Will Ferrell Shares His Thoughts On Comic Book Movies!

The star of the animated superhero spoof, Megamind, talks about whether he thinks there are just too many comic book movies being made which will eventually result in audiences becoming bored...

The actor was asked whether the fact there are four major superhero movies - Green Lantern, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and X-Men: First Class - coming out next summer means that audiences will become bored of the genre. Here's what he had to say:

"Well, who knows? Hollywood probably will at some point wear out the audience because that's the tendency. I don't know, maybe that genre is evergreen in the sense we're all looking for a hero. It's escapist type of entertainment and hopefully that's always going to play with people."

What do you think? Are you glad that all of these characters are making their way to the big screen or do you think Hollywood are overdoing it to the extent that regular movie goers will eventually get bored? I for one am glad to see all of these adaptations (apart from the ones from Fox, lol!) and don't see even non comic book fans getting fed up when we have amazing looking movies like Thor and Green Lantern on the way! Be sure to share your thoughts about this in the usual place!

I don't think people will not get bored, because when you compare the number of movies out there vs, the super hero movies, there are probably 3% or 4% of super hero movies.
Like this year there were probably 150 big screen productions, and maybe 4 or 5 super hero movies.

but people will definitely get bored of the SAW franchise! LOL.

He's right sorta. With all you ppl complaining about everything, who knows when the day will come you'll be complaining about the whole comic book movie genre in general, because, say they aren't close to the sources at all, or theyve casted so many actors you feel the need to bitch and moan about.

It can, and will fade eventually...sadly... :(

They've been making superhero movies since the 1940's. Going back to the serial days they had The Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941), Batman (1943), The Phantom (1943), Captain America (1944), and Superman (1948).

i feel people will be more bored of FOX Studio X-Men spin-off than other comic book movies that are coming.

do these people realise comic book movies are not just superheroes. comic book movies are more then just characters with superpowers. they forget comic book movies has different genre i.e. Sci-fi, Action, Horror, Drama, etc.

- 30 Days of Night is a comic book movie and its a horror film
- A History of Violence is a graphic novel and its a thriller

i agree i think if marvel had the rights to x-men, spiderman, fantastic four, and dardevil then people would not get bored of them. but the studios do not know how to get them right, marvel does.FOX SUCKS.

Thing is; my opinion means all and my opinion is that:

Everything will continue to suck other than direct Marvel Studios/Marvel Cinematic Universe films and Nolan properties. Spider-man might get a real boost come 2012 though, that will have to wait and see.

It's not going to die out. It may slow down for a while, but it's certainly not going to die out. Think about it, they've been making ganster movies since the beginning yet The Departed and The Town are huge successes and we've seen romance stories forever yet Titanic is one of the highest grossing movies of all time and Twilight is all the rage just now. Things like that don't die out....ever.

I think as long as they keep making good movies, they will find an audience. Stuff like Catwoman and Jonnah Hex is not gonna do Hollywood any favors with the CBM! But people can differentiate between these things. They also need to start in mining more Vertigo titles..but do a better job that The Losers!

I think if there is variety in comic book movies, they could go on forever. How many horror or romance movies has there been and they keep being popular because they have variety. That means Marvel and DC has to keep making different types of comic book movies. This is going to be tricky when making movies about Hawkeye and Green Arrow or Aquaman and Namor. The general public will see them as pretty much the same character and it will be a turn off. Same for the Martian Manhunter, leave him in a Justice League movie but not in his own movie, to the general public, he is too similar to Superman. However, when it comes to making movies about the members of the Justice League and the Avengers, they couldnt be anymore different so they will have great variety.

Another thing is studios will have to recognise when
there is an end point for comic book characters before movies about them become the same thing over and over again. For franchises like Iron Man, this is a possibility meaning it really should only run for a trilogy.

In my opinion, its not the amount of comic book movies that is being created is the problem, the problem is the constant bloody reboots. A reboot should only be implemented when a franchise is beyond saving. Spider-Man 3 wasnt a good movie but they could of easily brought in this Webb guy to direct a continuation which could of continued on from Spidey 3 instead of the studio bosses looking up their extremely limited dictionaries and going straight for the word "reboot"! If the studios tried to the best of their ability to make a comic book movie that was respectful to the essence of the character(s) it is based on, they wouldnt have to constantly make reboots

Cant wait for Megamind, looks great. I would love to see Will Ferrell in a proper CBM someday though, what role in what CBM, would you guys think he would be good at?

As long as we continue to get quality movies from the likes of Marvel Studios and guys like Christopher Nolan, I don't see this genre ever dying out. If anything, we're only just at the beginning of the new wave of superhero movies and things can only keep on getting better, with these characters becoming more and more popular.

dancingmonkey: I was actually thinking about that while writing this article and cant think of a single character! He's a great actor but the only one I could sort of see him as off the top of my head would be Flatman from the Great Lakes Avengers, lol! :D

i dont think superhero movies will die out anytime soon because like Will says everyone likes a hero. however, i can see them slow down once they finish up making movies for the big Marvel and DC heroes

I personally can't take anything Will says to heart. He's responsible for ruining large chunks of my childhood (a la Bewitched, Land Of The Lost, etc.).

Superheroes have been around in popular entertainment since men could express their imaginations to each other. They only happen to be cinematically popular currently due to technology catching up to our imaginations in a relatively convincing manner. They'd have made many of these films decades ago if it could've been done convincingly and on budget. The genre just has some long overdue catching up to do before it slacks off a bit again. I don't think that'll be any time too soon though.

wont happen so long as they dont make things like smallville for the big screen... stick to the "godfathering" format that is taking place with the Nolans and Superman, and apply it to all others... everything should be fine
