Although I originally planned to make this a slightly bigger cast featuring the supporting characters from Whedon’s run on the title, I instead decided to spend a little more time coming up with my casting choices for the core team of X-Men. (Did anyone really want to see Negasonic Teenage Warhead cast anyway, lol!?) I have however, included some of the main characters that the series introduced!
In 2004, Marvel used the title Astonishing X-Men for the ongoing X-Men series written by Joss Whedon and illustrated by John Cassaday. It is a continuation of Grant Morrison's New X-Men title and features a similar line-up of characters, including Cyclops and Emma Frost (as co-team leaders), Wolverine, Beast, Colossus, Shadowcat and Armor.
Brandon Routh as Cyclops
JoshW: Although I’d be happy to see Routh return as DC’s Superman, I think that’s unlikely as the reaction to the first movie will surely mean that they’ll decide to start a new, darker franchise with a fresh start and fresh cast! Regardless of what does or doesn’t happen with that I believe that Routh is far better suited to playing Cyclops. He not only looks perfect for the part but his recent role in Chuck clearly shows that he has what it takes to play an effective leader.
Miranda Raison as Emma Frost
JoshW: Though she’s probably not that well known to anyone outside of the UK she is a great actress who has the right look, personality and even accent (The character is British remember! Forget what you saw in Wolverine, lol!) to play Emma! After seeing her great performances in Spooks, Doctor Who and most recently in comedy drama Married Single Other, I’m confident that she would make a brilliant White Queen!
Christian Kane as Wolverine
JoshW: To be honest, I was never a big fan of seeing Kane play Wolverine. (My personal choice is Adam Baldwin who I still think is a great choice to play the character but too tall for a completely faithful adaptation of the character) However, after checking the guy out on YouTube I have to say that he definitely has the right look, voice and demeanour to play Logan. He may not have the greatest acting resume or be all that well known but that really doesn’t matter when it comes to how well he’d play the character - and I for one think he’d do a great job!
Billy Crudup as Beast
JoshW: Yes, I know I cast him as Mr Fantastic in my last cast but I wanted to see him play Beast long before that! I’m not disputing the fact that he’d make a perfect Reed but ever since I started this cast a few weeks ago, up until now when I’ve finally gotten around to finishing it, I can honestly not think of an actor who would be better suited to play Hank McCoy! His look, voice and acting style makes him perfect for the role in my opinion and after seeing his unique performances in movies like Public Enemies and Watchmen I’m sure that he’s the right guy for the job!
Matthew Fox as Colossus
JoshW: Ok, so even I’ll admit that this might seem like a bit of an odd choice! While watching last week’s Jack centred episode of Lost I suddenly realised that Fox has all of the right qualities, not to mention the right look, to play Colossus! His character in that has the same quiet, intense brooding quality that the comic book character has and as long as he could pull off the Russian accent I think that he’d be perfect for the role!
Missy Peregrym as Shadowcat
JoshW: A great actress from the brilliant show that should never have been cancelled, Reaper. She clearly looks the part but is also a very talented actress. She’s the right age for the slightly older Kitty from the recent comic books but also has the right personality and is great at both dramatic and comedic scenes - the perfect combination to bring the character to life on the big screen.
Julia Ling as Armor
JoshW: Although it may first seem that at 27 she is too old to play Armor, I don’t think that she’d have any problem playing someone younger who’s supposed to be in her late teens. She actually looks perfect for the role in my opinion anyway and as Anna in the first three seasons of Chuck she definitely showed that she has the right attitude for the character.
Malin Ackerman as Abigail Brand
The leader of the S.W.O.R.D., a sub-division of SHIELD that deals with extraterrestrial matters.
Kristen Bell as the voice of Danger
Danger was once the control unit for the X-Men's Danger Room. Since gaining self-awareness and being released, danger has taken on humanoid form.
Robert Maillet as Ord
Ord is an alien from the planet Breakworld. He trained for decades and was sent to Earth, under the belief that Colossus is destined to destroy his home planet.
