Superman Heading To Chicago; TDKR Story Line Evolving Beyond Gotham?

It looks like the Superman scenes set in Smallville will be filmed in Chicago, while the same report states that the reason for Nolan not returning to the city is because Gotham will not be the focus...

Firstly, here are the excerpts from Chicago Business' report on the news that Zack Snyder's Superman: The Man of Steel is set to film the Smallville based scenes there, and possibly more.

Superman is coming to Chicago this summer, a huge boost for the city's hopes to be a moviemaking superpower. Filming of Warner Bros. Pictures' next Superman movie will take place in the Chicago area over two or three months starting in August, industry sources tell Crain's, with production centered in far west suburban Plano.

"It would be a tremendous windfall for us," says Richard Moskal, director of the Chicago Film Office. He can't confirm Warner Bros.' plans but says such a film "showcases a city well to audiences and draws the attention of other producers."

While the plot and other details of 'Superman: Man of Steel' have been kept super-secret, the first in a refreshed series would logically focus on Superman's early years in the Kansas town of Smallville, which would explain semi-rural Plano as the setting for much of the filming.

Even more interesting though, was what the site says about The Dark Knight Rises. While we already know that it's likely Christopher Nolan will not be shooting the movies Gotham set scenes in Chicago, it looks like the film might have an even more international feel than we first thought.

Filming 'The Dark Knight Rises' here is "not looking likely," Mr. Moskal says. "The story line is evolving beyond Gotham City. But from Warner Bros.' perspective, and Chris Nolan himself told me, they were thrilled with how things went here in Chicago."

Evolving beyond Gotham? The character of Batman is of course best known for his relationship with the fictional DC city, so I find it hard to imagine it not being the focus in The Dark Knight Rises. However, a few other locations (New Orleans for example) have already been rumored to be filling in as the city this time around so I doubt we have too much to worry about! Be sure to speculate and share your thoughts in the usual place!

Synder said he wants a realistic Superman. Imagine if these movies crossed over LOL.

This is what they would do is they were super smart. It make fans all over weep. Then they could great a Justice League movie and rake in billions.

Honestly [frick]ing idiots.

I don't know how much of the film is set in Smallville, but 3 months is a lot of filming.Or, maybe the Smallville scenes aren't very long, just very intricate to film.

Nunchux@ That's your opinion and you are entitled to it, though I will choose to disagree with you. Many films have different tones and styles of characters, not just comic book movies, and they end up just fine. Joss Whedon is excellent at working with ensemble casts and taking different personalities who seem at odds with each other and making them work together as a fine-tuned machine, so I think the Avengers will prove you wrong. My opinion. ;-)

That being said, everything we have been told to date is that crossing over the Batman and Superman universe to create a JLA is not going to be an option with Nolan in the current mix.

@Ranger14- i agree. i'm getting a little tired of the negativity towards Whedon (who is critically acclaimed, albeit on a smaller scale than Nolan... but not for long) and the avengers. so i'm happy to see someone who shares the opinion.

Sadly Nolan is against the idea of cross overs (from what i heard) so... no superman/batman film anytime soon guys.

I'm more of a Marvel fan and I'm rooting for DC to finally start stringing together a Justice League movie. They really need to start the crossover now , even if it's something after the credits or at the end or whatever. Make us go holy shit.

Illinois is a good setting for Smallville. I live about 3 hours from Chicago and all that's between here and there are small towns and cornfields lol. Pretty much everything outside of the Chicago suburbs is farm land.

I think it may be Egypt or something, if the League of Assasins make a return it wouldn't be to hard to imagine. Or maybe South America with Bane.

I think it will be a great idea to film the scenes of Smallville in the state of Kansas. Because, Chicago is not a big city to be filmed. Its too Enormous. I know Wichita or Kansas City will be a great spot to film the locations of Smallville, Kansas

See, they give us a British Superman, but then they put Smallville back in the good ol' US of A (Superman Returns' Smallville scenes were filmed in Australia). It all balances out!

I'm just being snarky... I wouldn't mind if Smallville looked a little less "1950s small town" and a little more current to how rural life is lived in the states. They've got the internets and *everything*, yo!
