Mark Millar On Captain America and The Avengers!

The comic book writer discusses how he feels about the upcoming Marvel movies being influenced by The Ultimates...

Den Of Geek recently sat down to talk to Mark Millar about Kick-Ass and during the interview asked him to share his thoughts on how he feels about the upcoming Captain America and Avengers movies being based off his and Bryan Hitch's iconic run on The Ultimates.

And speaking of your other books, this isn't about Kick-Ass, but I need to ask: were you intentionally writing Ultimates as an Avengers movie pitch? And now that they're making that movie, how would you feel if that's how it was used?

Well, they've already admitted they're doing it that way. Joe Johnston has said publically, the Captain America movie is going to be the first issue of Ultimates, plus the origin story, and then the Avengers movie will be material from Ultimates #2-#13, and maybe Ultimates Volume 2. I'm not speaking out of school, they've publically said this. And I'm flattered by it.

I literally don't see a cent, though, so it's not in my interests to try and make it a pitch, and convince them to base the movie on my thing. People have asked if I'm pissed off, but I just see it as a compliment. When you do work for hire, you have to realise you won't see money for that. If you've done a good job, and it reaches other mediums, then great.

I think what would make me unhappy is if I'd been like Jack Kirby or something, and only worked for Marvel, then saw them making billions and me only getting my pay 20 years before. That would be bleak. But that's why, hopefully, current creators realise that in the end, your stuff will be used, and you will not be paid, so be smart and do some creator-owned stuff. Ennis, Ellis, we all do it as well as our Marvel stuff.

The First Avenger: Captain America is set to be released on July 22, 2011 and The Avengers will assemble in theaters on May 4, 2012.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first information that has come out stating direct comic influence for Marvel's Ultimate series being used for both the Captain America and Avengers films. Millar's statements seem to contradict earlier reports by Kevin Feige and Joe Johnston on the story lines for the films.

Holy God. If they do do it like the first issue of Ultimates, I would be so happy. That's a great set up for the Captain America movie.

Mind you, Thor seems like he's already different from the Ultimates. So the Avengers movie may be slightly different.

Lee's going to be happy, he loves the Ultimates :)

Also, possible info on Cap casting?

Guy on twitter named Schofizzy says he knows who has been picked to wield the shield. Here are some tweets:

"@elmayimbe if you got the Cap's casting, I bet your happy. It's a pretty sweet choice! I've sworn not to run it.
1:05 PM Feb 18th from web in reply to elmayimbe"

"@DrewAtHitFix @elmayimbe McPartlin is not the guy for Captain, but the guy who has been cast does hail from NBC!
about 24 hours ago from web in reply to DrewAtHitFix"

"@DrewAtHitFix Ha! Think I would roll over and die, if that was the case. Believe me, I would've never expected the choice, but its perfect!"

"@LoboMIA good. That is my intention. People should be able to put two and two together but, reveal is coming SOON!

Not saying they're legit, but they do make for some fun conversation :)

I was thinking about sending you or Freshman a tip about it, but I wasn't sure because I didn't know how valid it was.

The Ultimates was brilliant but I'm not sure if I want the movies to follow the alien storyline in either films - the same tone is fine with me though and the way Loki took on the team in Ultimates 2 would be an awesome thing to see on the big screen! :)

Josh: "Hails" doesn't really mean he's on NBC currently, so I'm going to include recent NBC stars:

Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights)
Philip Winchester (Crusoe)
Ben McKenzie (Southland)
Robert Buckley (Lipstick Jungle)
David Anders (Heroes)
John Krasinski (The Office)

Those are a few.
DogsOfWar
DogsOfWar - 2/20/2010, 2:56 PM
Is it Porter? I think he could do the job, very well. He is a huge comic book fan as well.

@Poni-put up the article to see if it gets denied. Title goes "Rumored casting for Cap is..."
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 2/20/2010, 2:59 PM
As soon as I heard NBC I instantly thought Porter. He looks the part (albeit a tad youthful) and I think he showed potential in the first season of FNL that I watched, plus he really is a huge comic geek like Dogs said. I'm just not so sure on his voice and I don't know if I can really picture him in that big a role. If any CBM character, I'd say he's best for the Flash.

I'd really like to see Ben McKenzie get the role, I like his look and although I haven't seen him act personally, I've heard very good things about him on Southland, Johnny Got His Gun, and Junebug. He's kind of short, but with everything they can do in Hollywood these days...

Yeash I never heard anything from Johnston about using The Ultimates. So either Millar is talking out of turn..or talking out of his ass!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 2/20/2010, 3:01 PM
TYLER: Thanks! I just Googled them all one by one and Winchester and Buckley (didnt he at one time show interest in playing Cap?) are probably the two I'd go for based on looks! I dont think I've seen any of them act though!

MULTI: Yeah, I have to say that the directors word is what we should probably be listening to, lol! I'm sure they'll take influences from The Ultimates but most definitely not any sort of full on adaptation!

And post the damned article dude - I'm sure I did an article AGES ago about Buckley showing interest in playing Cap and you've got me intrigued! :P

JoshWilding - 2/20/2010, 3:05 PM
MULTI: Bud, you're talking to the guy who posted an article pretty much saying that Ryan McPartlin will be Captain America because he was at the premier of The Wolfman, lol! If he's not cast, I'll be wiping a whole load of eggs off of my face! ;D

I like the the Ultimate Cap version for the movie. I think its the way to go!

