Ivan Reitman Talks Ghostbusters 3 Status

We've seen many rumors and stories about the status of the much-anticipated sequel. ComingSoon got an answer straight from the director about its status

We've all read the many rumors and articles on line regarding the status of the highly anticipated and much-wanted third film in the Ghostbusters franchise. At one point, it was rumored that the project was dead. Then it was back on and featured a rather "meh" story. Bill Murray even said the project was headed nowhere. It's been long-rumored that Bill Murray was the person holding the project up with his on-again-off-again attitude, as well as him essentially having the final say.

ComingSoon recently sat down with director Ivan Reitman, who has been promoting his latest film No Strings Attached. But they could not pass up the opportunity to ask about Ghostbusters 3. Here's how it went down.

CS:  So, you know we have to ask you what's going on with "Ghostbusters 3," right?
Ivan Reitman:
[laughs] We have a really good script, but Bill (Murray) has to read it. He hasn't read it. There has been all kinds of chatter online about him reading it and not liking it. He has not read a thing. He's never read anything. And I just sent it to him. So we'll see. God knows how long that will take. But we'll see.

CS: There have been a ton of stories online. Lots of back and forth...
Reitman:
There is almost nothing that is accurate online about that film. Will you write that for me?

CS: I will!
Reitman:
There is nothing... I mean, all these stories... there has been a ton of stuff about casting, about who's in... none of it is true.

CS: The whole Sigourney Weaver thing about Venkman's son taking over and Bill Murray coming back as a ghost...
Reitman:
Oh, no, yeah... I mean, Sigourney Weaver has a role in this movie. All the original characters have parts. As well as a whole bunch of new characters... it's got a really good story, this one. Maybe the best of the whole series. I hope we get to do it.

ecksmanfan: That's good news for fans, knowing that everything we've hear is essentially garbage and has no base. Hopefully, Murray will like what he reads so they can get the ball rolling on this one. I know I'd love to see this group get back together for another film. Here's to hoping, right?

I'd love to see this movie but I'm on Bill Murray's side. Once he found out the writers of Year One were doing the script he said he didn't want anything to do with it.

It's hard to argue with that since that movie had a really great cast and was totally unwatchable.

So if EVERYTHING that's been said has been a bunch of discard-able rumors, then are what we looking at is truly a big setback? If so, that sucks, but on the other hand..

I think Dan isn't just saying this stuff for a reason lately. The guy is excited, let a little info out to ease the fans, like letting the air out of a sightly too inflated balloon. Ivan is doing damage control here, he isn't denying or confirming anything, at all.

I look at it this way. I want this movie more then a fat kid loves to binge on all his favorite delights. I have waited since I was three years old, and to be quite honest, this has all been driving me nuts. I don't ask for much in this world, but I pray to The Almighty God we get this film next year in theaters, I would love a Summer or some kind of warm weather release, but if they still intend to get it out for the holidays, aka ARMAGEDDON-time, then what the hell, just as awesome, sometime to keep my spirits up during the bleak and bone white winter solstice, aka winter, aka the holiday season, where the God awful combination of red and green is everywhere, and there is nothing ORANGE in sight, all season long!

I'm past the point of the whole Bill Murray tug-a-long, and I am so freaking bored of the who-did-what, and the who-read-what stories out there, I say SHOOT for the projected MAY 2011 STARTING DATES!!! This isn't hard, since GB2 they made sequels to Blues Brothers, New Star Wars, Indiana Jones #4 Million-or-Something, Transformers 1+2, New Dark Knight movie Series, a Modern freaking Superman with KEVIN SPACEY of all people in it, and a million freaking REBOOTS. Heck, even Men In Black is getting to conclude it's trilogy before the GB's do! Seriously! ha ha ha

Anyways, so sorry for getting a little intense, it's just, I've wanted this movie for so long, and I pray it's not one of those things where the world gives me a little taste of something and then takes it away, I hope with all my might that this is something that finally happens perfectly for me, just like my first Nine Inch Nails concert in 2005, let it be another perfect day for me. I need this.

I'm kind of leaning for a reboot on this one. New cast and new story line might be better than bringing the old comedians who no longer can be consider in their comedic prime.

I will never support a reboot of Ghostbusters unless a third movie is made, then I would accept it, not necessarily support it, but accept it. I hate the reboot thing, unless the reboot has a direct purpose. You can always continue something, so why do people feel the need to just start over? I don't wanna hear about appealing to the young kids because sooner or later, the laziness will be washed away by their curiosity about the classics that go untouched, and then they will see what a classic treasure a movie can be..

Hey if the story is awesome. I'm all for a sequel to Ghosbusters. There is so much they can do with it, from amazing baddie ghosts, to cool new inventions similar to that in the recent video game. Some fresh meat of actors/characters to introduce to the overall Ghostbuster universe. I look at the return of a lot of these older movies as way to school a lot of these new movies on how to be good. We have recently had the return of Tron, with Tron Legacy (good movie, imo). It is time for the return of Ghostbusters.

All I can say is that if they make a third movie I hope it doesnt make me feel like I did when I watch the Last Indiana Jones movie. The Ghostbusters was probably my favorite movie from Childhood as well but I'll keep my fingers cross that they do it right and that it doesn't come off as cheesy!
