Baddies That Need Movie Love: Ultron

Baddies That Need Movie Love: Ultron

This go-round, I bring you one of the greatest and most viscious foes the Avengers have ever faced. Ultron contained the best of Hank Pym, but also the worst of him, and most of all, a hatred towards huminity.

In Part 8 of my ongoing series, Baddies That Need Movie Love, I am sticking with Marvel once again, and bringing you one of the greatest and most fierce villains to ever challenge the Avengers. Having been reincarnated multiple times, Ultron is a "problem" of epic proportions, with only one goal in mind: destruction of humanity.

Ultron could arguably be the greatest invention of Hank Pym, but he could also be considered one of his worst. Ultron began as a simple robot, a torso with arms on tank treads. But it wasn't the physical appearance that was important. Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym placed concsiousness in Ultron, using his own brain patterns as a model for the robot's programming, giving him great intellect. But along with that, Ultron gained Pym's mental instability. The main difference is that Ultron had no conscience to keep that instability in check.

To Pym's surprise, the robot developed an advanced intellect within moments of its activation, and an unexpected capacity for emotion; most notably, it was filled with irrational hatred for its "father" Pym and the human race Pym represented.

Thus, a monster was born. After several "self rebuilds," Ultron-5 was eventually christened, and he was ready to wage war on humanity, and more specifically, the Avengers, a group which considered Pym a founding member. Ultron's first attempt at destroying the Avenger's was foiled when The Black Knight infiltrated Ultron's new "Masters of Evil" group, but the Avengers failed to keep the robot in possesion.

Following in his own creator's footsteps, Ultron used the inert form of the Human Torch android to once again attack the Avengers. The droid, which was ultimately dubbed "The Vision" by Wasp, went after the Avengers, but his remaining conscience, which Ultron lacks, helped him turn on his own creator, destroying Ultron. Vision then joined the Avengers in their fight against evil.

Many other reincarnations of Ultron have surfaced, now numbering in the teens, in many different forms, including an Adimantium shell, a female form, and a giant form of the droid. He has been rebuilt by the likes of Doctor Doom and Red Skull and has formed alliances with Kingpin among others. He has also been dispatched by numerous heroes including The Hulk, Human Torch and Galactus. Few villains have played such an integral part in Marvel Comics mythos and there is no doubt in my mind, as well as many other comic fans, that Ultron has earned his spot among comic book villain royalty.

So why Ultron? Why does he deserve to be featured in a film? If the above information isn't enough to convince you, let me give you a few more reasons. Once the Avengers hits screens next year, it will mark a huge moment in not only film comic book movie history, but in film history. Never before have we seen the likes of a team-up movie of this scale before. Having this team face a foe like Ultron could create some of the most impressive action sequences ever captured on film.

Picture this: you have Iron Man and Thor handling the aerial assault while folks like Black Widow, Captain America and Hawkeye handle the ground attacks. Add to that the brute force of Hulk, all taking on a droid that gives this team a challenge. That alone could make even the most lax comic book fan giddy with excitement.

However...we have one small problem with this idea; two actually: the absence of Hank and Janet Pym in the Avengers film line up. Being that Pym is the creator of Ultron, using his own brainwaves as a basis for it's intellect, you must include him in the story if Ultron were to be involved. Many have said that an easy fix would be to have Tony Stark act as the creator, which is fine, but then you have a new character all together. I am typically fine when films and their stories take a few liberties in order to make the film work, but this concept I just can't allow. So, Until we see the Pym's involved with Avenger films, I'm fine with waiting to see Ultron on film, but the easy way would be to just include the Pym's!

Now, for the final portion of my article, I need to reveal my choice for an actor to play the role of Ultron. Obviously, the physical character would have to be done in the same fashion as Iron Man and War Machine in the previous Iron Man films. The special effects used to create those suits was damn near perfect and I see no reason why the same cannot be done for Ultron. The actor I have chosen for the voice of Ultron is no stranger to voice-over work, even in the world of comic books, as he provided the voice of Magneto in X-Men: Evolution. But it was his role in the popular series Stargate: SG1 that he is most known for. Christopher Judge would be able to provide the menace and fear that is needed to make Ultron work. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to add a bit of voice modification in for good measure. The duo of Judge and Ultron could provide comic book movie fans with the one of the most epic battle sequences we've seen to date, lets' just hope all these elements can be put together.

Ultron is pretty cool he is kind of like Marvel's Brainiac tho. Judge is the best Magneto voice ever I loved him as Magneto on X Men Evolution.

I agree with marvel72, I want to see Ultron as the main villain in Avengers 2.

"Ultron could provide comic book movie fans with the one of the most epic battle sequences we've seen to date, lets' just hope all these elements can be put together." - I also agree with this statement.

