'Book of Eli' directors almost took on 'The Dark Knight Returns'

Plus, the duo also revel who they would've cast as Batman as well as how they feel about the current Bat-movies...

While talking with The Book Of Eli directors The Hughes Brothers, the pair revealed to MTV News that years ago they almost found themselves behind the camera for a big-screen adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.

"Three different Batman projects were presented to us over the years," revealed Albert Hughes. "The first time, it was 'The Dark Knight Returns.' I remember how dark the comic book was. Batman was old. He had to rely more on his tools and other shit, and he was a decrepit, 60 or 70 year-old man in this comic book."

When asked who they would have liked to cast in the role they revealed that they had their eyes on a Hollywood legend, "I remember saying to them back then, 'We want to do this, and you should get somebody like Clint Eastwood to do it,'" he added.

However, one of the reasons the project never came to fruition was because of the studio's realization that it would likely mean the end of the characters franchise, "Basically, what we were telling them it was the death of their franchise. Looking back now, we definitely would've killed that franchise."

They also shared their feelings about the current Batman movies, "Nolan's done a phenomenal job with Batman — especially the first one — and that's what we would've done if we were interested, but we were never going to do a Batman or Superman movie. I know we couldn't do that."

Damn they should've made it. Would've been sick as hell.

I don't think Eastwood would've been good though. Hes too scrawny now and Batman looked huge in TDKR.

Maybe Jeff Bridges but i don't know.

I think Nolan should do like a 30-60 min short after he finishes with his series and put it on DVD. I don't think this could ever happen without havering a series before it to base it on. The non CB readers wouldn't be able to grasp it.

Get MICHAEL KEATON as BATS and MARK HAMIL as JOKER, it would've been a damn near perfect movie!!!

EASTWOOD more a BATMAN BEYOND Bruce Wayne.

I'm glad they didn't do it.

"I remember how dark the comic book was. Batman was old. He had to rely more on his tools and other shit, and he was a decrepit, 60 or 70 year-old man in this comic book."

Decrepit? Tools and other shit? What are these guys on about. He kicked as much as as ever in TDKR. It sounds like they didn't read it and were just recalling what someone had told them about the book.

Too much ass kicking?

Too many villains?(actually works in stories not movies)

Too many old people?(i can agree on that)

@Myth-I'm definitly going to read it again after reading this(probably not right now though). Haven't read it in years.

They are huge comic books fans. They probably would have done justice to the movie.

But I'm curious why some of you think they didn't read the source material? Nothing in this article indicates that.

TDKR is one of the best comic books I have ever read, it’s Batman and Miller at it’s best. In regards to whether Eastwood would be a good choice for the part, I think he was. I mean Did you look at him in Gran Torino? Even thou he looks old he’s still pretty scary and inspires a lot of respect. Anyway, I’m glad they didn’t make it and I hope I never get to see it because that would mean the end of a great movie franchise.

I think Eastwood could have pulled off Bats ala TDKR regardless of his size. The way Frank Miller writes Batman sometimes it feels like he has Clint Eastwood in mind. Always callin' bad guys "Punk" and what not.

The Dark Knight Returns! Starring Mickey Rourke as Bad motherf*cking Ass Batman! He is the man who can kick ass!

I would love to see Rourke fighting with that ugly Mutant Leader from the comic.

These guys aren't the greatest but their movies are pretty solid. and even though we assume that they haven't read the book. They're the type that would do their homework and try to make it as atuentic as possible. They have a nice filming style, check out Dead Presadence, its a bit dated but its a great film. They would be Perfect for a Dare Devil movie.... They would make him an Ass Hole lol.
