comic books.

10. Elektra is a Skrull! WTF!

At the time, the reveal of the Skrull invasion was exciting. Retrospectively, after Secret Invasion turned out to be a complete and utter shitfest, it's just rather bizarre. However, when New Avengers #31 released and fanboys across the world realized they'd been duped, we reacted with suprise, shock and ridiculous speculation. So much for that.

9. The GD Batman!

Frank Miller and Jim Lee's still unfinished All-Star Batman & Robin incited more WTFs than any other series in recent memory. Most notably, Batman's outright mean persona and his constant claiming that he's "the Goddamn Batman!" Despite the confusion it inspired, it was hilarious.

WTF, until you realized it was a joke and meant to be tongue in cheek. I just hope that someday we get to see the final issues. I'm not holding my breath.

8. Dr. Light is a Little More Dangerous Than Previously Thought...

Dr. Light, a classic C-List Teen Titans villain raped the wife of The Elongated Man. And then the Justice League voted to alter his mind via Zatanna to make him less formidable. And THEN Batman found out and the League wiped his mind too. WTF.

The best implosion of a team ever, Identity Crisis tore apart the DCU like no other story had ever done, not even Blackest Night. And it all started with the vile actions of a villain who, for so long, was a laughing stock of the superhero community.

7. Out With the Silver Age

I'm not sure there was any more definitive moment of the death of the Silver Age than Crisis on Infinite Earths. Sure, comics had taken on a darker tone in the 1970's, but it was cemented in stone with the death of two long standing Silver Age characters, the original Supergirl and the Barry Allen Flash.
Seeing that cover with Superman holding his dead cousin was a definitive moment for many readers in the 1980's, and the iconic image has lived on in true WTF fashion.

6. Frank Castle & Archie Hate Drug Dealers

I don't think a whole lot of explanation is needed here. Anti-hero violence enthusiast teams up with the classic (children's) comic strip star, hunting down a drug dealer at Riverdale High School. I can't express to you how badly you need to read this story.

5. Big Barda Does Apokolips

I guess if you are John Byrne, kidnapping the New God Big Barda and forcing her to make porno movies on Apokolips - with Superman - to get at her husband Mister Miracle, is the obvious route to take. To everyone else on the planet Earth, Action Comics #593 garnered a big fat "WTF", before the term even existed.

Byrne has denied that the video tape given to Mister Miracle starring his wife was, in fact, NOT a porn film. However, the fact that the supervillain that orchestrates the whole scenario is named Sleez combined with the panel that shows Barda in a bra and panties, sort of says otherwise.
John Byrne: you are a pervy douche. Also, on an unrelated note, your "birthing matrix" idea was stupid.

4. Marvel Artists Leave and Found Image Comics

In the early 1990's, the comics industry experienced a giant boom in popularity and sales, and several artists that were at the forefront of Marvel's creative output - Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefield, Marc Silvestri, among others - were fed up with the inner workings of the publishing giant. Not having any rights or control over the characters they created, several of these artists announced their exit from the company to form Image Comics, where creators would retain all rights to their work.

It got a gasp and a WTF for sure, leaving behind the money and success of the big Marvel titles, but in the end it was a good move for all involved, and more importantly - the industry as a whole.

3. Spider-Man Gets a Brand New Day

I get it. I've beat this into the ground. That doesn't make it any less f*cking ridiculous. Fanboys uttered a resounding (and quite angry) WTF when they learned that a lot of the Spider-Man continuity for the better part of 20 years was being tossed out the window in an effort to bring the character some youthful edge. Or, as I like to call it, "youth-anize" the character. Get it? Euthanize?

2. Doctor Doom Cries on 9/11

Yes, 9/11 is a sore subject with many people. It's tread on lightly, even today. In an effort of "tribute", Marvel released some 9/11 tie-ins, as it were, showing the heroes helping out on that terrible day and the effect it had on the Marvel characters. It portrayed them as helpless and human, just like most people were feeling that day. It was a valiant effort by all involved, except for one moment in Amazing Spider-Man #36.
Doctor Doom, seeing the destruction of the World Trade Center, sheds tears. The man who has tried to either take over or destroy the world HUNDREDS OF TIMES, is an evil dictator of a European country similar to Hitler, murderer of an uncountable number of "random innocents", is... sad? WTF?

This isn't a debate of the importance of Doom's character over real life tragedy; that is irrelevant. There is no denying which is the more important issue here. But not only was this moment out of character and utterly wrong for Doom, but it added an unintended degree of melodrama to the whole issue that made something that could've been a defining moment for Marvel into something rather hokey.

