COMICS: Copy Of The Avengers #4 Sells For A Record Price!

With his movie set to be released in July, the classic issue that brought Captain America into the modern Marvel Universe has just sold for a record amount! Hit the jump for details...

Although he didnt create Captain America, it was Stan Lee (along with the brilliant Jack Kirby) who reintroduced the iconic character into the Marvel Universe we all know and love back in Avengers #4 in 1964. A CGC 9.6 copy of the issue last night went for $91,500 at ComicLink — a new record for this issue by a large amount. Apparently, there are only 7 copies certified in this grade and none higher.

While this price may seem a little low in comparison to the six figure sums that the likes of Amazing Fantasty #15 (the first appearence of Spider-Man) or Fantastic Four #1 attract, it's worth remembering that Captain America's comic book debut actually took place twenty years earlier than this issue during WWII. However, this is still a great price which is only going to increase in value with both Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers set to hit cinemas in the next couple of years.

Wouldn't surprise me if they used this cover as a template for The Avengers film posters - except replacing Giantman with the Hulk.

Damn! This makes me want to go through all of mine again. I have Fantastic Four #52 (first appearance of Black Panther) that I saw someone trying to sell on eBay for $4200.00 a while back.

Interesting! I'm glad to see a story about this key book being posted. Usually, it's only Amazing Fantasy #15 or FF #1 that get all the attention.

Indoraptor: the highest price paid for a comic is either Action #1 or Detective #27. Don't remember the exact numbers, but top-condition copies of both of these have sold for over a million dollars in the last year or two.

captain america 1 & marvel comics 1 are the only two comics that could even come close to action comics 1 or detective comics 27.

Damn! I better send mine in to CGC for grading! This one doesn't look much better than mine. That's a lot of dough. Too bad the CGC rapes you when they grade your books. The more the book is worth, the more they charge you to grade it. You would think they were selling it for you, not just putting a grade to it.

indoraptor12 -- the highest price paid for any comic was a copy of Action Comics #1 CGC 8.5 for $1.5 million.

The most valuable Silver Age book is a 9.6 FF #1 which changed hands in a cash/trade deal valued at around $425,000.

The best Captain America issues to have are the Steranko issues. They'll never leave my colleciton! I am a big fan of the Roger Stern/John Byrne run, too.

But then again, I used to own a Hulk 181, too.

I hate comic book grading so much. I have a bunch of the Avengers, Tales To Astonish, and Tales of Suspense early issues from the 1960's I was saving for retirement that aren't worth that much now thanks to grading.

@Tea - I have several early Avengers issues starting with #15 and my earliest Cap is #187. Unfortunately my Hermaphrodites In Love #1 pages are also stuck together ;)

Great pic. Love me some Asian hotties with big boobs!
