This January, the first black Robin will be introduced in Detective Comics #27. This will be set in the far future and will take place in a tale contributed by Scott Snyder and his current partner on Vertigo's The Wake, Sean Murphy. Murphy clarifies that this is in an "imaginary future," so don't expect this to sync up with next September's "Five Years Later" event.

If this story becomes popular, I wouldn't rule out this Robin and his respective Batman making future appearances. After all, Damian as Batman was technically never canonical and we received several stories with him.

Detective Comics #27, written and illustrated by various contributors, is available January 8. The preliminary sketch is courtesy of Sean Murphy's Twitter.

You know I never realized that there had never been a Robin of color.

Actually, it almost happened in Smallville Season 11. Well, it technically would have been Nightwing. Remember how Stephanie Brown was supposed to be Nightwing and DC Editorial changed it to Barbara Gordon? Well, artist Criss Cross did some preliminary sketches of a black Stephanie Brown. I think you can find them as supplemental material in one of the issues of that story arc.

Kevberg@ I still dont see the problem with Miles Morales its not like the took Peter Parker and made him black all of a sudden. They just had someone pick up the Spiderman mantle after the death of Ultimate Spiderman.

JerryBlake@ As much as I love that concept and wouldn't mind seeing it people would shit houses before they let Bruce Wayne be portrayed by a black actor.

@JatevinM

yeah ... they still bitching about FF casting.
Once it got nothing to do with characters origin story (like Black Panther) i really can't see a problem here.
Shit ... Superman could be black too ...

jerryblake@ I'd rather we not convert every major white comic book character into black people lol.

@JatevinM

yeah ... you are right. Not every character. That would be weird. Having all of the X Men team black ... Playing basketball all day long :)

@Nomis,
That wasn't a rumour, that was what was going to happen before Burton signed on.

still i would like to see Nonso Anozie as Kingpin.
He was great in Ender's Game. I think he could pull this off nicely.

Nah, a stupid British newspaper reported that Murphy was going to be Riddler in Rises.

I'm curious as to when they're going to introduce a new Robin in the main continuity, one that'll stick around for a few years, and who it'll be. I feel like Robin is pretty essential to the essence of Batman, even if he doesn't have to be around constantly. It's always good to leave Batman on his own for a while in between Robins.

@Nomis ... some other trivias :)

*Charlie Sheen was considered to play Batman in Burton's movie

*David Bowie and James Woods were going for the Joker

*Sam Hamm’s original script for Batman 2, its name at the time, originally featured Marlon Wayans as Robin, a teenage garage mechanic. The character remained until a few days before Wayans was set to shoot his scenes, when it was cut.

*Madonna was considered as CatWoman. So was Cher.

*As for Robin

Leonardo DiCaprio and Chris O'Donnell were the top two contenders for the part, with the 24-year-old O'Donnell ultimately winning out over Leo, Ewan McGregor, Jude Law, and Alan Cumming

*Robin Williams had long been the leading candidate to play the Riddler should the character ever make it into a movie. Ultimately Williams turned down the role because he thought it wasn't as comedic as the version Frank Gorshin played in the sixties TV series.

@JorEllinator

Damian's mother is Arabic. So he would be too.

As for this news I have no problem with this. Dick, Jason & Tim will still be around. Maybe even Damian if they bring him back. I would have preferred the kid being a girl though. Seeing as Batwing is black. It would have been cool seeing another girl on the Bat family. You have Barbara, Stephanie & Cassandra.

DC are backing out again. "Imaginary future", are they just too scared too make a character like Robin permanently black. They need to grow a pair

Good find by the way

i would like to see Adrien Brody (but then again i would like to see Brody in everything. Underrated actor.)

How about someone shorter ? Any ideas ?

@Nomis

Dicaprio is a hit and miss guy for me. He's more of a Riddler guy i think. He played similiar character in "Aviator". His character was having problem with OCD as well.
