Leonardo DiCaprio On The Superheroes He Nearly Played!

The Inception actor talks about being in the running for the title roles in Spider-Man, Batman, Star Wars and reveals that he'd still be willing to play a superhero...

"I never screen-tested," the actor said in an interview with Shortlist after revealing that he was in talks to play Robin. "I had a meeting with Joel Schumacher. It was just one meeting and, no, I didn't end up doing it...As I recall I took the meeting, but didn't want to play the role. Joel Schumacher is a very talented director but I don't think I was ready for anything like that."

DiCaprio was also in talks to play Anakin Skywalker in the recent Star Wars prequels but said that, "he didn't feel ready to take that dive" indicating he wasn't enthusiastic about signing up for a big franchise movie.

Perhaps most surprisingly, the actor also confessed that he had the chance to take the lead role of Peter Parker in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man back in 2002, "That was another one of those situations, similar to Robin, where I didn't feel ready to put on that suit yet. They got in touch with me."

As for whether he'd ever be willing to play a superhero the actor added, "You never know. You never know. They're getting better and better as far as complex characters in these movies. I haven't yet. But no, I don't rule out anything."

You really didn't think he'd say what we all KNOW he wanted to say did you? lol
Am I the only person who thinks Leo would make a freaking awesome Prince Namor? I really think he could pull off the regal aspect of the character. Just what to do about those ankle wings though? lol

Well eventually, he could pull off a great Marvel Boy if Marvel chose to go that route. Seeing him become Captain Marvel would be awesome!
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 7/15/2010, 7:08 AM
I think he would have made a great Anakin, but it probably wouldn't have helped his credibility so it was the right decision to turn it down. Him as Anakin, the same basic plot, but better scripts would have made the prequel trilogy a lot better.

DiCaprio is a brilliant actor but I honestly cant think of a single superhero he'd be well suited to playing! Captain Marvel is probably the best suggestion I've heard so far though! :)

It could be interesting to see him tackle a villain actually. But again, I have no idea which character (Marvel or DC) that he either looks like or suits acting style wise.

Thank GOD he never was cast!!! Keep this hack from any comic franchise!!! But thank you,Leo, for sparing us the embarassment of you in a CBM!

I kinda dig the Green Arrow idea...the script for supermax was just soooo fresh as far as "superhero" movies are concerned and it was a cool way of introducing a "B" character without a lengthy origin story, which funny enough, a good "sequel" to SUPERMAX could be a Green Arrow origin tale. A year or two back DC did a Green Arrow: Year One which was really well done and would be a good basis for a GA flick.
Still think Leo would make a superb Namor though!

Dicaprio is a hack..well, i have heard it all now I really have. The guy is probably one of the bets actors working today, but again, gotta take the diff opinions and all that, even if they are totally wrong;)

Anyway, I agree with the majority that I can't think of a specific character he would seem right for, probably more suited to a villain. Also, Inception 2mo, oh yes!

When he was younger he would have made the perfect Bucky. At this stage in his life you could bleach his hair and he could play one of my all time favorite characters.

If Ben affleck can play be allowed to pay a superhero then Leo can play a superhero but I think his acting chops are more deserving for a villain.

Is anyone else hoping that he is involved in Nolan's next Batman installment?! I definitely am. If so, anyone have any thoughts on who he would play?

He would have made the last two star wars movies amazing. He would have been a perfect Anakin.
AlternateNo4

he has the presence for namor but namor is an effin beast. leo couldn't pull off namor even if ate steroids like cereal and worked out 24/7 from today until post production. not about being in shape or out... just doesn't have the frame for a namor type hero.

Honestly, and I know I will get murdered for this, btu I have to say it... Joel Schumaker is a good director.

Seriously. The majority of his movies, save for the Batman franchise, are actually pretty good. Particularly Lost Boys, 8MM, Phone Booth, Number 23 and Phantom of the Opera.

He has a fairly solid resume.
AlternateNo4
AlternateNo4 - 7/15/2010, 8:29 AM
hawk's right. and schumacher was INSTRUCTED to camp up the batman movies so they wouldn't gross out the little kids as much as burton's.

that doesn't excuse him for allowing uma thurman's stomach-churning acting to hit the final cut, though. ivy made das gubernator look like olivier.
AlternateNo4

you know who looked like namor? olivier gruner. remember that guy? he's like 50 now though.

The title is a little misleading. It doesn't sound like he nearly played any superhero role. Just calling it like I am reading it. ;-)

Never cared for DiCaprio, so I am fine with him never being in a CBM.

I think he would make a great GREEN ARROW!
THEHAWK

@Alternate. Agreed, he still holds a lot of the blame, but not all of it should be laid on him.

Burton scared kids so WB got rid of him and he went to the proper place to scare kids, Disney.

The they brought a guy most famous for making one of the best vampire movies in the past few decades to make it kid friendly by adding sexual humor and homoerotic elements. You know, for kids!

soconscious- How old is Nemesis? I know nothing about that dude...

Tea- Yeah, his head definitely looks like a bloated raspberry. Abuse of alcohol does that to a guy. But if he ever had his head fat sucked out through a tube, he'd be a great Noh-Varr :)

@Hawksblueyes: I'd love for them have an "Adam Warlock: and the Infinity Watch" movie with Leo in the lead role.

@THEHAWK: I've heard that his other films were really good, so yeah. I mean: I like the "Rush Hour" films, even though Ratner slaughtered "X-Men: The Last Stand". Just sayin'.

LMFAO @ teabag's comment: "Last time i checked Captain Mar-Vel didnt have a head the size of a 3rd world country"

@ Hawk - LOL, "Burton scared kids so WB got rid of him and he went to the proper place to scare kids, Disney" TOO TRUE!!!

Gawd, is this guy lucky for not being involved in that Schumacher crapfest!

Though I actually think he would have done the new Star Wars movies some justice. That's too bad. Now we have to wait for a reboot after George Lucas is worm food ...

MidKnight35 - 7/15/2010, 9:31 AM
Leo could pull off either Riddler or Black Mask in the next Batman installment. He has the chops to take on both villains even though they are very different. I see him as an OCD Riddler much like he played Howard Hughes in the Aviator. He actually had to go to therapy to get rid of some of the nervous tics he created for his role as Howard. I also think he can menacing as the mob boss Black Mask, cold, cunning, and ruthless.

I always thought he'd be a great Jonny Quest when he was younger. Other than that there is no comic-book hero he resembles so that means he has to be a villian. LOL!

@McLovin. Maybe, but they are making a new trilogy with Speilberg and COppola directing. Lucas is still writing and producing it.
