Batman 3 To Be Michael Caine's Last As Alfred The Butler?

Batman 3 To Be Michael Caine's Last As Alfred The Butler?

Chris Nolan might of confirmed that he's directing, but Sir Michael Caine is still seemingly unsure about whether he'll be in it, and hints that it'll be his last movie...

Earlier today, RorMachine brought us the welcome news that Christopher Nolan will indeed helm the currently untitled third installment in his series of movies based on the Caped Crusader's comic book adventures.

While we all know that Sir Michael Caine will more than likely be back to repirise his role as Alfred, he seems to still be unsure in a recent radio interview when asked about about the novel he's currently writing which he'll continue to work on, ""when I finish Batman, if I make Batman." What's up with the "if"? Surely Warner Bros have signed him on at this point?

Even more interesting/worrying was what he went on to say next. If any of you, like me, are hoping that Nolan stays on and continues to make Batman movies then the veteran actor might not be a part of them as he said: "I'm completely booked up for three years so I'm okay. I'll be 80 when it's (Batman 3) finished and I might retire."

80! Who'd have guessed it? Well, I for one hope that Caine has no intention of retiring anytime soon but do you think that the above statement does indeed imply that Batman 3 will be his last? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Well, since we know this will be Nolan's last Bat, I would assume Caine isn't expecting to stay on as Alfred..but we can hope!

Nolan has always said that it's a trilogy. They'll re-boot it like Spiderman after Batman 3 is done.

Cheers.

they should do what they did with the original trilogy.

keep the same actors who portrayed alfred and gordon. the 4 orginal batman films had an almost new cast with a new director, but they kept michael gough as alfred and pat hingle as com.gordon.

i would like to see him or gary oldman to return after nolan is done.

i say this: BILL [frick]ING MURRARY AND MICHAEL [frick]ING CAINE!

Has anyone actually confirmed that Batman 3 will be Nolan's last!? I sure as hell hope not as I was hoping for a Superman/Batman team-up set in the Nolanverse as the chances of a JLA movie are looking more and more dire these days! :P

Well I guess Caine should continue on Bat Movies in the future if he be able to, even without Nolan as the Director, or even with the rest of the cast being new, it would be like Desmond Llewelyn on Bond Movies, he was on the movies for 30 years even with the cast being changed.
And I dont think necessary rebooting it after Nolan is done, they should keep the franchise.
Nice find @Josh!

Even if Batman 3 is his last, I dont think that Nolan will walk away from the DC Universe completely. After all, he's writing the new Superman movie (which he's not directing) so whose to say he wont do the same for future Batman films as well? Wouldnt it be awesome if he helmed a "World's Finest" movie? Now that would be the perfect way for Nolan to move on to other things! :D

Michael Caine's Alfred has been nothing short of flawless. He's been great.

As long as he keeps working with WB, I bet WB won't hesitate to ask for his 2 cents about everything superhero. He might still play a role with future DC movies just not as a director.

LOL, rich Bruce Wayne with an 80 year old butler. That's cold.

Alfred, "My back hurts."
Bruce, "What's that? I'd love a sandwhich."

This is pretty much the last of the series. Nolan is leaving, it's pretty much definite that Bale is leaving, and Caine is more than likely leaving too.

Miachael Caine was excellent as Alfred. He interpretation of the character is by far for me was the best. I was really hoping him to be in the lead role the upcoming movie version of "The Equalizer" TV series which originally starred Edwood Woodward (RIP).

Maybe if ever Nolan should continue the Batman franchise we could always have CGI of Caine like Brando in Superman-- Joke.

I sure hope not. He is a film veteran and not just a veteran for the sake of being a veteran. He still kicks ass. If you haven't seen Harry Brown, I say you do. Jaws 4 was bareable with him in it.

And god do I love the Jack the Ripper TV series.

