Twitch was the first to bring word of Gary Oldman, Helena Bonham Carter and Garrett Hedlund being offered parts in the Warner Brothers backed US adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga and now we have learned that Kristen Stewart has been offered the part of Kei, a young medium who becomes the love interest for Kaneda - the role already offered to Hedlund. - Twitch Film

Kristen Stewart needs to break free from being known as only Bella in the Twilight franchise and this could be the role that does it. She is currently filming her Snow White film with Thor, Chris Hemsworth, and has eluded to be open to turning that into a franchise as well.

Kei in Akira is Kaneda's love interest, and his part of an anti-government faction. Her character at times appears to have supernatural powers, but is really being manipulated by the Espers, fellow psychics that influence events throughout the story.

Synopsis - Set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experiments.

You need to understand, the studio need her Twilight fans to come see the movie for it to make BIG money.

Based on the new (epic) Snow White trailer, I kinda hope she takes it.

Dont like Twilight, but love her.

I've only seen Hedlund in TRON, but I really liked him in that. Could be good as Kaneda, and I wouldn't mind seeing him as Daredevil.
Hope Gary Oldman gets this, he'd be my only reason to see this if he's in it.

@MrEko Yes they are two different demographics, but Twilight fans will still go and see it. Most Twilight fans will probably never heard of Akira. And I like Hedlund, he's hot, and I just love the sound of his voice....

my problem is barely with her, although i'm definitely not a fan, it with the strange awkward studio's americanization of it.
its going to be watered down, and milked dry and be a waste.

I have no faith in hollywood to take on projects of artistic scope and intelligence.
kristen stewart is pretty in line with the casting (although oldman is a god, but he will do anything). hedlund, stewart, both hot young properties. thats how they are marketing it. as a hollow summer pop moneymaker.

skip it.

I LOVE Akira, but the more I hear, the more Im getting worried this is going to suck.
Green Lantern is my favorite superhero, havent I had enough disappointment from Warner Bros? Now they are going to ruin Akira?
Warner Bros. also own two more of my favorite properties, Elfquest and Robotech... great