This is also my first time hearing the Ultimates were for sure gonna be used in the Avengers movie.

When you say eggs are you talking about the yellow or white part? Because if it's white, I don't think that's egg... ;P

jusme6 - 2/20/2010, 3:08 PM
@Multi: Was thinking the same thing. I haven't been on a whole lot this last week so I assumed I must have missed something. LOL! I just thought of something. What if Millar's all pissed off cause Marvel is gonna make a hella hella HELLA lotta money from his using his Ultimates in the movies so he decided to release some classified info just to spite them. Go getm Mark!

I'm real excited about the Ultimate Comics idea. I would love to see Ultimate Thor on the Avengers with the Classic look and hammer. That may come to pass. They said Avengers would be based on Ultimates 1 #2-13 and MAYBE Ultimates 2. Ultimates 2 was all about the team and even Thor doubting if he was really a god or just crazy. In the end Thor triumphantly proves that he IS the God of Thunder and it leaves everyone speechless. I would love to see that finish.

After the Avengers movie is made, fans will be clamoring for original material in their comicbook movies.

I love The Ultimates but I'd be devestated if they used Ultimate Thor (which they're thankfully not!) The whole thing about the other Ultimates doubting him as a God until he does something to prove it might work well in The Avengers though!

You never know though. Thor could well go through a bit of an Ultimate make over by the time The Avengers comes out and he will have been on Earth for a while. Maybe not the hippy/loony thing..but in a lot of other ways they are not THAT different from each other. Personally I hope they do add a little element of hippy nut Thor in Avengers.

Look, Ultimates is fine and dandy. The thing about it is this: they can't stick to the source material 100% for everything, like Mark is trying to make it seem. "Captain America" is going to have some characters who weren't in the Ultimates stuff. That's been said, already. "Iron Man" and "Thor" are NOT Ultimates based. So far, aside from Nick Fury and his bunch, there are no Ultimates connections, as far as I know. If they have Chitari in "The Avengers", then I'm going to be a little confused and pissed off at the same time. Chitari are the Ultimate Skrulls, I think. So, that would be Marvel's way of getting Skrulls on film, without having to go through Fox and their Fantastic Four crap. Now, the reason I'd be a little pissed is that it looked like someone had Bruce under control at the end of "The Incredible Hulk". So, I think that they were hinting at a Loki takeover. I doubt that anyone else thought/thinks the same thing, but w/e. Hope I'm not seeming like a total dick, but yeah.

ULTIMATES WAY, NO..I MEAN THIS IS A DEBUT TO THE BIG SCREEN OF THE CONSUMMATE AMERICAN SOLDIER, THERES AMERICAN IDOL, APPLE PIE, UNCLE SAM, AND CAPTAIN AMERICA...I MEAN ITS COOL..ULTIMATES SERIES STUFF IS NEW FRESH AND A BIT GRITTIER, BUT HONESTLY, PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW A BEGINNING, THE PURE UNCHANGED START, THE STORY TO FANS AND NOVICES ALIKE TO GET A BASE TO JUMP OFF OF BEFORE ITS ALL UPDATED TO A NEW STORY TYPE, I SAY START FROM THE BEGINNING BEGINNING..PEOPLE THAT CHANGE A ICONIC FIGURE DUE IT JUSTICE BUT THE INJUSTICE WOULD TO BE NOT REVEALING A TRUE UNCHANGED ORIGIN STORY OF SUPERHERO EVERYONE KNOWS

gunsmith- did u read ultimates #1? its pretty much the same story just with updated art. skinny guy cant join the army, takes super soldier serum, WAM BAM turns into cap, fights a buncha nazis, tries to stop a rocket aimed at the white house and gets frozen in ice. end of story.

josh- i actually liked ur cap at the wolfman premiere way better than this mcpartlin guy

aaaah

no more Ultimate on film, please

As soon as you start making superheroes gritty then you have to making excuses as to why they dress how they do. Apparently the audience are incapable of suspending their disbelief, apparently we'd rather see a gas Galactus and Xmen in black leather - did you know black leather is much more 'gritty' and 'realistic' than yellow or blue.

Great interview (and not just the Cap/Avengers stuff).

What Makiveli said. What I liked about the Ultimates as a reader of the original stuff (not long after they came out too :grandpa:) is that it was pretty much the same story, but less cheesy, more believable - updated. And importantly for this discussion, that you could see this working on the big screen.

Yes it had its 'controversial' takes on some characters, such as Cap being an asshole, but we already know from Iron Man and Incredible Hulk what mix they're going for, and I just see the same mix of the classic characters, with elements from the Ultimates too (Stark needing help to put on the suit, but looking more sleek/classic), rather than a direct take on the Ultimates comic itself. They'll take what they need from both comic 'universes', depending on what works best.

So this is all good. Carry on Marvel. :)

Edit: @DannyRand: Tell me you didn't get a thrill when Cap suddenly twigs what a stooge he's been and breaks out of the SHIELD helicarrier by hitching a lift on a jet. THAT'S when he becomes the Cap we know... (sorta). And that would look awesome on screen. ;)
