Rumor: Naomie Harris Being Considered for Dark Tower Female Lead

The talented and beautiful Pirates of the Caribbean star is rumored to be up for the role of Susannah Dean in the Ron Howard directed Dark Tower trilogy

We recently learned that Viggo Mortensen and Javier Bardem were rumored to be up for the lead role of Roland Deschain in the upcoming Dark Tower trilogy, being directed by Ron Howard, which is perfectly fine with most fans. Now, there are rumors about the lead female role. The NY Post kept it short and sweet in this rumor saying only

"That "Pirates of the Caribbean" beauty Naomie Harris is being considered for the female lead in the Ron Howard's eagerly anticipated "Dark Tower" trilogy."

The actress can also be seen in Danny Boyles' 28 Days Later... and James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin.

Stephan King has always thought that Angela Bassett, who can be seen in this year's Green Lantern as Amanda Waller, was a perfect fit for the role of Susannah Dean, but her age may keep that casting from happening. I'd keep this labeled as a rumor for now, but it's one for fans to be excited about as Harris was easily one of the best parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

For those not familiar with the character, here is a bit of a background on Susannah Dean:

Susannah Dean is originally known as Odetta Holmes and Detta Walker, two wildly different women trapped within the same body. After suffering a serious brain trauma early in her life, Odetta's damaged mind created the Detta personality, a cold-blooded and violent racist with intentions of killing both Roland and Eddie. Eventually, Roland successfully fuses the legless woman's two personalities into the solitary Susannah Dean, turning her into an invaluable member of his Ka-tet of gunslingers.

Nice one eks. She's lovely. Shame her character was totally wasted in POTC by growing and turning into a pile of crabs...for absolutely no reason!

Ror- No kidding. She's been great in everything I've seen her in, especially POTC. I hope this one ends up happening, she'd be an awesoem addition.

nice find but i still not sure about this movie at all since Akiva Goldsman is involved with this movie.

if Marvel does a Black Panther movie they should cast Naomie Harris as Monica Lynne

Good casting. Not a fan of POTC but she can def pull off Detta/Susannah/Mia.

Milo Ventimiglia would make a good Eddie imho.

Cool! Now just get James Caviezel or Viggo Mortensen as Roland Deschain, Casey Affleck as Eddie Dean, Gary Oldman as Marten Broadcloak / Walter O´Dim / Randall Flagg, Logan Lerman as young Roland, Max Records as Jake Chambers, Ellen Page as Susan Delgado, Mickey Rourke as Cort, Michael Fassbender as John Farson, William Hurt as Eldred Jonas, Garrett Hedlund as Cuthbert Allgood with John Malkovich as The Crimson King and Clint Eastwood as Steven Deschain!
This would be one epic cast if you ask me!:D

@Rolanddeschain19,

Have you lost your mind? I can understand most of your choices even if I don't agree with some of them, but Steve Buscemi as Eddie is the craziest thing I've ever heard. It makes me wonder if you have even read the books. I love Buscemi as an actor, but he is 53 years old....and looks even older.
Rolanddeschain19
Rolanddeschain19 - 1/10/2011, 12:50 AM
ambushbug, yeah you are right, this is more of fantasy cast for me, most of my choices are too old to play the parts.

but i think buscemi when he was younger, would have been perfect, i can just picture him, having it out with blaine the mono.

im sure none of my choices will be considerd, what do you think of thomas jane being roland

oh and i have read the books, some of them ive read twice, lol
Rolanddeschain19
Rolanddeschain19 - 1/10/2011, 1:14 AM
oh christopher walken should be man in black, not crimson king, i was drunk when i wrote all of this.

i doubt anyone else will agree with that choice, but it would be cool, if done right
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 1/10/2011, 3:57 AM
Rolanddeschain19@ Jane as Roland and Walken as Randall Flagg doesnt sound that bad! Specially Jane would be cool! Walken maybe too old? I prefer Gary Oldman who is one of my favorite actors!
rolanddeschain
rolanddeschain - 1/10/2011, 5:24 AM
AlexDeLarge666,Rolanddeschain19@ you guys have good fantasy cast choices, mine are kind of a mixture of both of yours with a couple of exceptions. Here's my fantasy cast:

Roland: Viggo Mortenson/James Brolin
Eddie: Owen Wilson/
Susannah: Sanaa Lathan(but I think this woman Naomie Harris looks perfect)
Jake: Insert child actor
Walter: Christopher Walken/Lance Henrickson
Crimson King: Tim Curry/Gary Oldman
Steven Deschain: Sam Elliot/Clint Eastwood
Cuthbert Allgood: Logan Lerman
Alain Johns: The kid from two and a half men
Susan Delgado: Ellen Page/Selena Gomez
Cort: Mickey Rourke
Sayre: Steve Buscemi
Manni wise man: John Malkovich
Flagg
Flagg - 1/10/2011, 6:53 AM
PERFECT casting. I imagined Susannah as Zoe Saldana, but Naomie Harris looks very close, and Saldana will probably be too busy with Star Trek 2 and Avatar 2 & 3 anyway.

