Updated: SPOILER / RUMOR!

A rumor that Trek came to Brazil from a very reliable source reveals that the villains of the new film will actually ... ... ... Klingons and we will not have time travel.
Google Translated

Of course take it with a grain of salt and yada yada. But let's look at this for a second. J.J. Abrams said in past interview that he had the Klingons making an appearance in his first movie, but had to cut it. If he had the itch then, than it makes sense that he'd dip back into the well and give us his take on the race.

The Klingons are have gone through a lot of different variations. Originally just bronze colored villains in the original television show, to making the transformation into ridged foreheaded alien looking creatures. The warrior race has also gone from being an allegory on the Russians during the cold war, to being more of a noble group of warriors with like the Japanese Samurai. More importantly they went from villains to becoming allies, but in the current Abram's timeline they would be villains.

The Klingons are definitly the villains that the most amount of people know about. I think that it would make sense to use them, after the critical success of the first film, to bring in truck loads of people.

@georgia49th I totally agree. There is so much they can use from the original series, no need to go in to TNG.

Species 8472, the coolest villains in the Star Trek universe. Bring them on instead of the overrated Klingons.

The Borg should definitely not be a part of any missions featuring Kirk's crew. I know it's an altered timeline, but that would be too much. The Federation weren't ready for the Borg 100 years after Kirk; they only met them because of Q's interference.

makes sense for the klingons, need to have interaction with them before the treaty is signed and they are allies of the federation. i love the klingons in the trek universe, will be hard to see them as villians but i think i can cope:) I think i remember them mentioning that Nero destroyed like 17 klingon ships in the years between them arriving and Spock arriving in the past, so that will be interesting to see what effect it has on the new timeline, they might become allies sooner or the federation may never help the klingons when praxxis blows up which leads to the Khitomer Accords. Really looking forward to this movie and finding out more of how the new timeline is different.

They were cut from the first film so it wouldn't suprise me if they ended being the villains. I'd be content.....I really love this new Trek franchise and where it's headed. Chris Pine was great as Kirk and it's safe to say the rest of the cast was spot on as well. How about Brian Coxx as a Klingon!?!
WellDrawn
WellDrawn - 10/30/2011, 8:18 PM
The first was great but still had plenty of flaws - The storyline relied much to heavily on coincidences (Kirk just happening to be on the same planet, in the same cave, as old Spock)
Red Matter/Enterprise able to escape from a f'ing black hole?! dumb
And Leanord Nemoy's loose dentures interfering with his speeches.

@WellDrawn- Sometimes coincidences are more interesting than everything being "meaningful." As a side note, I getting kind of tired of the word I just placed into quotation marks.

There is no story they could conjure up (despite what they may say) that could ever top the best of TOS or TNG.

Reinvention is futile.

HD/BluRay TNG is on the way. All is good.

Did anybody notice the lack of reaction among the Enterprise crew in the 2009 film to the fact that that the Romulans are a Vulcan offshoot race.A fact the Vulcans themselves kept under wraps? In the original timeline,it was revealed that during the Romulan war, the warring sides never laid eyes on each other in person and the peace treaty was worked out over subspace radio. In fact, it was Kirks crew that saw a Romulan's appearence for the first time on a Federation viewscreen and the first reaction was astonishment that they resembled Vulcans.

I wonder if they will have already found a cure for the augment gene and have ridged foreheads again in this timeline, or if it will show them finding the cure.

@blkyank Maybe because they look just like Vulcans. Granted, some of them have v-shaped forehead bones (and probably wear helmets to disguise them,) but these guys don't seem to have anything out of the ordinary about them (apart from the tattoos.)

I hope the movie explains why the klingons appearance changes so drastically between the time of kirk to the time of picard.

I'm happy about this because i absolutely HATE the borg. The borg are almost as bad as The Flood in Halo. They are just annoying and almost ruin a perfect mythology.
Phlegmbot
Phlegmbot - 10/31/2011, 1:56 AM
@Spiderneil: That was explained in DS9: In the DS9 episode where they travel to "The Trouble with Tribbles," one of the characters asked Worf about it, and he said something akin to "It was a bad time for us." Somewhere else in the Next Gen universe I think they refer to that appearance (the Kirk-era appearance that is) of the Klingons as some kind of disease.

But that's all I recall.

Captain Stubbing from theLove boat was fine on the small screen but the next generation movies were weak at best unfortunately. Kirk was far better in a combat situation. Picard was more a diplomat captain.

The thing that bugs me about Star Trek races is so many of them only have one focus. Klingons are ALL warriors, Ferrengi are ALL weasily businessmen, Vulcans are ALL logical/non emotional. Apparently Earth is the only planet that has diverse cultures. I mean how do the Klingons function? If they are all warriors where did they get the science to get into space?

Ichaos: same way mongolians built boats, and russians built trains and americans built nukes.
