What Is Sebastian Shaw Doing In This New International Trailer For X-Men: First Class?

Identical to the last international trailer apart from one scene, the following explosive snippet of footage featuring Kevin Bacon's Sebastian Shaw leads us to wonder what exactly his powers will be in the upcoming movie...

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

Go to the one minute mark to see Sebastian Shaw use his unique mutant ability.

What exactly is going on there?! In the comic books, Shaw is able to absorb any kinetic energy he is struck by and can surpass the strength level of said opponent in order to over power them. Here's an example:

The question is, does Shaw have a completely new set of powers in X-Men: First Class or are these simply a new and interesting take on them by Matthew Vaughn? What do you think? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

Thanks to Moin Aziz Syyed (@Makenshi1985) for the heads up!

X-Men: First Class is set to be released in the UK on June 1st and in the US on June 2nd.

Nice find JW!!!

I hate how its the same trailer with like 1 new scene every time. Drives me crazy, but I am looking forward to this more and more everyday!!! We will see how it turns out!

And I think it will be the same set of powers just portrayed in a different style

I hate how magneto only moves metal in these singer movies...where's his electrokinesis? Force fields, etc?

Pretty Lame. Its like Superman without heat vision or cold breath.

That is hilarious lol
But obviously he expanded in order to handle the explosion for a moment and then overpowers the energy exerted and his body returns to his normal state.
I suppose it's like his comic power, but on a more molecular level or something.
I'm not really knowledgeable on his character in the comics though.

Shaw absorbs energy. That's a detonator in his hand. It explodes. That's him absorbing the energy. And I guess that's (part of) the effect they came up with.

One thing he definitely is doing is not looking like Sebastian Shaw. :-( Still don't understand why they have Bacon as Shaw.

Bacon has pretty much said the powers are the same as the comic. It kind of looks like he's setting off some sort of explosion and absorbing the energy there. The extra two arms thing is confusing...if you look he has 3 heads there too. Probably just an awkward cut in the middle of an SFX shot.

More I look at it. They probably just came up with a different way to show him absorbing visually...instead of him just standing there and going 'muahaha'.

Pretty cool scene of Helmeted suit wearing Magneto blowing up soldiers in there too.

First off..Banshee doesnt come in conact with the Xavier or the X-men til later on in the comics for an emergeny. And Hank McCoy doesnt actually tranform into the Beast til later on in the comic as well...thats why I dislike this movie....its so way off from the comics.

@SuperKalEl, are you one of those people who won't tolerate any deviations from the comics? If so, you must have hated Blade, as they gave him powers he didn't have in the comics.

You must have also disliked the original X-Men, because Kitty was at the Institute before Rogue, Wolverine, Colossus and Nightcrawler. Not to mention Pyro being a student.

Come on, man. This isn't the comics. It's the movies.A different universe with a different timeline. You can't possibly believe they're going to follow how each character debuted or encountered the X-Men to the letter.

All I can say is unnecessary SFX.

Seriously, Fox, I am not seeing the film no matter how good you make the SFX look.

Hello????
His powers are exactly the same!!!!
He is absorbing the kinetic energy of the explosion. He is obviously showing someone his powers 'cause his got the detonation button and is making it explode over him on purpose.

SuperKalEl@ Umm...it IS the same universe! Unless they have decided this is no longer a prequel to the first three films (I have always believed this will end up being a reboot), but they are claiming it is a prequel which means the continuity should be there. You can't have true continuity for a prequel if you are crossing over and changing from the first three films. I have no issue with minor changes with minor characters like Kitty being in the institute prior to so and so. This one has gaping discrepancies.

Exactly @Jonet. I don't know what are guys talking about. He is doing exactly the same thing like in the comics, in this scene, absorbing that explosion.