I just, I don't why they won't throw in the Pyms in the Avengers movie. It's not as if they need a big origin, would they?

@ grif

ultron creates the vision & the origin story also involves wonderman.

those three characters would make the avengers sequel awesome.

On the subject of baddies but off the subject of Ultron has anybody seen how the new Jack O'Lantern has been reimagined in the pages of the new Venom series. I hope they dont kill him off too soon as he is just the most sinister character I've seen in a while, in fact I'll make him my avatar.

@Jefferys Well Its a team movie and everyone needs time i fell if they put in the Pyms either two things would happen

1) They would spend time explaining their origins thus taking time away from the "TEAM"

2) They would throw them in and give them a small origin story and the audience would care nothing about them, or what they could do.

I feel if they can get to an Avenger sequel make an Ant Man movie and put in the Wasp as his wife and make Ultron his project his working on with Claw the Villain and somehow Claw corrupts it, making it evil. Then you can do the Avengers 2. Hell that could lead to a Black Panther movie because of Claw and the Vibranium.

I love Ultron. He's one of the most badass villains around. I think if they do bring him into the MCU that maybe Tony Stark should create him, as it is easier to envision him creating something like Ultron. But then again, that takes a lot of potenial away from Pym's character. Either way, he would be awesome to see on the big screen.

This would be cool, however, what if they had Banner create him? Banner is unstable, is incredibly intelligent, and has the potential to do this. Perhaps a cameo in The Avengers? Right at the end have Banner and Stark in Stark's Suit Shop

Stark: What're you working on?
Banner: Uhm, it's not really anything, it's just, uh..
Stark: What is it?!
Banner: Well it's a variation of your Iron Man armor combined with a variation of your Jarvis program.
It's --
Stark: I know what would happen. I created both of them. An automated Iron Man, how wonderful (Just pray I don't deal with it or I'll have your *ss on a platter)
They walk out of the room, then you see the eyes turn on and you hear "Ultron program activating"

btw, I'm seeing Chris Judge next month! :D

F.uck the Skrulls and Krees aliens bullshit! Those characters are terrible, a total lack of creativity! Bring on ULTRON, KHANG and GALACTUS to fight the Avengers... they are enemies tuff enough to face the Avengers!

Ultron is my favorite Avengers villain, and the Vision is my favorite superhero, so I'm obviously all for seeing them. The only problem I see is that people were already complaining about fighting robots with the Iron Man films (even though they weren't all robots). Add Transformers, the Real Steel film, and it'll be even worse. So they'll have to come up with something that will seem fresh.

Very much agree Ultron for Avengers 2. Hell I wish they would angle it for Avengers 1, but that ain't gonna happen.

@Chewtoy, agree about he fighting robots dilemma, but with Ultron's mad red vapor coming out of mouth and Vision being played by a live actor, this could work and look very cool.

@SamHell they made a poor attempt to bring Absorbing Man to the big screen in The Hulk (Ang Lee version) it was Banner's father and it was okay until he turned into a mushroom jellyfish monster thing. I want to see Creel get his powers from Loki and tear it up with Thor and the Hulk at the same time. Talk about Tag Teaming it!!!!

Ultron is one of my favorite villains, and he would be perfect for the second Avengers movie. I thought the voice used for Ultron on the recent episodes of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes fit the character very well (GREAT story, btw). It could work for a movie Ultron as well.

Nephillim: Now THAT would be an interesting teamup. At the very least, Ultron would pick up some good ideas for upgrades.

SamHell: Absorbing Man is another of my favorite villains. Follow his origin right (forget that POS imitation in the Ang Lee Hulk film) and you have a formidable challenge for any hero or group of heroes.

PeteyParker: How long do we really need for an origin for the Pyms? That could be explained in probably thirty seconds or so. That wouldn't slow the movie up at all. The Pyms are essential for any Avengers movie, as anyone familiar with the books knows. Hell, for everything the filth-infested ultimates f*cked up about the Avengers, they at least had the Pyms there in some capacity. They're too important to the history of the team. They don't demand a lot of face time.

I find it funny that directors and producers find a need to keep things "real" when making comic book movies, when they are dealing with subject matter that is most assuredly not real. It seems as if they feel like an android enemy is "too sci-fi" when in all reality Ultron or Braniac would not only make great opponents for their respective rivals but also creative storylines revolving around how they came into existence.

My choice for movie love: Mr Sinister, and I think he could easily tie into the new X-Men reboot rather well.

I got a feeling it will be Kree/Skrull buildup in Avengers 2. Ultron might work as a sideplot villain, but I doubt he'll be included. We still need to get the Pym's in the cast, and with all the drama and backstory necessary to build them into the cast there's just too much assembly required to have Ultron as well.
