Producer Calls X-Men: First Class A Reinvention Not Reboot; Promo Image Of Magneto Released!

Lauren Shuler-Donner talks the reinvention of the franchise, the challenges of placing it in the 60s and its James Bond influences. PLUS: An image of Magneto in full X-Men attire glimpsed in the first shot of the cast has been released...

The upcoming issue of SFX Magazine features an interview with the producer who has overseen all of the X-Men movies, and below are a few extracts posted on their site earlier today. You'll be able to read the whole thing when #209 hits stands next week.

On The "Reinvention" Of The X-Men Franchise:

"X-Men: First Class is very, very different to its predecessors. It’s got a different style, a different tone. I believe you have to not just reboot but reinvent. So how do you do it? You make its world unique. You use its strengths. Make it of its world. Nolan’s The Dark Knight is vastly different to Favreau’s Iron Man. They’re very different movies, and that’s how you distinguish them. You stay true to your world."

On The Challenges Of Getting The Audience To Accept A Period Movie:

Unfortunately it always is. There’s a generation that went through it, and then there are generations that didn’t, and do not know that time, and we don’t ever want them to see it as a history lesson. But that’s another way to stay unique and different."

On The James Bond Feel To The Movie:

"Yes, it’s got a Connery early ’60s Bond feel to it. Michael Fassbender’s Eric Lehnsherr has definitely got a Bond element to him. And of course we tried to stay true to the look of the ’60s, the wardrobes and the hair. We took a few liberties, but mostly we’re in that world. And then we have the real events of the time to ground us."

The New York Times meanwhile have posted the following image of Michael Fassbender as Magneto in his full X-Men uniform. If this looks familiar to you, it's because we've already seen it in the first highly criticised image of the cast which was leaked online earlier this year. However, this is a much larger, clearer version and it'll be interesting to see whether one of these exists for each of the characters featured in that banner.

X-Men: First Class is set to be released in the UK on June 1st and in the US on June 2nd.

Michael Fassbender is one of the main reasons I want to see this film. He looks positively awesome as Eric. Also, inb4 LEE trashes this movie. Good find Josh.

She didn't make sense saying it's a reinvention/reboot, and then comparing Iron Man vs. Dark Knight.

Lots of trepidations in seeing this.

"Not just reboot but reinvent"...which is basically saying it is rebooting. Guess they aren't going to try to convince people it is a Prequel anymore. Like I have been saying for months now... ;-)

@Ranger14

shes bullsh!ting its a prequel why they making a movie about the history of the characters before they become Magneto and Xavier we know of.

if you going to reboot/reinvent X-Men you need to have Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Ice Man the iconic characters.

Fassbender is going to really shine in this movie, he was good in 300 and Great in Inglorious Bastards. I am excited to see how this movie turns out!

I hate that women. Regardless, there's no doubting that Fassbender will be amazing as Magneto and the movie really does look amazing so far. The trailers released a few days ago are even more impressive than the one for Captain America: The First Avenger IMO! I'm not saying that this will be better, but it definitely has a chance!

Guys, I think what she is trying to say is that X-Men: First Class needs to have a different tone than the previous X-Men films. Granted comparing Iron Man to TDK was pretty stupid, but I still think this film has potential.

i agree Fassbender will be amazing as Magneto plus from the trailer he would be a great James Bond when Daniel Craig stop been Bond.

jazzman@ I don't know how much clearer she could be. They have already screwed up the continuity enough to display that they are going a different direction with the future of the X-Men franchise. We are only seeing what....a handful of characters from the prior films? Leaving out some of the most important First Class members who were part of the prior films? They are starting over again and will now use this film to do so. The Prequel talk was all to keep the fanboys at bay. Throw in a scene of Magneto and Xavier from the prior films and call it a Prequel. She is the producer of the films. I would think she is going to be pretty cautious and specific about what she is saying. We can only take it for what is said and that is that they are rebooting...reinventing the franchise.

I see it as nothing but a cop-out to attempt to continue the franchise after what X-3 was. It's easier to call something a prequel and buy some time before redoing things and starting all over again.