I seriously hope Viggo gets the part of Roland. He's a FANTASTIC choice, for reasons many people have already said.

Now come on Ron, cast NATHAN GAMBLE as Jake Chambers! He's the right age (12), he's a terrific actor with the most amazing emotive ability I've seen in a child that age (watch him in The Mist and The Dark Knight, he's great!), he looks perfect for the part (blonde hair, and a great kind of wide-eyed innocence to him), he's already got experience starring in a Stephen King film (The Mist). Look NATHAN GAMBLE up on IMDb and see for yourself – he IS Jake Chambers! He's such an EXCELLENT fit for the role that I'll be very disappointed if it goes to anyone else, especially some tween prettyboy like Justin Bieber... most child actors can come off as annoying brats, but Gamble is the most likeable kid working in Hollywood today. He has the acting chops needed for all the crazy situations Jake goes through.

Oh, and get JARED LETO for Eddie! He's got the tall with pale skin and black hair look that most people picture Eddie as, and in Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, he played a heroin junkie! This can't be coincidence – this is KA! Leto's a bit old for the part of Eddie, true, but he looked not a day older than twenty in Requiem, and he was about thirty when they filmed it. He can pull it off!

Remember the face of your father, Ron Howard! Mortensen & Harris are TERRIFIC choices, just keep up the good work!

alexdelarge666@ thanks, bro, I've had this cast in my mind for a long time, so happy that they're finally going through with it. Still wish that JJ Abrams didn't wet the bed and bail out on this, but hey, maybe ron howard will blow the doors off this

Flagg@ not to put a damper on your cast, but you do realize that you have 5 different people cast as one character(man in black)? I do love finding a spot for Cillian Murphy, Ron Perlman, Clancy Brown, and Daniel Day Lewis. Anyplace you can get them in this project is a must.
Flagg
Flagg - 1/10/2011, 10:07 AM
@rolanddeschain

Yes, I know Randall Flagg, Walter o'Dim, Marten Broadcloak and the man in black are really all the same character, but remember, he's a shapeshifter! In the books, Roland didn't recognise that Marten and Walter were the same being (in the revised version of The Gunslinger, he muses that he never saw the two in the same room together). This means that Marten and Walter look different, meaning that they could be played by different actors. Towards the end of The Drawing of the Three, Roland remembers a time he encountered a sorcerer named Flagg, chasing after two men named Thomas and Dennis (from The Eyes of the Dragon) – he doesn't recognise Flagg as either Walter or Marten, which means that Flagg is yet another form. I admit I'm not sure if the man in black was a fourth form, or if he looked the same as Walter, but it's definitely a possibility. I thought it'd be cool to get a few different actors in there!

And by the way, the wizard Maerlyn (who created the bends o' the rainbow) is a different being entirely – the comics reveal that Flagg is actually the son of Maerlyn, a piece of information which Stephen King himself gave to the comic's writers.

flagg@ you raise a good point, it'd be a cool thing to do with him. I read the dt comics, as well, and I hope that they do something with that in the future, maybe an animated series, or even a tv show, like they did for the walking dead, that would be epic!
Flagg

@rolanddeschain

They're planning to make a live-action television version of the Gunslinger Born flashback storyline, and according to their press release, the filmmakers have also acquired the rights to the other arcs. So who knows, maybe we'll see them make live-action TV versions (or even feature films) of The Long Road Home, Treachery, The Fall of Gilead and The Battle of Jericho Hill? Hopefully they'll be able to use the same cast throughout for young Roland, Cuthbert, Alain and the others.

rolanddeschain - 1/10/2011, 11:31 AM
flagg@ aww man, that's great news! glad to hear that. That series is made for tv. Battle of Jericho Hill was a great read, I could easily see a gritty tv series for this, if A&E, or FX channel gets it, they seem to be able to push the envelope better than the other networks. After all these years, I'm finally gonna get what i've been asking for.
