Did Anne Hathaway Confirm That She's Up For A Role In The Dark Knight Rises?

Well, sort of. When asked about the rumours, she doesn't deny them and talks about competing with other actresses. Hit the jump to decide what you make of what she had to say...

Bit of an odd one this. In an interview with Deadline, it was put to the actress that she's recently been mentioned to be in a running for a role in the highly anticipated third installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise. As you can see from the following question/answer, she doesn't deny the rumour and seems to address the fact that she's competing with many other actresses (who were also revealed to be in the running when she was).

It’s going on right now as Chris Nolan gets started on a new Batman, and you’ve been mentioned as a candidate for that. Do you find yourself competing against certain actresses or any you measure yourself against?

"Of course, but that has always been the case. There is always competition...I don’t know how to answer that question, it feels too revealing, somehow."

However, I think this very much depends on how you decide to read into what Hathaway said. The fact she didn't come right out and say the rumours were untrue seems to be a good indication, but whether she actually confirms it by the rest of what was said is really up to perspective. Was she referring to the movie or competing with other actresses in general? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

The Dark Knight Rises is set to be released on July 20, 2012!

wow...in your headline you say that she "confirms that she is up for a role in The Dark Knight Rises!" Then, in your lead in, you say "Well, sort of. When asked about the rumors, she doesn't deny them..." but then, when you read the rest of your "article" she gives such an open ended statement that her answer could have to do with ANY role that she has been up for. EVER. Why isn't the "question" that she was asked in quotes Josh? You have her answer in quotes but not the question itself. Is that because you paraphrased it? You are really stretching your credibility as a "writer" by posting an article that answers it's own question without even having to actually be read or have any thought invested in it by the reader.

DCMF/ROR: Thanks guys - I had to read the whole [frick]ing interview to find that one nugget of information! I was hoping for something Lois Lane related, but I'll take what I can get. I've changed the "!" to a "?" in the title now though, as that leaves a little more ambiguity with the word "confirms", lol. :P

Superzero, he didn't paraphrase. click the link back to Deadline if your still doubtful.

incidentally I agree that since she didn't deny it its a good indication that there was some truth to the rumor.

Superzero: The question isnt in quotes because it's a question. I only ever put the answer in quotes and italics (which is exactly what should be done) as you have surely seen I do in the 1000+ articles I've written on CBM in the past. If I'd paraphrased the question, I would have said so, and not included it up in that yellow blockquote. And I've made it perfectly clear that what she says is a matter of interpretation.

For example, when he asks - Do you find yourself competing against certain actresses... - that could be perceived as him referring to the others that were also said to be up for the same role or in her career in general. Nothing here has been stated as fact, which is why I spent extra time pointing out in the article that it's up to you guys to decide what she meant. Nice attempt at taking me down. Try harder next time. :)

Hmm, I'd love to see what she can do under Nolan's direction. She'd definitely be a step-up from Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal, severely looks-wise for the latter of the two.

As for who she could possibly be up for (if the rumor is true) is anyone's guess. It could be a character already established in the comics or it could be a completely new character (à la Rachel Dawes).

No...she is not confirming anything. I seriously don't know how anyone could interpret it that way. She gives a general answer to the question of competing against other actresses for movie parts, which in no way is directly tied to Batman.

"Anne Hathaway confirms nothing" should be the headline. Misleading much? You'd even be stretching the truth with "Did Anne Hathaway confirm role in TDKR?" because she didn't confirm anything. At all. Shame on you guys. That answer could have been taken out of context for any movie out there.

Good one, Josh. Piqued everyone's interests for sure. LOL!
And nice pic of Batman with the new costume!
Who did that?

IMHO, that's a confirmation.
1. The "competing" question definitely came right after the "candidate in new Batman" statement.
2. To which she answered "Of course."
3. Then she went generalizing back with "that has always been the case. There is always competition"
4. Yet the "too revealing" statement was definitely to the fact that Nolan is very hush-hush about his movies. If it was a general answer to a general question, why "too revealing" then? She's a celebrity, for crying out loud! Practically her "whole life" is for public consumption. A competition with other actresses (in a casting or otherwise) and measuring up against certain actresses in general, in her life as an actress, is hardly revealing.

Her, me like.
But, Charlize Theron as Harley Quinn FTW!

In TDK, did anyone else notice that the name of the guy who went on TV threatening to reveal Batmans identity was MR. REESE - (MYSTERIES).
Surely The Riddler needs to be in TDKR. Batman himself says in TDK "the joker's just a mad dog, I wanna know who let him out the cage".

FutureCBMHero - 12/20/2010, 10:35 PM
carter, I hate to be rude, but where the [frick] have you been?

1. People have brought that point up a solid 12 billion times since TDK.

2. Nolan has said no Riddler.

But actually, you're quote there could be an interesting facet of the next film.....who did let the Joker out in the first place? Talia? Black Mask? Luthor? WHOA NOW!

The point of Rachel Dawes was that they'd grown up together and had a real love. Not that she was some model that everyone has a crush on.She was meant to be a D.A not a movie starlet!
If the only reason you watch a Bat movie is to perve like creepy bastards at skantily clad women, try the porn parody.Personally I couldn't give a shit if they're not supermodels as long as they nail the character.I'm sure Nolan see's it that way too. He's trying to give us something with depth, not a superficial action movie.

If she is playing someone like Sarah Essen, Vicky Vale or Harley Quinn im ok with her, but Violante Placido and Marion Cotillard should play Talia and Selina Kyle.

I don´t see her as Talia or Catwoman.
I see her as Lois Lane in the reboot of Superman!
