Terry Gilliam Describes Andrew Garfield's Unique Approach To Portraying Spider-Man!

Sharing his thoughts on Andrew Garfield being chosen to play Spider-Man, the director of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, reveals that the actor is imagining he has eight legs when physically portraying the hero...

Talking to Vulture recently, Terry Gilliam (who worked with Andrew Garfield on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus before he found further fame with The Social Network and Never Let Me Go) shared his thoughts on the British actor playing Spider-Man, letting slip one very interesting piece of information about how Garfield is approaching the role physically. Here are a couple of excerpts from the article, but you can click on the link below to read more about what he thought of Andrew Garfield and the critical and commercial failure of movies like Green Lantern.

On Andrew Garfield's Physical Portrayal Of Spider-Man:

And I think Andrew is going to make a good Spidey. It’s really good, because he’s approaching it physically. I was just talking to him, and he talked about this movement, imagining that you have these other legs — eight legs, so four more legs. There’s this delay. I don’t know if he’s still going to do it, but it’s fantastic.

On What He Thinks About The Current Wave Of Comic Book Movies:

What’s so funny is because of growing up with comics, and always wanting to do that kind of movie, I have no interest in them at all now. That’s what I wanted to do, and now everyone else is doing them, so I don’t do them. I don’t even go now. I see the trailers, and I think, I’ve seen that trailer for about 20 years now! The same shots, the same dilemma — what are we doing here? Who’s going to make the leap that makes it different? And strangely, the ones that do are animated films. I saw Rango on the way over here, and it was wonderful. It was really funny! I think what’s happened is, they all kind of do the same thing. And aren’t they running out of good comic-book characters? When they run out of Marvel characters, will they be hitting up Neil Gaiman’s characters? Or will comic books be burned out by then, as films? I think Chris Nolan gets comic books. His Batman stuff is really good.

With an all star cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to be released in 3D on July 3, 2012!

Dr. Parnassus was the only film I've seen Garfield in so far. While I thought the movie sucked, Garfield did an awesome job with what he was given. Looks like he'll do a great job as Spider-Man.

Only wanted to see Parnassus because Tom Waits was in it. It's pretty bad, huh?

I think if you're going to judge on a trailer and not the actual film then I don't think you're qualified to judge at all.

Love Gilliam, but that line showed a degree of snobbery I thought he was above.

@Hockeypants: Depends on whether you love Gilliam's 'quirkiness' or not. I loved Imaginarium, but I can see why others wouldn't. Waits is excellent in it btw.

He'll be a good Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Keith, it's not snobbery, he just thinks, and I agree with that, that you don't need to watch every shit they serve you. And CBM can be shit very much, very often

@PaulRom Andrew Garfield was in an episode of Doctor titled Daleks in Manhattan. I think that was the second series of the newer Doctor Who because he had Martha Jones with him.

There is no way this can be nearly as good as the original one. I am really not looking forward to this. I guess I have to see footage before I can judge. I wasn't looking forward to First Class but now it is my favorite movie of this year. This Spider-Man movie just isn't interesting to me.

Dr. Parnaseus sucked because his lead actor died halfway through production and was still expected to finish with what he had. very tough terms.

Tin - except that's not what he said. He said they all seemed the same just from seeing the trailers. The trailers made Watchmen look like an X-Men movie...

Point being, to judge the quality or even content of these films from trailers is betraying the kind of snobbery I wouldn't expect from someone like him.

If he'd said he's watched all the latest batch and still felt the same, then no argument - he'd be entitled to that opinion, regardless of whether I disagreed or not, but apart from Green Lantern, most recent CBMs have been slightly 'different' than following the same old formulae these movies once did.

Kick-Ass is very different to Thor is very different to X-Men First Class is very different to Scott Pilgrim is very different to Hellboy is very different to Defendor is very different to Captain America and so on and so on.

(All good movies too did you notice - arguably - the good are outweighing the bad in the last couple of years - Jonah Hex notwithstanding)

Contrary to what Gilliam infers I don't think there's ever been a better time to make these kinds of movies for a creative director. Main reason being there's actually a market for them.

Sure the Marvel/DC characters will have to remain recognisably them, but slowly Hollywood is coming around to the idea that having a focused creative vision for these things is actually more profitable than when they just throw tights, a bunch of cliched tropes and a paint-by-numbers story together and think they have a super-hero movie (looking at you GL again).

I think he's just making excuses for growing older and just not finding men-in-tights as exciting as he used to (oo-err). Or, god forbid, maybe he's just losing his imagination... :o

@Intruder: Emma Stone is no weak link. Have you seen her movies (especially Paper Man and Easy A)? She's a very good actress.

I have high hopes for the film, but the suit does suck though, even if you do post the ONE picture that sucks the least. Stripey legs and Nikes not shown in photo. Nuff said.

Good actor but his physique and his costume are both rubbish!

Toby had the physique to look good in the suit and that's one of the main reasons he was casted.

I'll wait for it to come out on netflix. and how long have they been filming this abortion anyway??? Seems like it's been in production for years.

Rebooting a perfectly good franchise after just 9 years and while the actors are still in their prime = FAIL!

The costume rocks. It has a Ben Reily feel to it. Garfield is going to rule in this movie. So much better than Maguire crying about ulgy bitch ass Mary Jane (Dunst).
niknik
niknik - 7/1/2011, 4:19 PM
I agree that Raimi had lost his path with his ideas for #4, but the actors were still in their prime and still good for a couple more films at the least. Maguire is still in good form and easily capable of portraying Peter Parker for some time. Face it, it's is far too soon to be rebooting. Anyone over the age of 5 is going to identify Toby in that role and wonder what the hell happened. You just don't reboot when everyone is still in their movie making prime for the roles they are now overwhelmingly identified with.

Even my 12 year old says she has no interest in it whatsoever if it is going to have a completely different cast. I know I don't. Gotta imagine there are quite a few others who are feeling the same way.

And Spider-Man 3 was not all that bad. Certainly not the horrid turkey that some fanboys want to claim it was. It had it's flaws but still stands above at least a dozen worse CBM's I can think of right off the top of my head. It was ok and that's good enough for a franchise that successful to warrant another try to improve upon it. Raimi was the problem there. His ideas kept going downhill from there. Make Spiderman 4 about the Lizard and Kraven and it instantly begins to look like a winner.

whoever designed that suit should be shot

people who like that suit should have there eyes gouged out

I think three films is enough for one actor when it comes to cbms. I'll go further and say 3 films or 10 years tops. After that they either start looking too old or we get burnt out on them. Furthermore, whenever a cbm bombs it's either time for a long hiatus or total reboot. I'm not sold on Garfield yet, but I do like the costume change.

um last time i checked peter parker isn't ben riely so another dumb attempt at defending this suit

@ thewolfx I think moon said it had a "Reilly" (not riely...lol) feel to it, not that he thought it was Ben Reilly. Way to be a dick to someone online. It's easy to be rude when you're anonymous I guess. Kid.

Imagining he has 8 legs? Wtf does that even mean?

Anyway, it does sound like some sour grapes from Gilliam, who has not exactly been doing much lately. Sounds like he could never land a CBM so now he says they are lame and everyone is doing them.
Brazil was a great film, too bad it was 100 years ago.
