A quick note to everyone - If you have image editing software (like Photoshop), it's a good idea to resize/sample your image so that the width and height will fit, and the file size will be smaller, resulting in quicker downloads.

Things to keep in mind:

JPG/JPEG is for photographs or images with LOTS of colors.

GIF is for animated graphics and images with a limited color pallet (most avatars and comic type images fall into this category).

If you don't have image editing software, there are some sites you can use to resize images (ShinkPictures.com for example).

Anything over 800 pixels wide is usually overkill, unless it's for a wallpaper!