1. Red/Blue Superman

In 1998, DC made the mother of all WTF decisions when they opted to change the character of Superman. This character that had stood for 60 years, and had just been killed off a few years prior to show his utter importance not only to comics but to the world, was out the door.

Splitting him into two different personalities (Red & Blue) with electricity based powers was all around a mind numbing idea. So mind numbing in fact, that the explanation to get him back to normal was quite vague, probably a result of the severe backlash of comic book fans and their desire to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

A change of costume or marriage status is one thing, but completely altering everything that established the character as an American icon in the first place is something else entirely.

W.T.F.

Well, I enjoyed One More Day/Brand New Day.I really dislike the character of Mary Jane and haven't missed her presence in the books.I like Peter as a carefree character, not with some nagging wife. His stories are fun again.Brand New Day took the series back to what made it popular.

i'm surprised the death of Captain America isn't up there. there was a lot of talk that he might die in the last issue of Civil War, but when the last issue came out, and he was still alive, i think it was a HUGE surprise that he got killed in the very next issue of Captain America. i don't think many people expected that.

but Marvel did an awesome job of keeping that under wraps. i remember walking into my shop that day, and EVERYONE'S jaws were on the floor. my comic shop owner was pissed because he didn't order more issues, that junk sold out before noon that day, he would have made a killing...as would ANY retailer...

also, Kraven blowing his brains out in Kraven's Last Hunt was a pretty big WTF moment for me!

wow - what blantant plagarism.

craveonline.com posted this editorial on march 26th. 3 days before this one. this is a word for word - picture for picture- rip off of someone else's work.

good to know CBM.com condones stealing others' work. i went up an down this page looking for the citation and im not seeing it anywhere. all it says it 'wpt' out as if wpt himself wrote it.

plagarism.

OdinsBeard is right. The only difference between this article and the one on crave is the first picture.

WTF!

Maybe wolverinept is the author of the article on Crave, Joey Esposito.

Or maybe not... see for yourselves...

i didn't see that. yeah, thats pretty irritating when people do that.

@ Venom,

Wolvie could've at least stated that "I found this article on crave, and wanted to share it", or something to that effect.
Ven0m
Ven0m - 3/29/2010, 8:46 AM
@ El Bicho true I guess that would take confusion out of the way. I dont know what his intention is I can only assume. Maybe he figured with the source link it was a given. Im giving him the benefit of the doubt not jumping down his throat like Odin.
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 3/29/2010, 9:10 AM
VenomZero@ ok i see that. i always forget that there are links there. but the entire time i feel like pt is trying to pass these off as his own thoughts. no where does he say: i found this at another site and i thought i'd share with you guys - which would have been fine. the whole time it's "i fell like this", "i think that". when in fact in was someone else thinking it.

wolverine - no where did you say it was wirtten by you?? your name is at the top and at the bottom twice and the whole time it says "i" "me"- do you know what putting your name on an article means? - plus no where does it say it wasn't wirtten by you either - just a link way past the article. even after you signed your name. it says "WPT out" to me that's the end of the article. a simple link at the bottom - without saying whats on it or why you put it there isn't really giving the proper person credit. your name is all over this page and all you did was credit the parent site of the original post - no author or anything. but at least it's up now. i guess that's something.

I had no idea about Byrne trying to make a Supes/Barda porno. That's pretty danged messed up. I agree though that there are more messed up, WTF things like Cyborg Superman and Mongul destroying Coast City. The Spider-Man Clone Saga was worse for me than BND. I think if they were going to compile a list, it would have to be much larger than a top 10.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/29/2010, 9:34 AM
@ wolverine

i'm not bad mouthing you, lol. i never said you were plagiarising. i saw the link from somewhere else. i just think a little originality would've been better. every time i post an article, i paraphrase it in my own words...IF its news from something else. if its an editorial, then in all honesty, i would have just come up with my list of WTF moments.

but yeah, man, no bad mouthing, here. just copy/pasting is never as good, or respected as creating something on your own, thats all.
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 3/29/2010, 9:41 AM
Wolverinept@ Apologies man. yes i could've done that - tho i would prefer not to call you a douche. even tho i sort of flamed you there i refrained form calling you names because, well that's pretty [frick]ing stupid over the internet.

can i blame on it me being super tired? i was just perusing the web for my morning news and came across this and in my tired/depressed-cuz-i-gotta-go-to-work-soon state i felt compelled to say something.