Why is lauren schuler-donner talking about reboots and reinventing by comparing Iron Man and The Dark Knight, I didn't know one was a reboot of the other!
I thought this was supposed to be a prequel, if not then why are they continuing the previous timeline with the Wolverine and possibly a sequel trilogy to the original X-Men movies?
This lady is a complete tool, she knows nothing about Comic Books, so why is she in charge of all the Marvel CBM's not developed by Marvel Studios?! This is the same woman who approved Deadpool to appear in X-Men Origins Wolverine with his mouth welded shut and to have swords come out of his arms and laser eyes, then said of a Deadpool reboot "Of course Deadpool needs to talk", while they had set that up in Wolverine after credits by slicing his mouth open! Basically, that whole meeting went "He needs a mouth... nah, the merc with a mouth doesnt need a mouth... lets give him a mouth at the end... lets reboot it because he didnt have a mouth, and give him a mouth and just agree with the fans like it was our intention all along!"

This is a prequel, and Lauren Schuler-Donner should be fired.

I'm a fan of these X-Men movies because the majority of the casting has been fantastic, but this is beyond a joke now. I'll watch this because Fassbender will own as Magneto, and Matthew Vaughn is a brilliant director, so maybe theres a hope that this will be a good film despite this idiot's involvement.

If you get the chance, please check out my X-Men Origins Magneto fan fic!

I don't know why people aren't following her comment on Iron Man and The Dark Knight. She is saying that though they are both comic book worlds, they are very unique and differing worlds/universes. She is saying that the worlds/universe between the first 3 X-Men and First Class is going to be just as unique and different. That much I do get. I also get the fact that they are reinventing the franchise from this point moving forward. Seems like some would rather go through the denial stage first. :-P
jazzman
jazzman - 4/29/2011, 12:14 PM
@Ranger14

she dont know sh!t its a prequel even Bryan Singer is the producer and he said its a prequel and Matthew Vaughn said its a prequel. she just lying to cover her weak a$$ and riding on Nolan success of his Batman reboot. X-Men First Class cant be a reboot when they said its still linked to the previous movies.

Lauren Schuler-Donner has ruined the X-Men franchise more than anyone!!! She has produced all the X-Men movies and didn't make sure the continuity worked. In fact when X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out she said they were going to do a Deedpool spin-off but not have anything to do with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Why the F&%k didn't she step in and make sure that Deadpool was portrayed correctly the first time.

Lauren Schuler-Donner sucks!!!
fullmetal
fullmetal - 4/29/2011, 12:20 PM
agree jazzman, this is a prequel, and if it is in fact a reboot...then that just shows how stupid they are for not including the original first class!! if its a reboot then what was their obligation in not including cyclops and jean? the whole reason why they didn't include them is because they would be too young or not even born in the 1960's!! reinvention my ass...
fullmetal
fullmetal - 4/29/2011, 12:22 PM
jazzman, star trek a prequel/sequel because Leanoard Nimoy, the original spock is in it from the original films..that was what made it so good..to some people
JackBauer
JackBauer - 4/29/2011, 12:25 PM
@jazzman - Exactly! Singer and Vaughn both said it's a prequel. There may be a few inconsistencies, but it's definitely a prequel. If it was a "reinvention" then why would they be following the previous/future storylines as close as they are? Why not just reboot or "reinvent" with the actual first class?
jazzman
jazzman - 4/29/2011, 12:27 PM
@fullmetal

yeah Star Trek prequel/sequel cause of Leonard Nimoy Spock time travel back in time.

Lauren Shuler-Donner should not be talking at all about this movie she ruin everything great about X-Men. Matthew Vaughn is the only one whos trying to save the X-Men universe as the best he can.

@JackBauer

thank u, shes a fool she should never talk about the X-Men movies

When she started comparing Nolan and Favreau, I understood that she actually knows nothing about filmmaking. Why the hell would anyone making a cbm need to watch how the others did theirs unless one doesn't have a clue what to start with one's own. CBMs are a genre that's defining itself, meaning there's still much time and space to be inovative and to experiment in different directions. If they don't even have that ambition, I can tell the movie won't be good just because they didn't spend 2 [frick]ing days thinking about it.

I think Singer, Donner and Vaughn are sitting on the fence and have been for long time. Whether it's a prequel or reboot will depend upon the films success...or not.