Dude. No way he gets replaced. If Nolan does a fourth he will too. After batman 3 breaks a billion, they'll give all the actors whatever they want. . . . Unless they kill him in the 3rd!!! Dum dum dum.

Pretty sure its gonna be Nolans last Batman, as he did say it was a trilogy. Shame about Sir Micheal Caine retiring hes such an amazing actor
dancingmonkey08
dancingmonkey08 - 9/30/2010, 5:01 AM
Josh, understand this, Nolan even said this would be his last Batman movie, there will be a new director for any future movie so dont hope for anymore Nolan movies, just hope Batman 3 will complete the first perfect superhero trilogy ever. Heres where Nolan basically implied it would be his last Batman movie, its near the bottom of the article:

http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/03/10/christopher-nolan-takes-flight-with-superman-we-have-a-fantastic-story-1/

and as magic8 said, Nolan can always stay on as producer to make sure the Batman franchise doesnt go the way it originally did

And cmon Josh, Michael Caine will be 80, I think it is the right time to retire for him. And anyway, wouldnt it be a fantastic movie to finish his career on?! It will be much better than Sean Connery's last movie, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I still have shudders thinking about that crap, even though he was awesome in it as usual.

But I am completely fine with Michael retiring, he has a movie career that has covered just about everything they could make a movie about, if he goes out in style with what will hopefully will be the awesome Batman 3, I will be very happy. Although he has the most awesome voice to continue on a career in voice-acting roles, in my opinion

And anyway, most franchises that are willing to go beyond a trilogy really need to recast everyone by that point and for the Batman movies, there isnt that many characters to recast, Batman, Alfred, Gordon, Lucius Fox, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Ra's Al Ghul, Zhasz, Joker (for different reasons of course) and whoever will be the villains in Batman 3. Some of these may never return in the movies either so they wont all need recasting. I dont want a reboot but I think a loose continuation (that could fit in better with a potential JLA franchise) with a total recast will be much better.

When comparing it to a comic, the way I look at it is, different artists and writers on a comic can be compared to a different director or writer on a CBM, they may change some things around and characters might look different but the essence of the characters stays the same and its all in the same continuity too. Its the same for the movies, the cast will look different but if future directors and casts stay true to the character of Batman, it can all be left in the same continuity.

@TrickyMack

FFS, does it have to be a reboot? Everybody always thinks its going to be a reboot but why not a loose continuation. With another [frick]ing reboot, it will be stupid. Reboots are only needed when the franchise is dying and the Batman one is far from dying. A loose continuation doesnt have to constantly refer to the events of Nolan's movies. Joker and Scarecrow is in Arkham where they would probably be in a reboot anyway, a simple line can cover Ra's Al Ghul's resurrection and anyway its perfect for the character because he is always dying and resurrecting in the comics anyway. Two-Face's death can be retconned with a simple line, no-one must know the previous DA is alive and a cold-blooded killer or it would be a blow to the people of Gotham. And as for never mentioning Rachel Dawes again, he is probably going to brood over her death a lot in the third movie anyway, so we wont want to hear any references to her character in future movies anyway

As long as Nolan doesnt kill Batman or do something stupid with the villains, the Batman series could easily continue on with loose sequels to Nolan's movies and without a reboot. Sorry about the long rant, but people, especially the studios have to realise that reboots arent always the case, a lesson that should have been learned with the Spider-Man series
jazzman
jazzman - 9/30/2010, 5:10 AM
Batman does not need another reboot they can carry on with a different director.

@Ryden

u joking WB wont let it be the last Batman movie while it makes money for them all the time.
Protonite
Protonite - 9/30/2010, 5:58 AM
I think it all depends on where Nolan takes the storyline in this 3rd movie. If he ends it in an open note, WB will probably continue the franchise with a partial/complete recast, maybe leading it up to a JLA movie.

If, on the other hand, he closes the story off, i.e, Batman dies or some such, then it's inevitably back to Rebootville. Either way, I think this trilogy will be one of the best in CBM history for years to come.
