More From Jon Favreau on Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers!

The director discusses how Iron Man 2 will effect future Marvel movies, Nick Fury's role in the film and the build up to The Avengers...

In an interview with Jon Favreau in the latest issue of Total Film (May 2010) he talks more about Iron Man 2 and it's place in the universe that Marvel are building as well as sharing his thoughts on the rest of the upcoming movies that will lead into 2012's The Avengers. For more from the director, the magazine is on sale now.

On Iron Man 2 and it's effect on the Marvel movie universe:

Honestly, I'm the guy who's running, holding the torch, trying to get this story done. If I don't do a good job with this one it jeopardises all future films in the collective Marvel Universe. Iron Man was the first film to establish the tone of the world. Since Marvel have committed to make the universe, Iron Man 2 does have a ripple effect into the other movies.

On Nick Fury's Iron Man cameo:

When I decided to have Nick Fury after the credits in Iron Man, that easter egg scene turned into a nine-picture deal for Samuel L. Jackson. So these little impulsive decisions that are based on creative whim have ramifications that affect the entire set of franchises.

On building up to The Avengers:

It's a small shop. The only people working on this film have been myself, Kevin Feige and Jeremy Latcham. They'll come by and talk to me about what's happening on the other projects and ask my opinion on things. They're working on The Avengers, Kevin's working on Thor and Captain America, so you're going to get a consistent vision throughout. But then you have to account for the the filmakers and Kenneth definitely has a different sensibility than me.

Thor does begin to marry the worlds and opens the door for The Avengers.

On what we can expect to see in Iron Man 2:

We deal a lot with Nick Fury in this one and S.H.I.E.L.D is much more of a presence...

Gotbatman: Thanks man, it took a little while to type up but I think this is a pretty interesting story. :)

It's good to know that Favreau is involved in the running of the other movies especially as the whole movie universe is basically just building off what Iron Man started back in 2008. Roll on April 30th!!!

Very cool Josh! I did not know that Fury was Favreau's idea. That makes sense that he is not in EVERY movie (Thor) to link them together. I wonder if Marvel took this cue for SHIELD linking things or it was their intention all along.

It's March Madness time! Check out the link for Superhero March Madness or go to the Features section to cast your votes!

I love the continuity of the Marvel universe. Maybe DC didn't get that memo.

Makes no sense why DC wouldn't create their Universe either...With them saying there will be no Easter Eggs in Lantern they lost out on a big opportunity. If their intent is to work on JLA then why not start with Lantern. Imagine a Supes reference in Lantern? Or maybe even a Manhunter cameo when Hal Jordan takes off into space when he first gets the Ring. A quick peek, nothin significant...A single Universe makes sense..the comics are a single universe for the most part...DC is droppin the ball...Marvel is almost there...if they could only get their properties back...then life would be perfect...haha

DOGS: Cheers bud, I have a feeling we probably have Favreau to thank for Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. being such a big part of the movie universe especially as it was his idea to introduce Fury (something I didnt know either!) I know a lot of users here dont like The Ultimates but I think we have that series to thanks for the inspiration of using S.H.I.E.L.D. to bring The Avengers together!

MsKyle08: Thanks! Personally, I'd just like to know how much he got paid for signing such a big contract! Enough to fill a pool full of money I'm guessing, lol!

I like the ideah of Sam as Nick Furry, but i just need one thing! Sam could get into a little better shape... Kinda like Harrison Ford did for the new Indianna Jones. It would just look better and be more believable for me to see him as a badd ass government opperative.

@ josh

you're exactly right!!! using the Ultimates is probably one of the only things that is getting these movies made. it puts a little bit more of a realistic spin on things that makes it more viewable to the general audience. in my perfect world, it will be the Ultimates story line, with 616 characterizations of the heroes.

Nice one Josh..good ol Total Film, I actually think they are starting to be more reliable review wise than Empire lately.

Thanks guys! :)

CDB: Same here - The Ultimates did a lot of things well and for anyone worried that there wont be time to introduce Hank and Janet in The Avengers, if they do it the same way to The Ultimates it could be done with 10 minutes, lol!

LEE: I'm telling you - you should give The Ultimates a chance! Especially the second volume! Just avoid the third one by Jeph Loeb...I'd rather read shit off toilet paper! :P

ROR: Yeah, I mostly only pick either one up when there's something in them that really interests me but I have to agree that I prefer Total Film's reviews as well - personally, I find myself agreeing with them a lot more often than I do with Empire!

CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and im with JoshW... Ultimates did have a lot of good points to it!

and its good to hear that the same people are involved in the creative process of all the films... that will make for a great build up to a fantastic climax!

@ josh

right again my friend!!! and correct me if i'm wrong, but the whole point of introducing the main characters in their own movies first was so they can focus on things that take place in Avengers without introducing them all. that frees up a LOT of time to intro Hank and Jan. like you said, ESPECIALLY if they do it like the ultimates, where they already work as scientists for shield.

So anxious to see Iron Man 2! In a way it's bittersweet 'cause Marvel is handling these characters the right way that I wish they could reclaim rights to the X-Men & reboot it :( damn you FOX!

Fav is one of the best movie minds in the business right now. I really enjoy his work.

I agree he needs to be the main man for Marvel. He should be Executive Producer for all of them.

He was the guy responsible for the movie (Iron Man) that basically put Marvel back in business.

Give him control and I doubt the fans will be disappointed. He seems to understand what fans (especially us comic book fans) want in these movies.

I think Fav's gonna be burnt out after IM3, and you'd think Brannagh would be in on it by now - guess he REALLY has his hands full, but that's kinda dissapointing.

Starting to think Leterrier might be up for the job, personally - at least should be consulting. Johnston just scares the cap err crap outta me, for now. lol

Rodimus9 - "Mark Valley is looking like the best vote for Cap!"

I dunno about that, but it is definitely a sweet pic.

DAMN! a NINE picture deal..what are the NINE?

Iron Man 2
Iron Man 3
Thor
Avengers
Captain America

What are the other 4?

Spider-Man?

(it makes sense if there going the ULT. route)

I am not sure.

Ultron8872

My only concern with the Avengers is that they will try to cram too many characters into the movie.

It needs to focus on the "founding" members (IM, Thor, Hulk, Wasp, Ant-Man, and Cap).

Fury's role should be as the their link to SHIELD, not as an actual member.

Widow and War Machine shouldn't be members to begin with. Let them have supporting roles.

We only need the "Big Guns" first.

If I had my picks, then the cast would be:

Starring
Matt Damon- Cap/Rogers
Robert Downey, Jr.- IM/Stark
Edward Norton, Jr.- Hulk/Banner
Chris Hemsworth- Thor/Blake
Aaron Eckhart- Ant-Man/Pym
Jessica Biel- Wasp/Van Dyne

Supporting Cast
Samuel L. Jackson- Nick Fury
Scarlett Johannson- Black Widow/Romanova
Don Cheadle- War Machine/Rhodes
Jon Favreau- Happy Hogan
Gwyneth Paltrow- Pepper Potts
Natalie Portman- Jane Foster
Liv Tyler- Betty Ross
Milla Jovovich- Sharon Carter

Villians
Tom Hiddleston- Loki
Ultron- voiced by Zachary Quinto

That's a lot of green to shell out, and a lot characters to work in to a two/two and a half hour film.

Which is why they should focus on the "first six" Avengers.

Also, I realize that its not going to be Damon as Cap.

If we are going young for Cap, I vote for Jensen Ackles.

Disclaimer: this is just my opinion. Please be gentle with the criticism. LOL!

Speculation on the 9 movies for Sam Jax

IM(does that one count or is it after this one?)
IM2
Thor
Cap
Avengers
Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD
IM3
A2
A3

Supporting role in the first five.

Then he's the star in the sixth one, of course.

Finally, back to a supporting role in the last three. Maybe a little more dialog than the first five.

T2: Cheers man and I couldnt agree with you more if I tried - Marvel need to both hurry up with their casting choice and pick someone who'll impress comic book fans and the general movie going public alike! That person, in my opinion, is Chris Evans! :)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

CDB: You're completely right about them doing that with the characters' solo movies and as it looks like we're definitely not going to see Ant-Man before The Avengers it would be easy to introduce them in the style of The Ultimates - I wonder what they're planning on doing for a base though? I did an editorial on it last year and the popular choice seemed to be the classic mansion. I'd like to see that over the Triskelion but I would actually prefer Stark Tower even more so!

PETE: Thanks mate - it would make sense if they go the Ultimate route but it wont be by Marvel Studios and I'm pretty sure that's who he's signed the deal with! Maybe they'll do a seperate film just featuring Fury (not sure how interesting that would be though!) or they're thinking of including him in the upcoming (I hope!!!) Black Panther or Doctor Strange movies!

Ultron8872: I dont agree with all your choices but only because I feel strongly about who I'd like to see in some of those roles - you should do a fan cast dude! :)
