10 Superhero Sub-Genres We Need; But Probably Don't Deserve

With the way Comic Book Movies are maturing and reaching new audiences via different sub-genres, I figure it's about time that we explore different sub-genres within the Comic Book Movie genre. Read on to see the ten sub-genres that we need!

FILM NOIR

Marvel actually makes this first entry an easy one as they have many characters and stories under their 'Marvel Noir' label. While arguably Sin Ciy is as close as we've gotten, it's a graphic novel adaption and not an adaption of a comic book character. Characters like The Punisher or Deadpool have excellent runs with the Marvel Noir continuity, and these could definitely help in bringing these characters to screen in fresh and exciting ways.

WESTERN

With the distaste of Jonah Hex and Cowboys and Aliens fresh in my mouth, it's sad to admit that part of me doesn't want Hollywood to blend Westerns with other noteworthy genres akin to Sci-Fi or Comic Books. That said, we have to think optimistically and especially with Wolverine and his now classic storyline 'Old Man Logan' I think that Comic Book Movies can get a fresh shot of invigoration by taking an established character and placing him in a world with Western sensibilities. With the right writer, Old Man Logan could legitimize Western-Comic Book Movie hybrids!

CHASE FILMS

Films like North By Northwest, The Bourne series, The Terminator, and The Getaway have cemented this sub-genre with an exciting cat and mouse dynamic that leads to excellent tension throughout the film. While we saw some of this dynamic in some Marvel films like The Winter Soldier or Iron Man 3, I think the time is right to introduce a full movie featuring a hero on the run from a menacing presence. Captain America and his badass motorcycle would make for a fun movie don't you think?

JUNGLE EPIC

Many great Jungle films feature a protagonist that can traverse his land almost effortlessly, utilizing the land against invaders, and other antagonistic forces. A character like Black Panther could really reinvigorate the Jungle Epic genre and bring renewed interest to this type of story.

REVENGE FILMS

Movies where the character is pushed to their absolute limit before pushing back makes for great potential stories and makes characters lively and refreshing. It's deeply intimate and personal stories like Daredevil and the now infamous 'Born Again' that could make for a great take on the Revenge Film genre.

WAR FILMS

Civil War would be epic. Logisics aside, when we get this film, it'll blow minds.

MARTIAL ARTS

Looking back at classic martial arts films, especially all those Bruce Lee films you watched as a kid. Well if Marvel plays their cards right and we get a genuine Netflix series that follows the excellent 'Immortal Iron Fist' storyline, then we'll be set!

BIKER

Can we get a proper GHOST RIDER film finally?

SPY

Perhaps a film starring Black Widow with The Winter Soldier also appearing?

SORCERY

Agree with Ghost Rider, Spy and Civil War more than others. I think Winter Soldier did come brutally close to being a full on spy movie, and that was awesome. Who knows? Maybe Fury or Romanoff might finally get their own flick and that would just HAVE to be a spy film.

Also, Black Panther FTW.

I'm kind of confused about how the Netflix Iron First show is going to work. Are they going to show his origin and training in K'un L'un, or how he came back and is fighting crime in New York? And is Luke Cage going to be taking place in Hell's Kitchen or Harlem (where the character is supposed to be from)?

We just need good cbms. Sub-genres are irrelevant. We do NOT need Civil War. Not now, not five years from now, not during my lifetime. While I'm okay with getting ideas from comics, I'm against any attempt to directly adapt a comic storyline to a movie. (And TWS did have enough differences to not be considered a direct adaptation. As for Age of Ultron, from what Whedon has said, they're just using the name of that storyline, and the movie won't come close to being like the comic.) Plus, other than minor skirmishes like Thor vs. Hulk, I have no desire to see various heroes on opposing sides and really fighting each other. There are plenty of villains to fight, and they can always come up with more.

Chase films can definitely be fun. I like the Captain America motorcycle idea.

I love the list. I would add (murder) mystery. I would prefer murder mystery but a comic book film with any mystery would be greatly welcome.
