This morning, the news broke that the veteran actor had passed away:

Gough had a long and varied career, although he'll be best known among comic book fans for his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the earlier Batman series of films.

His later roles included Alfred Pennyworth for director Tim Burton, including Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992). He also reprised his role as Alfred in the 1994 BBC radio adaptation of Batman: Knightfall and in Joel Schumacher Batman films, Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997). Gough is one of only two actors to appear in the four Batman films (the other actor was Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon). He also briefly reprised his Alfred role in six 2001 television commercials for the OnStar automobile tracking system, informing Batman of the system's installation in the Batmobile. [Wikipedia]

His third wife and close friend, Anneke Wills, said: "As his body was deteriorating this week, he said that he wanted to hang on for St Patrick’s Day. And he did, just. In the end... there is only love." Michael Gough leaves his current wife Henrietta, his daughter Emma and sons Simon and Jasper. His grandchildren Samuel and Daisy are also actors. He was 94.

R.I.P. We shouldn't be too sad, 94 is a fine age.
He was a great Alfred imho. For some reason I still can't quite buy Michael Caine as a butler. Come to think of it, have we even seen him buttle yet? There's very little buttling going on in those first 2 movies if you ask me.

I first saw Michael Gough from the Hammer horror movies "The Horror of Dracula" (starring Christpher Lee and Peter Cushing), and "The Phantom of the Opera"and "Trog" about a discovey of living caveman. His role Alfred Pennyworth is a nod not only to his being Brittish but I believe as nod to his previous horror/monster films in the 60's. His presence in Tim Burton's Batman is a cue that the new Batman has shifted camp to gothic.

Michael Gough also has won a Tony award in 1979 and BAFTA TV award in 1957.

R.I.P. Michael Gough and thanks for the movies.

one man's tragedy is no cause to bash another great actor. He and michael caine botgh do(or did) the role justice. Instead of being sad, be glad the man had the strength to hold on this long

wow this is a shock. not becuase he passed away but because he was still alive. i could sware he died back in 97 after the new batman movie. maybe i heard some false rumor or maybe the fact that he died in the movie threw me off. either way im surprized. long life indeed!

Gough was possibly the best thing about that Batman series as a whole. He made such a fantastic Alfred and I'm glad he lived a long life. RIP.

The best thing about the 90's Batman movies along with Keaton. RIP Alfred.

Tea@ Yep - loved him in that film. And all those other horror films he was in in the '60s and '70s. I am guessing that is where Tim Burton first saw him too.

Classy actor in some gruesome films! RIP!
