Joe Johnston Reiterates That Namor Will NOT Be In Captain America!

CBM's own Ed Gross has already confirmed with the director that Namor wont be in the movie, but Johnston has once again hammered home the point in an interview with Total Film...

The Coventry Telegraph have spotted a brief interview with the director of Captain America: The First Avenger in this months issue of Total Film Magazine where he once again points out that the rumours claiming Namor the Submariner will be in the movie are nothing more than just talk! Here's what he had to say:

"That talk about Sub-Mariner is just talk."

"The story is solidly about Steve Rogers, his origins, and how he becomes Captain America."

So, no Namor and no Human Torch. While I think it's a good thing that the movie will focus on Steve Rogers (and hopefully Bucky) it's a real pity we wont get to see the team in all their glory. Here's hoping for a Band of Brothers style TV series! Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

Captain America: The First Avenger is set to be released on July 22, 2011!

ANOTHER REASON WHY MARVEL NEEDS THE RIGHTS BACK. THIS MOVIE WOULD HAVE BEEN BEYOND EPIC IF ALL THE INVADERS WERE IN IT

I love the Invaders in the comics... but they do not fit in Marvel's cinematic universe, most of them are far too outlandish.

well im going to stop Namor from appearing in Captain America with all my powers :p lol

I too would love a cameo of both. But I also realize their is only some much space to tell this story. To me Namor's appearents would neither break or make the picture, but it still would be neat!

Like Intruder said, he didn't say "Namor is not going to be in this movie"

@ intruder

as much as i would like you to be right,as his comic book states "namor the first mutant" & his been featured in the pages of "the x-men".

so i think comes down to fox being pricks not letting marvel use the characters they want.

fox has no plans of using the likes of namor, scarlett witch or quicksilver, but would still like to put a spanner in the works so marvel can't use them characters in future avenger related movies.

Marvel do own the rights, and Marvel Studios is producing this film.

c'mon guys, you can't blame everything on Fox. Namor isn't going to be in the movie. Not because Fox owns the rights, but because having an Atlantean fish man with ankle wings would confuse the general movie going audience and over shadow Steve Rogers. Do you really want another X-Men Origins?

marvel72 - 11/9/2010, 8:09 AM
@ jazzman

i thought fox owned anything x-related,if thats the case with namor then the same should be any other non mutant characters i.e deadpool & juggernaunt.

@ intruder

i remember that article as well, didn't he also say it would feature 9 costumed characters.

If he's not in, that's too bad.

However saying "The story is solidly about Steve Rogers, his origins, and how he becomes Captain America." doesn't really exclusive it.

I mean, Bucky for sure, is in there. The movie is about Cap/Steve, but Bucky is indeed in it. Shows the movie can indeed have another character in it and still be "solidly about" another character. It just means the movie isn't about Bucky.

Now, I'm leaning against Subby being in there, but until he says Namor is NOT in it in any way, there is always that option.

marvel rights back

Fox never had the right to Namor.

They made him a mutant after the deal with Fox happened. Marvel-Feige has went on record a few times saying they have the rights to Namor. Fox cannot retro-actively snatch him, or Cloak & Dagger for example.

yeah your right about the location of namor in iron man2.

i'm sold i reckon he could be in it,they don't want to give away too much.

if we knew everything it would be shit.

@deadpool72

FOX only own mutant characters who started out in the X-Men universe. plus Universal Pictures had the rights to Namor first. i believe Marvel and Universal Pictures made a deal so Marvel can use the character all they want now.

@Intruder

im going to burn that article lol

Sebastian Stan was officially cast as Bucky quite some time ago, but because we have not heard much from him is no reason to be concerned (yet).

Seriously, we haven't heard much ANYONE on this movie so you can't link that to quantity of involvement.

I'm sure we will see the Red Skull in it prominently, but I have not seen much of him either.

Hell, We have BARELY seen Cap himself and all the stuff we have seen is relatively recently.

DDD
DDD - 11/9/2010, 8:22 AM
Johnston himself said the last half of Cap America
would feature THE INVADERS. That's not rumor!
One Invader in Union Jack does not THE INVADERS make.

I think Johnston misspoke. I do believe he meant THE
HOWLING COMMANDOS, THE HOWLERS. Of course, then again,
UNION JACK was never in THE HOWLERS.

Just what the heck is the REAL facts I wonder!
Oh, well, this movie still looks great to me!

The whole marvel cinematic universe crossover thing is going to some people's head's too much. Like the guy said, the film's about Steve Rogers. Why dilute the film into a total mess by sticking a load of needless characters in it?
It's called Captain America for a reason, not Captain America and the Invaders.
jazzman
jazzman - 11/9/2010, 8:33 AM
@DDD

its the Howling Commandos that he will use for the movie with some member of the Invaders.
RyKnow
RyKnow - 11/9/2010, 8:38 AM
@ Intruder - I'm just saying that the film isn't the comics. While they'll use elements of the comics/source material, the film will focus on Steve Rogers, and have Steve Rogers as the hero, hence the title Captain America.
Iron Man featured Nick Fury, The Incredible Hulk featured Tony Stark, but neither characters had any impact on the film whatsoever because the films were about the titular characters. The same will probably happen here. As DDD said, Johnston said the commandos/invaders will feature, but my guess is they'll be little more than a cameo.
Only time will tell though mate, I'm not trying to predict the future ;)

He reiterates exactly what he said to Ed! Which I admit is a bit vague, but its enough for me to be fairly sure he won't be in it. Intruder, remember how sure you were The Riddler would be the villain in Batman, and anyone that thought different was nuts?:)

He said the exact same thing as he did the last time. He didn't say "no", so I will take this as further smoke and mirrors. If you have to be tight-lipped about things, what do you expect him to say? Why didn't he simply say "No, Namor is not going to be in the film". He can't give away everything yet, so I will not take this in the frame of reference this article is trying to make. Sure, he may not be in the film, but nothing bugs me more when words are interpreted to say one thing when that isn't what they are literally saying. "That's just talk" does not necessarily mean "no".

The story can be solidly about Steve Rogers, but we have been told the Howling Commandos and the Invaders are going to be in the movie. A little bit of a misinterpretation or contradiction again?
RyKnow
RyKnow - 11/9/2010, 8:57 AM
I'm sure that when he said "The talk about Sub-Mariner is just talk. The story is solidly about Steve Rogers, his origins, and how he becomes Captain America", he meant exactly that. He's alluding to the title "The First Avenger", which is what the film's about. Besides, how would Sub-Mariner fit into the story.
A lot of the characters people are crying out for will appear in the inevitable S.H.I.E.L.D. movie, you can count on that.

rockstar728 - 11/9/2010, 9:01 AM
makes sense to me that he's not in it. having multiple super-powered beings for an intro movie would be too confusing and take the emphasis away from cap.
cashsteele
cashsteele - 11/9/2010, 9:03 AM
Seems like he didnt say no, maybe he's referring to the rumors of what his role will be in the movie leaving it open to discussion so as to not really piss people off, if he's in it be cool but if he's not that it means more character development for Cap, I mean introducing a character with such a rich history and background by saying, "Hey I'm Namor", would hardly do the character itself any justice even though I'm not a big fan....