you gotta keep in mind i don't really know you and someone posting something that isn't there's isn't above some people. but to be honest as soon as i posted that first comment i was like - "you know what i see wpt on here all the time and agree with him alot so im sure next time i try to converse with him he's going to remember i was a jerk to him"

im actually totally fine with people putting stuff from other sites on here - it makes it so i don't have to go other places and most of those places don't have as good, if any, comments section. i just usually see a "i found this here and wanted to share"

you're right man MISLEAD was the word i should've used.
Ven0m
Ven0m - 3/29/2010, 9:41 AM
@ Odin I see your point. No harm no foul guys its all dust in the wind.
OdinsBeard
OdinsBeard - 3/29/2010, 9:57 AM
wpt@

haha i can live with that. nothing but love all around.

i gotta follow my little online resolution i gave myself and that's to try to be more positive in comments posts. cuz why talk about shit you hate.

what i thought was a blatant attempt to look cool was just an honest mistake - one that wasn't really made as bad as i thought cuz you linked it up there at the bottom.

see ya at the next one WPT!

FIRST..Brand New Day..IS and WAS AWESOME!! If you don't like the really really good NEW but not new take on
my favorite wall crawler DON'T READ IT..or maybe you don't get get it..either way change is good and most SPIDEY fans jumped on board reluctently and finally won over! BND IS EPIC we get SPIDEY 3 times a month!!

second- SECRET INVATION was AWESOME! this whole
time heroes we thought were human..turned out
to be SKRULLS!..How is that not awesome?
MARVEL tricked US..and I say THANK YOU MARVEL!

OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 3/29/2010, 1:01 PM
Yea this list is missing many, many WTF moments. Of the top of my head: the ENTIRE Morrison run on Batman (Bruce and Talia have a killer son. WTF?) for instance. Don't get me wrong, for the most part its cool just WTF.

@dellamorte: I actually thought McDuffie's run on JLA was real good. I liked how he brought in his characters. I think the DCU really needs to get bigger, which is the only thing I think Marvel has on them.
Makiveli21
Makiveli21 - 3/29/2010, 1:11 PM
how about peter parker is the clone and ben reilly is the original, followed by two years of ben wearing the webs and pete living in portland. that was definitley a "wtf"?!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/29/2010, 1:42 PM
@ makiveli

yeah dude, that was terrible. on the same level as OMD.

@ peterparker

i think more people were mad about One More Day. BND might be good, but One More Day was just a bad call. JMS had it written one way, and then Quesada made him do the whole magic thing. i believe Quesada was quoted as saying, "its magic, it doesn't have to be explained." well sorry, Mr Quesada, i like you as EIC, but thats just insulting.

and secret invasion was not awesome. it was a very cool concept, and you're right, it was awesome trying to guess who were Skrulls. which is why the lead in was awesome, but the actual Secret Invasion series itself sucked...very badly.

JYCowboy
JYCowboy - 3/29/2010, 1:45 PM
@OmegaBlack13

If you had read the "Demon" Graphic Novels, I think there are 3, you would know when Damion was concieved... 20 years ago. Those books were drawn by Neal Adams initially.

Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon and Birth of the Demon are the ones I can name.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 3/29/2010, 1:47 PM
How about the New New Avengers. thats a HUGE WTF moment!!

so marvel decides to reboot the whole line of Avengers titles. Avengers: Initiative becomes, Avengers Academy. a series about young super heroes training to become the next generation of Avengers...where have i seen that before? OH YEAH! its exactly the same as Avengers Initiative...only with lame characters.

then New Avengers becomes...NEW AVENGERS!!!! and not only that, but its the same core members, Spidey, Wolvie, Cage, and then Jewel, and Ben Grimm...WTF???? LOL, those are NOT avengers. i'm sorry. this one is just a reason for Marvel to make more money by coming out with the same exact thing but stamping a nice shiney #1 on the cover.

Secret Avengers should have just been what they renamed New Avengers. it would have made a whole lot more sense.

So unless the actual Avengers title has some good characters, i'm jumping the Avengers ship, because WTF!!!

InstigatorGIRL
InstigatorGIRL - 3/29/2010, 2:17 PM
Hmmm. I must say I figured that Jason Todd being alive and now a villian would've been on the WTF list. Also death of Superman and of course, Bruce Wayne being killed off. Also Martian Manhunter being killed and Supergirl being reimagined for, what, the 5th time is on my WTF list.
Shadowelfz
Shadowelfz - 3/29/2010, 2:29 PM
Great list.

I would have put doom crying as number one because its a complete bastardization of his character for the sake of being PC. Also, as stated above, the Ben Reilly thing... made me stop reading spiderman comics. BND didnt help.
