While a casting sheet recently hinted that the actor had joined the cast of Man of Steel, Variety's Jeff Sneider has now confirmed that he will portray "General Swanwick" in the highly anticipated movie current set for release in the Winter of 2012. While this isn't a character from the comic books (not as far as I know anyway) it does further indicate that the military will have a sizeable presence in the movie, as previous reports and rumors have already indicated. Here is an excerpt from their report.

Veteran character actor Harry Lennix is the latest to enlist in Zack Snyder’s Superman pic "Man of Steel," Variety's Jeff Sneider exclusively reports. Lennix has closed a deal to play a high-ranking military officer named General Swanwick in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ tentpole, set for December 2012.

Starring Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent and Michael Shannon as General Zod, Superman: The Man of Steel is expected to be released sometime during the Winter of 2012!

well he's a good actor but IMO it would have been cool seeing him as Ron Troupe I understand he's older than Troupe is in the comics but it would have been nice to see other supporting characters from the Daily Planet like Lombard and Grant but oh well fingers crossed this turns out well. And sounds like the military is going to play a big role does that mean that rumour from a while back about Superman going up against the military is true, I don't remember zod being mentioned in that rumoured plot so who knows

@Jazzman and remember there isn't character called General Swankick. Does it look like they care what happens in the comics no, there cool with making up characters, so I don't see a problem with doing some thing a little different with a existing character, I see no problem with Ron Troupe being older, guy could be mentor type figure to clark kent but what ever dude I just want to see the Daily Planet crew expanded a bit more

well i rather Ron Troupe been played by a young guy maybe Anthony Mackie. but the Daily Planet crew needs to be in this movie to expand the Superman universe.

This film just gets more and more interesting. The military vs. Zod and Superman?? There has to be another villain in here somewhere. Many people were mentioning Metallo who was part of the military. It would make sense and would make the movie much more interesting.

I agree Julez13 but you dont want to cram too much into the first movie...otherwise you end up with people cmplaining about MOS pulling a SPIDERMAN 3. though for the record i enjoyed all the spidey flicks.

If they were to include brainiac in towards the end of the movie as a sneak peak for the next film...id be happy.

@nailbiter and banekill- I agree...who the [frick] is that character???

@JULEZ- Agreed, this film is lookin more and more militaristic by the day.

@naterator- Yeah, just at least a hint of brainiac at the end is sufficient. IF this film were to just be the first of a possible trilogy. For a one-off film I'm hoping they find a way to introduce Brainiac. It isn't fair they keep giving that character the shaft every single time a new Superman film comes out.

@Hellsing and jazzman- I agree with you both. We need the daily planet crew in this flick. Perry, Jimmy heck even Cat Grant. I'm surprised Dan Turpin won't be in this film. He would have been a great addition to the movie for the Metropolis PD. Lex Luthor...I wish was in the film but obviously he won't be. I guess they really are taking Superman away from the world we once knew in the comics and they'd rather make up characters who never existed in the comics rather than using pre-existing/already-established characters. Typical of Nolan. But sad for the really hard-core fans who grew up with those characters. I'm still really excited for the film and it's still my #1 CBM. But my hopes for an updated Daily Planet crew and a chance to see the REAL, TRUE Lex Luthor from the comics, are dead now.

Greetings.I am headlopper.I shall join your threads now.
Any Superman movie which doesn't include Supergirl to add an element of familial humanity to the story will result in a 1 dimensional stereotypical beatdown. Boring.Superman is too powerful for a single threat per movie. He needs multiple problems to deal with simultaneously...like us.

@Banekill- Nice catch actually. The likeness is incredible.

I wasn't big on Voyager. I loved TOS, TNG and the more recent 'Enterprises' prequel series.

Tim Russ was good as a Vulcan though ;D
