In the July issue of Total Film, it has seemingly been revealed that the director of Casino Royale, Edge of Darkness and most recently, Green Lantern, will in fact NOT be returning for any future installments of Warner Bros. and DC Entertainments latest superhero franchise. Here is an excerpt from their article, while plenty more can be found in the magazine!

Inevitably, chat turns to the possibility of follow-ups. Campbell admits it will be nice to have all the backstory and complicated rules of the character already taken care of. "This film has become the instruction manual if they do any further ones. It's what we call pipe laying," he says. Not that he has plans to return for a sequel - like Bond, he loves 'em and leaves 'em."

With an all star cast which includes Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, Blake Lively as Carol Ferris and Mark Strong as Sinestro, director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern is set to be released in 3D on June 17, later this year!

so basically if they have future sequel and they turn bad they will call him back again to REBOOT Green Lantern just like he did for James Bond :P.

If he don't it will be a shame but there's a lot of other great directors WB can cast to follow up this very possible amazing movie. Could Zack Snyder take the spot, probably? But look at Nolan, he was very ambiguous about a third Batman installment but he made one anyway. WB does have a lot of money to change your mind if the first installment(s) are hits. And I have no doubt that Green Lantern will be one of intergalactic proportions! Anyways, thanks for the first one Martin Campbell!

That sucks. Every director has there own style. If a sequel happens it will be different.

rightfully so...i can only imagine the stress dude is having with getting these EFX house to finalize the shots and editing, looking at the final cut ALL WITHOUT having to hear the bitching of fanboys and the studio on his neck about the trailer and pics/promotion.

IF he does come back (im sure Warners isnt stupid enough to just sign him for one film) he'll have things more tight

Corpse and TXG puts it perfectly. He has no doubt started something incredible in the comicbookmovie genre, a total new kind of superheromovie franchise that will shape the next to come.

HE ALWAYS DOES THIS...

He makes an awesome movie then bails on the sequels which turn out being NOT as good without him.

I think the tone changes from director to director. I hated that he left the Bond franchise. But I'm sure this is more him focusing on the now. The movie isn't even out yet!

What? That f--kin sucks! He's not gonna wait and see how the movie will do and shut all the haters up? Meaning the movie may not get a sequel or the next film will be directed by some hack. Why can't Warner Bros watch out for DC for anything?

that sucks, but I'm sure DC Entertainment will not allow a director to take over who won't do the character and the franchise justice. @CaptainStraps you should not be making judgements before seeing the movie, i can't wait to watch you eat your words when this movie comes out... o wait most likely we won't see you comment ever again.

normally this would worry me as a strange sign, but considering he did the same with Bond I wouldn't take it something deeper.

It's not like he quit, he only signed up for one, to launch the franchise, that's seems to be his usual M.O.

That sucks. Now the continuity of the film is going to feel weird because it will be a different style. Way to f[rick] DC up their a$$e$ Campbell. -_-

I hope he changes his mind.

Just looking at his resume of films and it seems he doesn't like doing movies back to back. It like 8 years for a Zorro sequel and like 13 years for him to do another Bond film. I know Warner does want to take no longer than 3 years for a sequel and this comes as no surprise as why he will not return for a sequel if Warner wants it in like 2 or 3 years.
StuckInPanels
StuckInPanels - 5/16/2011, 1:25 PM
well thats not surprising in the least. If the first one does decent and can break bank then we might see someone who will make it more competent cuz so far I want to like it but for the most part the only I want to see is Strong as Sinestro

So he is good at "laying Pipe" and he "loves them and leaves them"... Sounds a lot like me!

I hope this movie is great and they still do a sequel...

ironpool007 - 5/16/2011, 2:04 PM
That his MO. He did the same thing with Bond. He did Goldeneye and then said he was done. He only came back for Casino Royale because it felt closer to Ian Flemings book. and then he left again after that. So all you idiots saying he's leaving because he thinks Green Lantern will be shit should shut up. The guy introduced 2 great versions of Bond, and he wont let us down with Green Lantern.
